Great Gift for Grandpa
By GB
Sometimes it's hard to know what to give an elderly relative because they have everything they need. This book was the answer for my 88-year-old retired farmer relative at Christmas. He looked at it all afternoon, laughing, pointing things out that he wanted the rest of us to see in the pictures, and talking about things the book reminded him to tell us. It made for a delightful Christmas Day when we learned some things about our family that we hadn't known before. He said he looks forward to reading the whole book in the coming week. I'm glad the author went to the effort to put the book together.

Midwestern Memories at the Very Best
By Betty Taylor
Readers will be delighted to learn that Jean Tennant has released the fourth in the series of anthologies about growing up in rural Midwest. "Make Hay While the Sun Shines" appropriately begins with four stories related to the title--stories that deal with putting up loose hay and the advent of hay balers. As in the other books, farm animals add humor and adventure. You will meet the traveling cat with a crooked tale, several horses including one that accidentally showed up with a truck load of cattle, a goat on the roof, the dog with a swarm of bees, a hen-killing skunk, and a lovable calf that turned into bothersome young bull.

You will be introduced to the families who faced hard times--a remarkable woman who raised her children well after her alcoholic husband deserted the family, and an equally remarkable woman who managed the family farm and raised eight children after her husband's early death. Stories contain fond recollections of families working together in projects such hanging wallpaper, washdays, and the interesting family enterprise of raising and processing sorghum.

Readers will be informed as well as amused by the story of a party-line switchboard operator, struggles with Midwestern winters, and a dance hall in the middle of Iowa cornfields. The book ends with a tribute to the spot once believed to be the highest point in Iowa, the Ocheyedan Mound.

As with the other anthologies, this one is enhanced by vintage black and white photos as well as the pen and ink artistry of LaVonne Hansen. You will be sure to enjoy the read---and will want to buy several for gifts.

fOURTH BOOK IN THE SERIES OF LIVES OF THE MIDWEST
By josephine briggs
This book is the fourth in Growing Up Midwestern and is every bit as good, interesting and entertaining as the first three. I like these books about people's life experiences. The book contains thirty four slices of life about people's walk through life. All essays are short, two to six pages each.

There are pretty drawings plus black and white photos probably taken with old Kodaks throughout the book. The first five essays are as the book's name about making hay, mowing and raking, driving tractors, driving horses. The next group of essays are about animals, a wandering cat who just couldn't stay put, several horse stories, one horse was so mean she kept trying to throw her young owner, but later saved the girl's life. A young boy, who raised a pretty little calf, but then the calf grew large and mean and attacked his owner. This boy was happy to be rid of his former pet. A writers tells of the antics of her goats and how she enjoyed them.

There is a couple who began dancing in their forties. And what fun they had competing. There are essays about school, learning to drive, college students from other states braving the long, cold Iowa winters, how wonderful it was to get a present of candy. There are essays concerning the hard work of keeping house which took up so much time. There was a family group who felt painted walls would never do. Wallpaper was the only way to go. Two essays deal with hard working mothers who worked hard to keep body and soul together. One mother was left a widow with eight children. Another mother lost her husband to alcohol abuse. He walked out on her. But all of these sensible, down to earth midwesterners worked hard. One writer tells of her younger brother who became a doctor. Writers tell of different jobs, what happened in school, one young girl told tall tales and got into a lot of trouble. The book ends about what is the highest point in Iowa? What fun people had climbing, sledding, having Easter Services at the high point. There is talk of old pioneers, earlier settlers and more.

The book contains only 161 pages but tells so much of the lives of midwesterners,a great section of a great country.
