In doubt? Get it!
By Caitlyn Lillo
I just received Critter Costuming, and I must say that I LOVE it. It is a must have for anyone who is interested in making any type of mascot style costume. It covers everything from design and planning to tools and materials you would need, head and body construction to traveling and performing. It also has a helpful list places to order materials that are mentioned in the book. Even interviews with professional cosume makers, performers, and material specialists are included.

It has advice on almost every question you could think of asking about making this style costumes and some things you wouldn't think about until you were stuck (such as how to sew in a zipper correctly).

I must admit that I was hesitant to order the book at first because, one, I thought it cost a little more than I was willing to spend, and two, because it was spiral bound... but let me just say that the price is definitely worth it, and the spiral does not make it any lower quality.. and in fact, it's much easier to lay flat and reference when you are working than a hard- or paperback book.

It doesn't matter if you are just starting your first suit, you have already made a few but would still like a good reference guide, or you have never made one before but are interested, I would definitely recommend getting this book. It is one of the best investments I've made this year.

Get some insights into how one Texas judge looks at the world, and why some Texans think the way they do. Meet his family and get a taste of old-time Winona, Texas (pop. 622). Murders, suicides, and accidents happen in the country as well as in the city. The mysteries of death on television are solved using CSI technology, on-the-spot DNA testing, and all kinds of gimmicks, all within the hour. In real life, the solutions take more time, and some mysteries will never be solved. A few stories of death linger in one’s mind, while others will be buried on the lips of those in the grave. Laugh, cry, wonder, and take a closer look at yourself through these memorable stories. Death comes to us all. You may find it is time to start living—maybe even living with the dead! From Chapter 17 Inquest #1236: Happy Birthday   “I bought him the shotgun for his birthday. I told him not to play with it. It was not a toy,” exclaims an emotional wife, crying her eyes out. “He had done this before. Like it was a game.” “Don’t worry,” he would say, pointing the gun to his head and pulling the trigger. “It’s not loaded.” The last time, it was. “Through the words of this book you will see through my eyes what I have seen throughout the years.”

Thoroughly Engaging
By Donna Dozier
I recommend this book quite highly, but before I begin with my praise, I should point out that I've known Mitch and his family my whole life. Not only did me and mine buy gas at T.J.'s Texaco, but I also played with DeDe, Mitch's niece mentioned in the book, when we were little kids, as well as going to Winona schools with her siblings. And, I also admit to crossing paths with Mitch in his official capacity---one time being his ride-along with a DPS Trooper, who clocked me doing 72 in a 55 mph zone on I-20 . I had to go to Mitch to pay the fine. I also served on a jury where Mitch was in his role as Judge. And, I was on the receiving end of a sad phone call when Mitch had to call to inform me that my dad had passed away.

So, now that all that is out of the way, let me say that I have nothing but praise for Mitch's writing style, as well as the stories he chose to tell. I know so many of the people mentioned, and because I do know them, I know how well he captured their "way." The small town flavor bursts through and is interwoven throughout, because the town itself is a character in its own right.

The chapter about Dale David Geddie, my friend from high school, had to have been the hardest thing to write. I know it was so hard to read. But, it was done with such clarity and straightforwardness. (It was also hard to read with all those tears I was crying while trying to read, too!) It's such a wonderful tribute to Dale, and while I know he'd turn red and be embarrassed by the emotion and honor paid to him, every word is true.

Read this book, even if you've never heard of Winona, Texas. It's well done and thoroughly engaging! Congratulations, Judge Mitch! GREAT JOB!!

Couldn't put it down
By Amazon Customer
Downloaded and read this book in one evening - actually until about 5AM. The Judge is funny, honest, and real. Many of his accounts are people and places I know - which just added to the "can't stop reading this" feeling. The flashbacks to his childhood and growing up in East Texas had me waking up my husband in the middle of the night to "hey, listen to what the Judge wrote". The book is well written, thought provoking, and offers the reader a peak behind the scenes of some very tragic events.

Small town life +
By Spacer
Disclaimer: I am in and of this book, NOT the author, but directly involved; so I probably can't really give an objective review, but this is my opinion nonetheless.

Inquests is at once funny, sad, nostalgic, brilliant, sage, morbid, and uplifting. It is a story about family, humor, small town life, Winona, Texas, and Inquests - basically in that order.

