Apparently zombies are funny. Who knew?
By Kyle Covino
I'm tired of zombies. Ok, that's not fair, I'm tired of the modern day interpretation of zombies. It's getting old with it being an infection turning people into the "undead." Ok, great, we can get some allegory to modern day life and all, that's swell. What happened to the classic zombie? The ones who died and have risen from the grave? That's the kind of story I want to read.
Turns out I've found it here.
This is the story of a zombie, but not any zombie; Albert Einstein the zombie. No infections or anything, just an honest to goodness back from the dead zombie Einstein. Oh thank goodness! This is not, however, a horror story and I'm ok with that. In fact, the book defies your expectations from the beginning. This is a comedy and it's the story of Riz and Micheal and how a zombified Einstein comes back to life to search for the missing pieces of his brain. And it's based on true events. For real. Apparently Einstein's brain was saved after his death. In fact, that's one of the most interesting parts of the story that has me wanting to research more about Einstein and what happened after he died.
But this is a funny, off the wall story that, in it's barest form, is about a cross country road trip. A road trip to restore the brains of their friend, but a road trip nonetheless. And the trio does wind up in many a zany situation. I can't even mention my favorite one because it starts to spoil the story.
I love the interactions between the three main characters; they're lively and unique and just plain interesting to read. Einstein especially is a precocious little scamp. His personality changes quite well as he recovers more of his brain. I never once thought "Oh yeah, sure that's how he'd react." It was always a pleasure to see how he would change.
The only time the story seems to suffer is during the driving scenes between destinations. They're fairly interesting, but they seem to repeat the same "I'll drive x hours and you drive x hours" thing a couple of times. But once they get where they're going everything is fine again.
Overall, I loved this story. It kept me laughing and as a result it kept me reading. It's not terribly long, but it told the story it needed to tell and kept it as long as it needed to be. At least the incredibly awesome, and absurd, ending teases more to come. I'm looking forward to it.

Forget everything you thought you knew about zombies
By Idiot Proof
Albert: A Gray Matter has an incredibly inventive plot and captivating style. In a totally new twist on zombie horror tales, a woman awakes one morning to find the undead corpse of Albert Einstein wandering around her living room, wearing her pink bathroom. Enlisting the help of her MIT undergraduate brother, the trio embarks on a transcontinental road trip to recover the missing parts of Albert's brain. As preposterous as the circumstance is, the characters come to life very believably. It was so entertaining that I read it in two sittings.

Very smart and a good read
By Deborah
A creative plot and lots of fun, can't wait for the sequel. "Albert" is a combination of zombie fiction and buddy road-trip story. The novel is well-written and based on (some) true facts about the fate of Albert Einstein's brain tissue after his death. The heroine, Riz, is feisty and funky, but most lovable character is Einstein himself. This is M.E.'s first published novel, and I hope there will be many more.
