About the Author
Shantoinette Richardson but known as Shan is an up and coming Urban Fiction writer. A Louisiana native but raised in Dallas, Texas. Writing started off to Shan as just something to do to suppress the pain and hurt she felt growing up as a child to a mother that was addicted to crack and a father who seemed to move on with his life with a new family. At just 15 years old Shan gave birth to her first child; a baby boy. Being a teen mom didn't stop Shan from achieving her goals. She graduated high school early at only 16 years old and immediately enrolled into college. While taking care of a baby while still a baby herself and furthering her education Shan always found time to write. The more she wrote and older she became the more passionate she became about her work. She then realized she had a natural born gift and that one day the world will enjoy her craft. She is currently working on her second novel Rozalyn 2: Vengeance of the Heart, a short story titled The Crew, and a hood tale entitled Reigning Starr. Her first novel Rozalyn is available for purchase through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Now at 26 years old Shan feels like she has a lot left to accomplish. With goals of creating screen plays and even movie scripts she believes that there are no limits to what she can obtain in life. She dreams of filling up bookshelves with novels that people will go on to talk about for years and years. She holds and Associates of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies, and currently works as a Client Benefit Specialist. Shan is the single mother of 3 and will stop at nothing to see they have a life that she only dreamed of.

Just ok

WOW! I actually enjoyed this story more than i thought i would. Ive had this book in my kindle for over 2 years ( as well as book 1) and im just now reading them both. The best parts of the story were the twists; the rest of the story was garbage. There was too much violence and domestic abuse but the good parts outweighed the bad parts. I have part 3, so im about start reading it.

If you like horror with a dash of suspense then you should read the DEAD MAN series. They are not only fun but addictive [...] All of the books in the series are great and THE BLOOD MESA is no exception. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 5! -- Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine

This is why I hate the desert--and ritual sacrfice.

Now we're into the fifth leg of Matt Cahill's cross-country pursuit of Mr. Dark, this time with James Reasoner at the helm. After the four preceding installments; Face of Evil, Ring of Knives, Hell in Heaven, and The Dead Woman; the bar had been set fairly high for Reasoner in terms of gritty action and horror. So, how did this novella fare?

This time around, Matt is trudging through the remorseless heat on the New Mexico on his way, drawn as if by a divine force--or unholy one for that matter--toward a mesa in the middle of the desert. On his way, he meets up with a couple of archeologists driving to the same place to join the rest of their excavation team. Turns out there's an ancient settlement on top of the mesa believed to have been inhabited, and inexplicably abandoned, by the Anasazi. It's called the Blood Mesa, and with that, Matt gets a grimmer idea of why he's heading for that spot. And when he sees that one of the archeologists bears the same decay and putrescence that all subjects of Mr. Dark carry, a mark only he can detect, he realizes there is trouble to follow.

If you ever read Scott Smith's The Ruins, or watched the film adaptation as I did, then you might be familiar with the idea of a supernatural force inflicting itself on a group of isolated students on an ancient archeological site. There was a lot of drawn out suspense with that film, as I recall, gradually building the tension until they finally decided to make a break for it. Reasoner doesn't mince around with any of that and goes straight for the jugular, ramping up the danger almost immediately, plunging Matt, the professors, and students, in a blood-soaked rampage that echoes the kind of tragedy that may have befallen the Anasazi. While you aren't too worried about Matt making it out alive, he's got several freaked out college types about to be plunged into his world--and not all of them are making it out alive.

Where I thought the fourth installment, The Dead Woman, needed to be read after the other preceding books, I thought The Blood Mesa worked relatively well as a stand alone. You wouldn't get the whole picture about why Matt can see Mr. Dark's influence on people, but there's just enough groundwork covered I think to help an uninitiated reader get the gist and enjoy the ride. I dare say Reasoner also offers up the most gruesome iteration in The Dead Man so far, as some of the deaths in this one are nothing less than brutal.

I don't think The Blood Mesa does a lot to propel the overriding story of The Dead Man, but there are a couple of allusions to Mr. Dark's past and what is at stake. I really got a kick out of this one and I think it holds up very well with the rest of the series. I suppose now I gotta look up some more of Reasoner's work for down the line. This novella includes an excerpt from his novel, Under Outlaw Flags, which is now available on the Kindle Store, so maybe I'll put that on my shopping list.

This book falls short of performance excellence

The book took 1.5 hours to read and contained little valuable content. One could receive the same by visiting the Baldrige website. I had high expectations based on the title and was sorely let down with the lack of content. The most valuable content was the last 30 or so pages which provided models previous winners have used in each of the 7 criteria.