Small town life figures not-so-small in this book, and the author's experiences and semi-autobiography will be familiar and wonderful to folks acquainted with the small town atmosphere, and perhaps illuminating to those who are not as acquainted.

The author is from North East Texas ("eas'taxes" locally) and it shows with charming style. As you read you may feel like you are sitting in the Judge's office in downtown Winona, listening to him spin a yarn, chewed but never lit cigar in the side of his mouth. The image & atmosphere comes across very clear in the book, and is authentic.

Kudos to the author, editors and all involved with the book, it's definitely one-of-a-kind.

An Italian Hand Story, by Amanda L. Jenkins

Mandy always looked forward to visiting Nana. She would race her sisters into the magical house and run up to her holding out her hand. Her first words were always, "Nana, will you do my hand?" With a smile, Nana would rub a circle, round and round, in the center of Mandy’s hand, right on the tickly part of the palm. She would say, “Questa sta la fontanella che ci beve la paperella...” Mandy always wondered why Nana was so surprised that she wanted her to tell the story over and over again. It wasn’t just a children’s nursery rhyme to her. It was Nana’s Italian hand story, and it challenged this girl to become a storyteller just like her great-grandmother. Both tender and funny, this book will delight readers of all ages. The brilliant illustrations add to the memoir's charm with Rebecca Reck's conception of the unfortunate duck, secret staircase, and little Italian lady with lavender-white hair and gold-rimmed glasses. A pronunciation guide is included at the back of the book to assist with telling this classic Italian rhyme to your favorite loved ones.

It Does the Heart and Soul Good!
By VersatileReader
When a story creates an impression where the reader is transported not only to the story being read, but to his/her own memories, the story must be an example of the power of words. "An Italian Hand Story" is a wonderful example of how familial generations can be connected for a lifetime including the use of memories. The simplistic, yet meaning-filled, story focuses on the memory of a young girl and her grandmother. For those of us with positive grandmother memories, this story warms the heart and causes the hidden, and perhaps forgotten, memories to resurface enveloping the soul with a warmness that can only be enjoyed individually.

The beautiful artwork accents the words on each page.

The combination of words and illustration create a winning combination that all ages will enjoy for a lifetime.

Well written and wonderfully illustrated book to read to my new Grandson
By Carol Oneill
I felt like a kid all over again reading this book. The connection between Mandy and her Nana reminded me much of my own relationship with my grandmother. As a grandmother myself I can't wait to read this book to my grandson so that I can begin to create those moments I remember so fondly as a child.

The storyline is poignant and emphasizes the importance of family, togetherness and enjoying the simple things in life which can get so lost in the rush of the world today.

The illustrations are, in one word, captivating. I found myself staring at them for several minutes, taking in every detail before turning the page.

This is a glorious book that I know I will enjoy sharing with my grandson for many years to come!

Seeing, Knowing, Being: A Guide to Sacred Awakenings, by John Greer

From ancient Taoist sages and Sufi mystics to Christian contemplatives and contemporary Zen masters, Seeing, Knowing, Being explores the profound truth behind all the world's mystic traditions: Living a spiritual life has nothing to do with fixing ourselves. It is simply a matter of awakening to what we already are. The real work of self-discovery--and the answer to our suffering, emptiness, and loss of meaning--is learning to see in a different way. "The mystical adventure is all in the seeing," says John Greer. "From departure to arrival, nothing changes but our eyes."

But the process isn't that simple. In this all-embracing work that is destined to become a classic, Greer artfully traces the steps and stages of the delicate process of awakening. He shows how we can move from society's hand-me-down version of reality to the wonder of our true nature--from conceptual, habitual patterns of thinking to knowing the truth by being.

Like a master artist who captures an image and stirs something deep inside of us, Greer also highlights nearly one hundred evocative metaphors, as varied and colorful as the sages themselves, to kindle your imagination and spark your intuition--to shift your perspective and shake you into an awareness that no amount of explanation can.

What Greer shows, with great wisdom and compassion, is that when you put aside the map of the mind, you can follow the compass of your heart. You can move through the details of life--going to work, raising a family, throwing out the garbage--and still experience the wonders and oneness of life with deep reverence, gratitude, and joy.

