Energy and the City, by Joan T Eischen

Women are critical for the future success of the energy industry. Talent scarcity has gained new relevance now that energy is such a hot topic in international politics. “Energy and the City” profiles thirty-one senior executive women in the energy industry. The women interviewed talked about the changes to both the workplace and home front, which brought for those who followed better work environments and personal choices. The book focuses on the challenges women faced as a minority in a room full of men and how they overcame obstacles. In the interviews that were conducted, three overarching themes emerged. •Visibility leads the discussion on the first major areas: creating your own personal brand and finding your voice in the shift from team player to leader. •Sponsorship is required for advancement. Mentoring is valuable for personal development and networking is essential, but women need sponsors to get ahead. •Work/life balance is the largest obstacle for career advancement and the women interviewed share their experiences on how they managed career and family. Embarking on a new career can be daunting. If you are uncertain about your place in an organization or industry, you can find yourself wondering, “Is it just me?” While this tendency is not unique to women, the guidance of women who have come before gives you the confidence to move forward in your career from entry level to executive level. Energy and the City helps readers to climb the corporate ladder and avoid missteps along the way.

A very biased opinion....
By Maarten (TX)
Full disclosure: I am the authors husband and of course I am Very biased. Nevertheless I would like to share some views on Energy and the City. You will correctly assume that I have had the pleasure of reading a number of different versions of Joan's first book, I did!

Frankly it has been quite an eyeopener. I have worked in the energy sector for almost 30 years and indeed it is an industry where one finds more men than women. Even when I studied mechanical engineering there were only a few female students around. Technical as the industry is, it is not such a surprise that one finds more male than female engineers. However, this industry is about much more than valves, manifolds, rigs, geology and fluid dynamics. It is a complex world where many systems interact and where people from very different cultures and talents need to work together.

This book is about 50% of the talent that could work in the industry but not always makes it to the top of the talent pipeline. Joan lets successful women speak about their experiences and gives them the opportunity to pass on their learning and experience to young women that can and should follow them. The industry needs diverse talent and much more team work using all available resources to have a chance to be able to supply enough energy in a safe and responsible manner.

What struck me as a male executive in the oil and gas world is how many obstacles we as men from time to time put in the way of women to succeed. Most of the times we do this without knowing or without appreciating the valor of maintaining oneself as a minority in a sea of (ever more grey haired) men.

So, even though the men are not the subject of the book, the opportunity to read about the experiences of those women that have made it may well give the men some reason for reflection and calibration.

Your next boss may be one of the women that have given time to talk about their experience in the industry in this book. If anything it provides a great inside in their background and thinking.

Talking about energy the question is often oil, gas, wind, electricity or nuclear? The answer is: we need all to fill the exploding energy demand. The same holds for the people. We need all the talent for the challenges in the energy supply for the future. This book will stimulate women to join in the challenge and be a success. It will give men a list of issues to watch.

A Must Read
By CJSmiles
I had the honor of meeting Joan at a professional womens' networking event sponsored by KPMG (their KNOW group) and I thoroughly enjoyed her talk, which was a 'cliff notes' version of the book. I walked away with many new ideas for my career development. Thank you! I look forward to learning more by reading your book. I am in the energy industry and personally recognize some of the examples you shared; however, I have been in many industries during my 20+ year career (working within and going-into as an external service provider) and know that the stories in your book can educate and inspire women in all industries. Thank you, Joan, for sharing your story and the insights you have gained along the way.

First impressions
By Irene
I bought the book and just started to read it during my last travel to Paris. The first impression is fantastic, I started my reading from the dual career and work-life balance part, because this is a very critical aspect of my life now (with 2 children and a fantastic husband that works even more than me) and I found a lot of useful suggestions, fun, and I was also moved in some real cases. I'll continue to read the book during my holiday.