If you are looking for an executive's guide to performance excellence, I suggest you look elsewhere. The content is insufficient to provide substantial guidance.

I read three books: The Coupon Mom's Guide to Cutting Your Grocery Bills in Half: The Strategic Shopping Method Proven to Slash Food and Drugstore Costs, Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey, & Shop Smart, Save More: Learn The Grocery Game and Save Hundreds of Dollars a Month. Each book was very different, so I thought I'd share my opinions- I hope they can help you!
Let me first say what each book had in common: they all promoted their own coupon websites and they all taught about how to get coupons, organize them and shop with them to save on your grocery bill. Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey as you might infer by its title, takes a sassy approach to couponing which, for me was totally refreshing. I flew through these 246 pages & laughed out loud along the way! This book is very visually appealing, with hilarious cartoons, including my favorite "You might be a Krazy Coupon Lady if. . . your idea of date night is casing the neighborhood dumpsters and recycling centers." The book effectively motivated me to print some coupons and try it out first hand, and I saved 71% on my first trip!
This book did the best job of explaining how to checkout with coupons. If you've never done it, you don't know how stressful it can be! Other favorite chapters included "Anatomy of a coupon", "building a stockpile to `beat the joneses!'", and learning the different kinds of coupons to indulge your "coupon fetish". The book stays focused through Chapter 12 of 15, the last few chapters talk about how to increase your income and get of debt, particularly for stay at home moms. Some good info mixed with some stating the obvious that I could have done without.

The Best reason to buy this book: It has clear focus and doesn't have too much fluff. The focus remains on saving with coupons and getting items for over 70% off or free! Plus it has great humor and is an easy read.

The best reason to pass on this book: If you're looking for lengthy info on organic deals or how to cook, or how to entertain, this book doesn't talk much about it. And this book costs more than the other two.

Coupons Create Crazy, Creative Ways to Save Big

"Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey" is everything you ever needed to know about using coupons to save big. I have to admit upfront I was skeptical at first that coupons could provide the kinds of savings the authors promise, but as I read through the secrets in this book, I was completely won over. These ladies know what they are doing with coupons--it's completely ethical, really not that "krazy" at all except when it comes to the gigantic savings, and some of the shrewdest business advice imaginable.

I'm not going to give away all the secrets here. I'll just say that these really aren't "secrets" and the Krazy Coupon Ladies are not selling anything other than this book--there are no gimmicks, no additional purchases necessary, no expensive special kits to buy, and no overpriced seminars to attend. Everything you need to know is in this book. And it's more than just advice on how to use coupons to save a couple of dollars on peanut butter, mayonnaise, or ketchup--it's practical financial advice on how to protect your wallet, how to stockpile for emergencies, how to prepare for your future, how to provide you with lasting financial security in times of adversity, and also how to have some extra money for fun--to take vacations or whatever you want to do with it. Coupons are vital for such times as when the economy is bad, or as the Krazy Coupon Ladies explain, when gas prices are high:
The price of oil directly affects the price of groceries. The more it costs to transport groceries, the more you'll have to pay to get them. The shipping and oil industries are often unpredictable, so it's comforting to have a stockpile. If truckers go on strike, if gasoline prices quadruple, you can insulate yourself from the effects by having a stockpile. It's nice to think that if gas prices jumped to $15 per gallon tomorrow, I wouldn't have to drive to the store twice a week for overpriced cereal. I could just walk out to my garage and congratulate myself for stocking up when boxes of cereal were $0.50 each.

What I didn't expect from this book was to find out that Coupons Are Fascinating!--really! I had no idea about the history of the coupon from its origins in the late 1800s to its Internet printable versions and the fraudulent scams they have engendered. Did you know there are coupon clearinghouses operated by prisoners? Did you know what all those numbers and symbols on a barcode mean? You will learn all this and more in "Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey."

And what about that title? It's funny. It describes how shoppers will have to wait a little longer while you use all those coupons, but so what? You'll be saving tons of money. The authors' many stories about their shopping and couponing adventures are equally priceless for their humor. And throughout are numerous wonderful cartoons depicting Krazy Coupon Ladies doing what they do best--savings tons of money.

Every step from finding great coupons, to how to use them to double and triple your savings, and what to do when checkout cashiers and store managers argue with you--how to educate them actually since you'll know far more than any store manager about coupons--is all provided here. And to top it all off, a lot of additional and completely free information is available on the Krazy Coupon Ladies' website.