"Shows an author who has wrestled with the truly difficult questions of a spiritual life and who has emerged with grace and insight. Greer bases his work on the great spiritual systems, but he then leads the way to a significant understanding beyond tradition."
--DENG MING-DAO, 365 Tao: Daily Meditations and Chronicles of Tao

"Skillfully penetrates the core issues and endless possibilities that welcome us on our personal spiritual quest....A beautiful and genuine work that touches both heart and spirit and gently helps us break through old ways of thinking to the wonder of what's real." --PATRICIA SPADARO, Honor Yourself: The Inner Art of Giving and Receiving

"A beautifully written and comprehensive guide to the best of the wisdom traditions. Seeing, Knowing, Being abounds with images, metaphors, and stories to help the reader perceive the unseen, grasp the ephemeral."
--CATHERINE INGRAM, author of Passionate Presence, In the Footsteps of Gandhi, and A Crack in Everything

"This book draws on the great mystical traditions and philosophies of the West and East and shows, in an extremely artful way, how spiritual realization can be lived in the fullest and most inclusive way possible. . . . I highly recommend it."
--PETER FENNER, PH.D., author of Radiant Mind: Awakening Unconditioned Awareness

"Wise and serene."
--Publishers Weekly

"An intelligent and truly transformative book."
--Library Journal

"Books often describe journeys. Seeing, Knowing, Being actually takes you on one. . . . A profound expedition into the true nature of life."
--MATTHEW FLICKSTEIN, author and producer of the award-winning film With One Voice

“Carl Jung described Gnostic Intermediaries as people who imbibe a wisdom tradition so deeply that they are able to translate and transmit its ideas to another culture. John Greer is a Gnostic Intermediary who has imbibed core ideas from the world’s major spiritual traditions and transmits them beautifully.”
—ROGER WALSH, M.D., Ph.D., author of Essential Spirituality

From the Author
Here are some of my favorite quotations from the book. Thank you for considering this material; I hope you'll take a moment to share your thoughts about SEEiNG, KNOWiNG, BEiNG in the section of the book's Amazon page. -- John Greer

"Serious seekers come to realize that it is our way of seeing the world that has caused our suffering, not the world itself. This realization is reflected in a theme that appears over and over again in the mythology and sacred writings of humanity." (p. 9)

"The mystical adventure is all in the seeing: from departure to arrival, nothing changes but our eyes." (p. 13)

"Through years of conditioning, we learn to see ourselves as separate and alone in a world of endless divisions, and this delusion of self brings the suffering and meaninglessness so characteristic of the human condition." (p. 13)

"The mind acts like a prism, separating what is originally one into the manifold aspects of existence." (p. 25)

"We are likely to identify ourselves with our thinking. What we think becomes what we are. That is why we guard our ideas, opinions, and beliefs so tenaciously and jealously: we take them for the very core of our being." (p. 34)

"To find what we are looking for, to experience what the ancients herald, we must set aside our concepts for the moment, and open our senses to what is now." (p. 44)

"There comes a point on the spiritual path when everything we have learned comes into question....Since knowledge is inherently dualistic, based on the discriminative process of thought and language, everything we know is characterized by division and fragmentation." (p. 65)

"Spiritual truth cannot be realized through these cognitive processes, and all that is learned in this manner must be unlearned in the end." (p. 65)

"It is through the pain and suffering our mistakes produce that we ultimately become seekers on the path to freedom." (p. 96)

"The flower is perfect as it is and need make no apologies....the flower doesn't have meaning. It is meaning." (p. 120)

"Modern life offers one more reason -- perhaps the most significant --why the time is ripe for a return to spirituality: the fact that so many people today have the opportunity to experience the shallowness of material success firsthand." (p. 114)

"We are not seekers, though we use the term constantly. No matter what we think we are about when we set out on our spiritual exploration, we are not going anywhere, nor is there anything we need to find. The pursuit of spiritual truth has nothing to do with fixing ourselves. It is a matter of discovering what is and always has been. It is simply awakening to what we already are." (p. 141)

"To awaken is to remember what we have known all along." (p. 191)

"Life undivided depends on attention undivided." (p. 234)

"Self Delusion"
an excerpt from the book
SEEiNG, KNOWiNG, BEiNG:
A Guide to Sacred Awakenings
by John Greer
Published by True Compass Press
Reprinted here with permission.

When we are born, our vision is fresh. The world as we first experience it is undifferentiated and timeless, and we have no real perception of self or other. We can see the magic of life without filters and become totally lost in fascination, one with our surroundings.

But then we are educated, and we eat from the Tree of Knowledge.

As we are taught language and the lessons of good and evil, our vision becomes restricted. We start to see the world through the dualistic filter of concepts, with the grid of borders and boundaries it superimposes on everything. The holistic wide-angle lens view of our birth is transformed, and our vision refocuses on the sharply defined piecemeal view of reality that makes up our modern culture.

Conceptual habits become unconscious assumptions that automatically frame our reality. We live within the confines of a hand-me-down view of the world that everyone around us shares, and we never even suspect the possibility of seeing in another way.

We begin to see ourselves as separate from everything and everyone, and the structure of language itself deepens the delusion even further. Every verb requires a subject, articulated or implied, and personal pronouns are necessary to communicate within the rules of grammar. "I" is not the same as "you," and everything that we say or read or hear reinforces the division. We say I, me, my, and mine almost every time we speak.

The process of identification with self is initiated by our parents when they name us and, in effect, tell us who we are. As we grow up, the ideas is reinforced and endlessly repeated at every age and in every setting.

Whenever we meet new people, for example, from kindergarten to retirement, introductions begin with our names. Likewise, we identify ourselves in nearly every phone conversation we have.

As if the enculturation of language were not enough, our sense of identity is further solidified by an extensive paper trail, beginning with our certificates of birth. With each year, more documents accumulate around us: school records, medical histories, credit reports, legal agreements, tax statements -- just to name a few.

As adults, whether we are making a purchase, visiting the doctor, casting a vote, or doing any number of other common things, we are routinely asked to show proof of who we are. The process goes on and on.

Modern modes of thought strengthen the idea of the isolated self at the deepest levels of our awareness. Science, for example, sets the standard for knowledge in the developed world, and it places great value on empirical objectivity. From science's early beginnings, any connection between subject and object was thought to invalidate whatever results were produced. The self that observes and measures the world must be totally detached from the object being observed, eliminating the possibility of any bias or influence, so as to understand it accurately.

And this principle, inherent in the scientific method, has filtered into our understanding of the whole world, our collective view of who and what we are. Any time there is a difference of opinion, no matter how insignificant the subject, someone is likely to invoke objectivity: "Looking at it objectively..." we might say, or "Leaving our personal feelings out of it..."

We watch for any prejudice in others' arguments, as well as our own, and are quick to recognize when someone is too close to an issue and therefore unable to divorce his or her personal view from the debate. The idea is that facts, like scientific findings, are most valid when we keep the self sealed off from them.

Accompanying the delusion of self and our perceived separation from everything else is the assumption of personal responsibility, a phenomenon that as far as we can tell is unknown in the vast remainder of the animal kingdom.

We first come up against it when we are toddlers with that growing sense of me. It is at this point that we begin to be judged as good or bad based upon our behavior.

As we grow older, whether we get a star on our first-grade spelling test, are voted the most popular in high school, or win Employee of the Month, we typically feel a sense of personal pride and accomplishment. Sooner or later, such judgments from others lead to self-judgments, and this suggests the existence of division within each of us.

Are there two different selves -- a self that thinks and acts and a self that observes and judges?

Questions like this derive from humankind's unique capacity to be aware of its own awareness: to be both the knower and the known, both the figure and the ground of our being. The same division found in every aspect of our external affairs, self separated from everything else, clearly has a parallel within us as well. This is the reason for our concerns about such concepts as self-control, self-restraint, or self-improvement.

It is amusing to think of our dogs or cats doing anything to improve themselves. Their daily contentment and sense of peace in being just as they are, so apparent in their daily behavior, is the envy of our kind. It offers stark contrast to the torment and regret in which so many people live out their days. . . .

~ IMAGES OF SELF ~

I have chosen analogies to capitalize on the well-known capacity of the right hemisphere of the brain to see in pictures and find unity where the left brain cannot. I hope you will be able to "see" the likeness I am presenting and view the topic in a different light. I hope that your imagination may be kindled and your intuition awakened to the possibility of seeing the world in a completely different way. . . .