This book may be the best financial investment you will ever make. You can easily earn back one hundred times the price of this book within one year--and if you follow all the advice in "Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey," you may even earn back five hundred times the price. So get ready to save, and even make money.

Preaching to the Choir

I've just recently started doing some hardcore couponing...I started about four months ago, and I picked up this book hoping it would be full of useful information I hadn't thought of myself. I have to say, I was pretty disappointed.

The book itself is very easy to read. The authors have a very light-hearted, fun writing style. However, I felt like the book was geared towards people who'd never used coupons before. Over and over again throughout the book, I felt like the authors were trying to convince me to jump on the couponing bandwagon. This was frustrating to me, because given that I spent over $15 on a book about couponing, I don't really need the authors to convince me that using coupons is a good idea.

I could have lived with "preaching to the choir" sort of feeling if their had been more useful information in the book, but honestly, I didn't learn that much. Most of the information provided was stuff I had figured out all on my own just by using common sense. I don't really need a book to tell me that some products are still over priced even with a coupon or that you save more money if you use a coupon on something that is already on sale.

There is some information in the book that isn't purely common sense stuff, so I did pick up a couple of new tricks. That's why I gave it an average rating of three stars rather than a lower rating. However, my gut reaction was that this book was not worth the money. When I reached the end of the book, I actually let out a frustrated sigh and said "that's it?!"

My opinion is that this book would be great for a total couponing novice...someone who has never seriously considered how to use coupons to drastically lower their grocery budget. But if you've already been using coupons somewhat effectively and have a few of your own tricks, you may find this book is full of information you've already figured out on your own.

About the Author
Bertena Varney spent her collegiate career studying vampires in her history, mythology, sociology, and criminology classes. She would find anyway to include vampires in anything that she did. Her favorites studies were pop culture and mythology. She completed her academic career with a BA and MA in Social Science and Education and an MA in sociology and criminology. She is currently a sociology professor at Southcentral Kentucky Community College in Bowling Green, KY. She is the author of Lure of the Vampire and Lure of the Vampire: Revamped and author and editor of Vampire News: Tasty Bits You Can Sink Your Fangs Into, co contributor of Vampire News: The Not So End Times Edition, and contributor to both The Witching Hour and Sirens Conference Compendium. Her role playing character was used by Elizabeth Loraine in a collaboration on a fiction novella titled, Lillian: A Vampire's Story. Lure of the Vampire by Bertena Varney, MA was a very interesting and informative novella. In her short book she wrote in depth titled chapters ranging from Vampires in History, Vampires in Literature, Vampires in Film, Vampires on TV, Vampires for Children and Vampires in Real Life, just to name a few. She offered special guest interviews with fellow authors and persons to add emphasis to the articles along with plenty of wonderful websites to keep you busy for awhile.
In her Religion section, she explained that Religious beliefs are that the drinking of blood by a vampire is a "sin" and can be proven in the Old Testament. They site such stories as Lilith, Cain and Judas to back up this "sin" they believe. In her Children section, she reminds us that the vampire on Sesame Street have been around a long time. She examined how children are introduced to vampires at an early age with Count Chocolate Cereal, Halloween gummies and costumes; there are many other TV shows (like Count Duckula and My Babysitter Is a Vampire) and books for children that cover the subject matter of vampires. She has included a rather extensive list of movies and TV shows that has involved vampires and has also included a list of all the actors that have played Dracula over the years. She examined the vampire's role on young adults. She believes that vampires provide an outlet for them to experiment, make friends and develop, finding safety, stability and acceptance along the way. This was very interesting and I guess even as an adult, as I read about vampires, I find the same thing. Her section on Recreation discussed the plentiful websites dedicated to vampires, vampire role-playing games and plain old video games.
Her Real Life section is the one that I found particularly interesting. She spoke about the different kinds of vampires and the man that is on the cover of her book. She included an interview with him as well. I had always thought, as a child, that there was only one kind of vampire, the Sanguarians who required the drinking of blood. As I got older and started to research vampires, I found the Paranic/Energy/Psychic vampires that feed off the energy a person emits naturally. Her book explained that in addition to these two kinds of vampires, there is a Tantric/Sexual vampire, a lifestyle vampire that dresses up and is just into all things vampire, and then there is an Elemental vampire. What is an Elemental vampire? I wondered the same thing. She explains it as one that feeds off natural phenomenon like lightening, natural disasters, etc. She educated me and I love to learn new things! She examined the man on the cover, who is known as Vlad the Gothic Magician. He is a living vampire who understands the concept of blood and energy. He is also a Magician and performs regularly but not to children's birthday parties only. He has an older clientele for the most part due to his subject matter. He agreed to be on the cover of her book and the rest was history.
Bertena states that the vampire phenomenon has risen 75% recently and there is a call for anything and everything vampire related. She believes the vampire rage, "Represents what we fear most at that moment" and that's why it's so popular. She cautions that when dealing with vampires, "Not all things are what they appear". She has a wide variety of interests but she always comes back to vampires as her favorite. She started this book as a paper for her Masters course. Since then, after much research, she has turned it into a book worth reading for any vampire and newbie vampire lover. I really enjoyed this book, though that's not surprising as I love vampires. She reiterated some things I already knew, explained some things' origins and practices that I also knew, and educated me on several new aspects of her book as well. She was very thorough and not only told you something but added examples to emphasize her point. The wealth of her knowledge is unparalleled. I usually start a book and put it down to come back to it later. Once I started reading her book, I couldn't put it down and was distressed when I had to do so to perform everyday tasks. Luckily, it was a quick and easy read. It really engulfed me, drew me into the book as I read. I commend her for such a comprehensive and wonderful book. I'm glad I took the time to read it as I was thoroughly entertained.