RORSCHACH TEST_--_You may be familiar with the Rorschach test, which is sometimes used in psychological evaluations. It uses abstract black images, like inkblots, starkly silhouetted against a plain background. The tester asks the client to describe what he or she sees in each image; the answers are thought to be useful diagnostically. A person who is peaceful and well adjusted will probably see something pleasant and nonthreatening. Someone filled with anger or emotionally disturbed, on the other hand, is apt to find violent scenes in the figure. The nature of the reality we experience every day is like a Rorschach response -- a function of a very similar relationship between the world we perceive and the way we perceive it. The self is a reference point, a set of hopes, fears, and expectations based on our unique life history and conditioning. This determines what we notice, value, and reject. The observer is not separate from what is observed, but participates in shaping what is seen.

PRISON CELL --_Someone who is incarcerated for many years may keep pictures in his or her cell that are cheerful and reminiscent of the outside world. Photographs of old friends and lovers, mountains or open fields, may evoke sensations no longer available in any other way. But regardless of how the physical environment is manipulated, it cannot set the prisoner free. This image points to the futility of trying to escape our discontent by redecorating the ego. People who feel boxed in by life may change the furniture, buy new cars, or move into bigger houses. They may enroll in acting classes, learn judo, or take public-speaking courses to dress up the images they project to others. Such cosmetics for the ego have little effect on the real issue, though. Just as new decorations in a jail cell leave the reality of imprisonment unchanged, the problems inherent in the human condition cannot be remedied with self-improvement activities. We are locked inside a conceptual identity that precludes the freedom that is our birthright. Only by realizing our true nature will we get out of this prison.

A very well grounded work from Mr Greer's direct experience. GREAT stuff!
By Charlie Hayes
What I love about this book is the breadth of included wisdom-pointers from a great variety of Nondual traditions. The author shares his own experience right out of the gate, then offers a veritable feast of possibilities that may resonate for a variety of seekers along the pathless path to "the home we never left", the Eternal Stateless No-Place that is What IS.

I recommend this book without reservation, whether you are just starting a search for Truth or a seasoned veteran of the futile search for that which already always is, fully present though usually completely overlooked, until a vibrant, alive work such as this comes along and the looking turns into natural seeing.

Enjoy it. I sure did! May the seeking end as the seeker evaporates into THIS... as-it-is.

With great respect and Love, Charlie Hayes - Author of Being, Awake and Alive

seeing knowing being
By Lewis
A wonderful metaphorical journey for those that recognize the universality of man's desire to believe in a supreme being and yearn to grow closer to a true spiritual life. John Greer does a great job of moving you from the frailties of human life toward "sacred awakenings" in a relevant and down to earth manner!

A must read!
By Dr. Jim Young
Had I read John Greer's "Seeing, Knowing, Being, A Guide to Sacred Awakenings" before I began giving myself to exposing the non-duality of esoteric spirituality through my own study and writings, I would not have uttered a single word. Having studied non-duality for years, I would put this amazingly clear and absolutely profound book at the top of an elite pile consisting of one book only--the single source for extending life's journey into deeper meaning.

A masterpiece, much like a majestic work of art that reveals its beauty by being at one with it instead of comparing it with what is thought to be real, Greer utilizes sacred mystical truths and poetic renderings combined with the ageless wise counsel of mystics and sages to bypass human concepts. He brings all this to earth through descriptive images near the end of each chapter, each noting how what appears to be true actually is but a metaphor that grounds one in the inner knowing found in esoteric spirituality. While one would think non-duality to be a study only for the most spiritually evolved and thus difficult to access for the spiritual neophyte, John Greer's gift to us flows freely and easily, a journey that takes us into spiritual reality without seeking the answers found in what already awaits our awareness. Indeed, John leads us faithfully into our own Being, never again to be confused with our erroneous identify as a seeker and doer of truth. Make the investment in this extraordinary book. You'll be glad you did.

Winged, by April Kelly

"It's hard to stop reading...fasten your seat belt for an enjoyable flight." -Kirkus Reviews What if the cavalier decision you made about your child the day she was born had the power to reverberate for more than thirty years, dividing the nation, costing three people their lives, and destroying your family? Homeless teen Allison Fitzgerald believes the two tiny membranes on her baby’s back are not, as the doctors claim, a surgically correctable birth defect, but a pair of wings. And after having a vision of her child flying, she even names her Angel. The “wings” will never flap, fly or lift the child off the ground, but they will engender in Angel a dangerous obsession with flying, an obsession that will one day drive her to attempt the impossible. This darkly comic contemporary reframing of the Icarus and Daedalus myth explores the lengths to which a mother will go to protect her child, and ultimately offers a message of salvation, not just for the family involved, but for all mankind.

About the Author
I was born on Long Island to military parents who would have much preferred a new dining room set. After a peripatetic childhood I did hard time at the University of South Florida before moving to Los Angeles to be either a stand-up comic or a writer. Since writing paid actual money while doing stand-up did not, I signed onto the original writing staff of MORK AND MINDY, leaving two seasons later after having written 15 of the initial 52 episodes, one of which was a finalist for the Humanitas Prize. I then relocated to New York to write and produce the premier season of LOVE, SIDNEY, starring Tony Randall and Swoosie Kurtz, the first prime-time comedy featuring an openly gay lead character (many years before WILL AND GRACE) and the show for which I received my second Emmy nomination. Back to the west coast, I wrote and produced series such as 9 to 5 (the TV version of the feature film), TEACHERS ONLY, starring Lynn Redgrave, and WEBSTER, before co-creating the first half-hour comedy specifically made for cable, SANCHEZ OF BEL AIR. From 1987 to 1991 I stopped doing TV staff work so I could take a four-year course at the oldest homeopathic medical school in England. During that time I worked strictly freelance, supporting myself by writing made-for-television movies and mini-series. After graduating from The College of Homeopathy in London, I returned to television, co-creating the series BOY MEETS WORLD which ran on ABC from 1993 to 2000. In 2000 I moved to a farm in Tennessee, where I now write less soul-sucking material than TV scripts. I have two dogs who stay with me more from Stockholm syndrome than any genuine feeling of affection.

Fresh, intriguing story
By Donna S. Meredith
The strong voice speaking from the pages of Winged, by April Kelly, immediately captures both interest and sympathy. The first paragraph lays out the dilemma--eighteen-year-old Allison just gave birth to a child with what her doctor labels as "a congenital anomaly" on her shoulder blades which should be removed, but the mother believes the bumps are wings.

Allison is a retrospective narrator, looking back on her experiences from a distance. The technique allows the author to condense events at will and end chapters with cliffhangers that keep the reader turning pages breathlessly. Slowly the author reveals secrets: the dysfunctional family Allison was raised in, the truth about Allison's pregnancy, the way she tries to control her world with mental mathematic gymnastics, and the reason Allison is telling her story now.

Winged seizes the imagination because of its unusual premise, but it wins our hearts because it is, after all, a love story. The story of our need to search for our perfect "other." The bond between siblings. And, above all, the boundless love of a mother for her child.
It's also the story of the universal need to pursue passions and dreams, often at high cost.

Some potential, but needs a lot of work
By Lily
The book is based on a smart concept, but its execution is amateurish -- resulting in a story that is more cliched and predictable than dark and moving. The style, too, needs polish; the dialogue often sound stilted or fake, and everything is described obviously (rather than following the classic "show, don't tell" maxim). Perhaps most frustrating of all, the book desperately needs a good proofreading -- sentences beginning with lowercase letters, capital letters randomly appearing in the middle of sentences, a total misunderstanding of proper comma usage, and paragraphs splitting in two in the middle of a sentence.

These flaws make it hard to take the book seriously, which is sad because the story at the bottom of it all could be worthwhile. The author definitely shows promise, as particularly demonstrated by the book's excellent opening. This shocking flash-forward was emotionally powerful, well-scripted, and intriguing enough to keep me interested (despite the fairly shoddy writing) until I was invested in the book enough that I needed to reach the ending.

The book's ideas are clever, but they need to be presented with greater subtlety. It was worth one read, but I won't read it again, and I'm glad I read it for free.