I read "Lure of the Vampire" by Bertena Varney. The book is basically a survey of everything you could possibly want to know about vampires. It has a lot of good information, some of it very strange and off the wall. However, the main sections that had writing from the author had misspellings and incorrect word choice (every instead of very for example). I am not a huge fan of vampires to start with. What really got to me though is that the last section of the book is an about me section in which the author states this will be used as a *textbook* for a college class that she is teaching. She has two masters degrees and she didn't bother to spell check a novel/textbook that was published.

However much the writing style bothered me, there was a lot of good and interesting information presented in the book. It had information (easy to read lists) on a multitude of topics related to vampires starting with their history and moving to film and people who believe they are real life vampires. It also included essays written by various contributors (which had a much more polished writing style) and a few interviews with various "vampires" of today. I believed the information was good due to a very extensive bibliography in the back of the book which did show that a great deal of research had been done.

Personally, vampires are not my cup of tea and I skimmed over portions of this book, however, for a true vampire aficionado, this would be a great and thought-provoking book.

I would give it 2.5 out of 5 stars - good information, but it needed some more revision before it went to press.

I can't believe I'm having this much fun WHILE opening my intuitive faculties!

I've tried three or four tarot books that offer exercises on building intuition. Most of them were quite good, but none of them had "just the right" combination of exercises and tone of instruction to help me break down the walls blocking me from my intuitive faculties. I suspect that the key to opening one's intuition is a very individual thing, and each one of us must find that teacher with whom we connect. Gina is that teacher for me. Without sounding like one's instant best friend, Gina comes across very naturally...her effervescent but down to earth personality appealed to me very much. While I'm still working through this workbook on my second deck (the Lo Scarabeo Universal - the first one was the Cosmic Tarot) and I have yet to try the Inner Guide meditation, I can tell you that my floodgates have opened to an unbelievable extent...the common-sensing exercise has opened up both decks to me. It had never occurred to me that smell, touch, etc. could "come through" when I was looking at a card. Prior to Gina's book, I was, sadly, a rather mechanistic, intellectually-based reader. Now I am able to "pull" information that my guinea-pig friends are amazed to hear that I never would have been able to access. Of especial value is her grounding the room/venue then grounding and redistributing one's own energy (her preliminary exercises.) I can't wait to finish the book then order another one to do my Morgan-greer. In fact, as soon as I can, I want to consult her for a reading. Yes, there are other good intuitive books; some of them are much longer, with many more exercises, but I like being able to write (in pencil) in her space provided, and her exercises are just the right amount so as not to intimidate. We want to BUILD our confidence and trust in our abilities, not intimidate ourselves with exercise overload. My ONLY quibble is that I wish this book had come in a wire spiral bound format so that the pages would stay flat. Great work, Gina!!! You have helped me immensely.

Like many people who have always been told they have "the gift" I thought I should know how to use Tarot cards. But it just never made sense to me. Too many cards to keep up with. I'm challenged at Poker for pity's sake. But...no more. Thanks to this amazingly simple, straightforward, and easy to read work book I can now use a Tarot deck fluently, confidently, and accurately. If you are intimidated by Tarot or want a fresh and personalized approach to the art, this work book is for YOU!

This workbook makes learning your deck incredibly easy. It is well organized, and the exercises are very effective and easy to follow. I have made notes on every single page, and want to buy one of these workbooks for each of my decks!