Simply outstanding!
By Anca D
Shades of Gray is a strikingly original and deeply moving story with an astonishing twist at the end. Andy Holloman renders brilliantly the tale of John Manning, a loving father and a reputable business man, whose incursion in the drug world fundamentally changes his life. Holloman makes his debut as a novelist by taking both his characters and readers on a journey where they equally experience tenderness, frustration, pain and truth. A raw, honest and captivating book that would make a great script for a movie!

The Night Land, A Story Retold, by James Stoddard, William Hope Hodgson

An adventure of both science fiction and fantasy—one of the great love stories--this is William Hope Hodgson's masterpiece, rewritten for the modern reader. Penned in 1912, The Night Land is considered by many to be a work of genius, but one written in a difficult, archaic style that readers often find impenetrable. As a labor of love, James Stoddard has rewritten Hodgson's book to bring it to a wider audience. The story opens in the 19th century, but quickly moves to the far future, where the sun has gone out, leaving the world in a darkness broken only by strange lights and mysterious fires. Over the ages, monsters and evil forces have descended to the earth, compelling the surviving humans to take refuge in a great pyramid of imperishable metal built in a miles-deep chasm. The monsters surround the pyramid in a perpetual siege lasting for eons, waiting for the moment when its defenses will fail. But one man, born out of his time, must leave the pyramid to seek his long-lost love though all the perils of the Night Land.

An unsung classic of rare beauty and power.
By Kyle Robinson
William Hope Hodgson's The Night Land is a flawed masterpiece; James Stoddard's remake, A Story Retold, is frighteningly close to being a true masterpiece. He strips the cumbersome prose of Hodgson's original and transports the bewitchingly alien world of the Night Lands into a compelling, readable work.

The Night Land is one of the most important pieces of genre fiction ever written, despite its obscurity. A ferociously original work when published in 1912, it created the Cosmic Horror and Dying Earth subgenres of science fiction, and invented plenty of other sci-fi staples (such as the Force Field.)

The setup can hardly be summarized without coming across as a non-sequitur: Andrew, a bereaved 19th-century English man, experiences an unearthly vision after his beloved wife's death, in which he is reborn millions of years in the future, when darkness and malevolent forces have enveloped the earth after the sun's death, and the last millions of humanity dwell in the Last Redoubt, a massive pyramidal structure shielded from the monsters and cosmic forces. Reincarnated as Andros, he establishes a psychic link with a woman who may be his previous life's lost lover reborn. But she is hundreds of miles away, in a mythical Lesser Redoubt on the verge of destruction. Andros leaves the safety of the Last Redoubt, embarking on a suicide mission to rescue his love and somehow survive the myriad of twisted monsters and horrifying supernatural forces that rule the land.

What follows is a chilling and utterly compelling exploration of a world as entrancing as it is terrifying. More importantly (and surprisingly) it is a love story of astonishing power and radiates with the spirit of the best science fiction - Man's daunting, even impossible, quest to survive the forces of a hostile universe. Rarely has a work been as hopefully in equal measure as despair. This is the fundamental difference between Hodgson and those who followed in his footsteps in writing Cosmic Horror, such as H.P. Lovecraft.

While the Lovecraftian cosmos casts man as a despondent, inconsequential speck in the unfathomable lurchings of ancient deities, Hodgson's Night Lands are surprisingly hopeful, with the occasional benevolent force helping Andros on his quest. This is not a nihilistic and hopeless universe, but one in which values such as Love, Honor, Beauty, and Goodness are ultimately greater than the overwhelming darkness. It is not an atheistic universe but one that echoes the most fundamental needs of humanity, for Salvation's deliverance from Evil and Resurrection's hope of Death's defeat. I don't know if Hodgson or Stoddard are Christians or even theists at all, but both the source novel and Stoddard's remake echo with a hope that will be familiar and welcome to a Christian reader.

Given the starkly original setting of The Night Land, the archetypal quest and love story is not a disappointment but a keystone for readers who would otherwise find the setting too bizarre and unsympathetic. Though over a century old, The Night Land is an eerily prescient story for our melancholic and cynical age. It's refreshing to read a truly heroic hero with no moral ambiguity, as if such a thing would be necessary in such an utterly hostile setting. And Andros' and Naani's relationship is a powerful portrait of love, of the sort rarely seen in modern media: the virtues of self-sacrifice, generosity, and struggling together are key to their romance, their chastity and restraint every bit as striking as their love. Such a perspective on love and commitment is nearly as alien to a twentysomething millennial as the colossal Watchers that lurch toward the Last Redoubt.

To put it simply, The Night Land: A Story Retold is a work of the highest caliber, and strongly recommended to anyone who enjoys science fiction, fantasy, horror, or romance. Those who enjoy this work are strongly recommended to check out John C. Wright's Awake In The Night Land, an anthology of four novellas in the same setting that further explore the world and themes of Hodgson's work to spectacular effect (and follow in close continuity with Stoddard's remake.)

Very well done
By Baritone
I saw the original "Night Land" in a bookstore and either bought it or got it from the library. I remember quoting the last line ("and they three to build the House of Joy,") not that I knew anything about love at the time. I enjoyed it, being somehow able to get through most of the odd language, and got the Kindle version not long ago. When I saw this new "translation," I figured I'd give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. The original leaves out quite a bit: the horrors are not described in as much detail as one would expect. Ironically, this version adds more detail that I both did and did not want: an interpolated scene wherein the ghosts of souls captured by the House of Silence appear to tempt the pyramid's dwellers to their doom. We already know that the House is basically the gate of hell, with those within suffering an unspecified but ghastly and eternal torment. I felt the ghost scene was a tad too much, but it was the only such note in what otherwise is a fine and faithful modernized version. Well done, Mr. Stoddard, and kudos for "diskoi".

Speaking of the House of Silence (which I hadn't previously thought was the size of the Great Redoubt), would Mr. Stoddard or someone else care to comment on the ambiguity of the Silent Ones? The odd critters are described by the narrator as not malicious, provided humans keep their distance, and this new version even suggests that the S.O. don't mean to inflict suffering on humans, Yet the House is most definitely evil, as Naani and the damned youths learn. So which is it? Lonely for friends, or as evil as it gets?

An Epic Masterpiece
By TheAnimeAmigo
This is a great version of the book and it is nicely and professionally translated for modern readers. When I read the original night land by William hope Hodgson it was difficult for me to understand becuase of it's Archaic english that was used in the original book. But this version by James stoddard is so much easier to read and it's more interesting becuase he added more detail to the story which Hodgson had failed to acknowledge. This is an epic masterpiece of fantasy, science fiction, romance, horror and adventure all put together. I highly recommend this version of The Night land to any readers out there.

Affirmations to Quickly Rewire Your Brain
By David K Drews
This book is much different than standard advice related to affirmations. Incorporating the latest brain research, it explains ways to write and say affirmations in ways that help you quickly rewire your brain, creating a "new you." For example, the authors tell you how to use "process language" so your subconscious brain won't say "yeah right" and avoid change when you say your affirmations.

The book also covers "declarations," powerful statements of intent that help you not just imagine a new you, but actually take steps to follow through. It is important to use these with affirmations for personal change.

The book also touches on hypnosis and hypnotic language, and ways to say your affirmations while in a mild trance, and word them in a "hypnotic" way, so as to convince your brain that you really can become a new person.

The authors provide a lot of examples of affirmations related to finance, weight loss, general success, etc. They also provide basic advice related to changing your attitude to make your affirmations.

Overall, the authors pack a lot of information into this book (but it is still easy to read), making it a kind of inspirational handbook of composing and using affirmations.

A Breath of Fresh Air
By Rumio L
If you want to change your life for good, then this is one book you should consider. It's very well-researched, thought provoking and contains snippets from author's own life.

I've read hundreds of books on law of attraction, spirituality etc. and I got several new insights from this book that I didn't get from anywhere else. Concepts of Neuroplasticity, NLP, Quantum Mechanics, Detachment etc. have been taken into account to describe how our brain shapes our reality and how to program our brain through affirmations to live a happy life.

I just have one suggestion that I found to be highly effective while creating affirmations is to detach your being from your self. For me the self is "I" you can call it God or whatever and then this is You and Me. If you create affirmation by your name like David instead of I it becomes much more directed toward you. Rumio or David can become hungry, rich, poor etc and eventually die, but I is divine, it can never die.

Though there are plenty of books available on the subject but this one book stands apart from the rest. Highly recommended.
