Protect Yourself

This book was painful to read,and that's being kind. I felt like this story was a compilation of various life stories all smashed together in one book.Shay's character is one hot mess. I can't tell if she is a girl from the streets who holds her own; because the next minute she's a naive virgin and moments later she's this hip holding,neck twisting girl from the wrong side of the tracks.
I'm not sure what Matty saw in her (other than a quick lay) because as a main character there was nothing exciting or loveable about her even to me as the reader. This street wise girl loses her virginity to a guy from the dinner in a seedy motel seriously?? The story wasn't developed enough at all to even understand why these characters from two different walks of life were attracted to each other. A 33 year old white man, CEO isn't interested in a junior college student/ waitress if there isn't something intoxicating and alluring about her. The author failed to develop this.
The love scenes were unappealing. The first sex scene he is pounding it out with a "virgin". My first thoughts were ouch, she gonna be really sore in the morning. That pretty much set the tempo for the love scenes. Matty didn't seem to be a skilled or steamy lover, and I just wanted it to be over quickly.
In short this novel was an exhaustive swirl of nothingness. This book is written for a ghetto audience with fantasies of a "protector. Shay was too "real", and nothing about Matty was real. This was my first book, and my last with Mallory. The author needs to invest in a good editor for grammar, as well as with plot development and some research on the love habits of successful business men so that she can accurately portray them. Protector yourself and your money...invest in another novel.

Naive

Although I liked this book, I was very disappointed with the characters. Matty on one hand can't emotionally separate from his ex of 10 years; although she unashamedly cheats on him and actually tells him that they can just be bed-buddies while she dates the guy she cheated on him with. She is egotistical and a gold-digger, but he still feels as if he owes her.
Shay on the other hand is trying to make her way through college, but has a roommate who is also a shameless slut (with no boundaries when it comes to her friend's man) and has no respect for their shared accommodation, as roomie continues to bring men into their room. Shay also feels that she is in debt to her roommate (due to a previous favor), and gives leeway to roomie's behavior.
Both characters (Matty and Shay), although from different sides of the track, are equally naïve. And this naivety backfires, as they both are cheated out of the life they deserved together. If only Matty had a stronger backbone and washed his hands (entirely) of his no-good cheating ex, and Shay, who raised and supported herself, would have spoken up...the chain of events would have never occurred.
I find it hard to swallow that a millionaire and a tough chick from the streets, didn't have enough common sense to see people for what they were, when it was obvious.
Shoulda, woulda, coulda, I guess.

Started off strongly but then... oy.

I really was into this book when I began it. I liked the initial coming together of Shay & Matty's relationship, I liked Shay overall and I thought the drama with selfish folks trying to mess them up had potential to make it really interesting. And then bam, this book just went off the rails. I have two major gripes and a nitpick.
Gripe 1: Matty is a sucker. Big time. I can't get past that even now that I've finished the book. Sometimes you read a book, the hero screws up but by the end he's redeemed himself. I didn't get that with Matty (plus you don't get to really READ about it since there was more of a 'tell, not show' quality to how things played out with the mess he made of things with his dumb choices). Not that Matty is a bad guy nor a douchebag, but he makes some RIDICULOUSLY STUPID choices that are OBVIOUS TO STEVIE WONDER that he's being a fool about and it made me want to reach through my kindle to smack him a la Cher in 'Moonstruck'.
Gripe 2: The first half of the book is really enjoyable but the latter half when the Matty & Shay reconnect is a hot mess. The pacing is off, the story felt rushed and by the end of the book, I was irritated that she hadn't either made it longer or turned in to a two-parter, with the initial relationship as the first book and the reconnection as the second book. After reading several of the "President's GF" books and "Romancing the Mob Boss" series by Mallory Monroe, I am flabbergasted that she didn't turn this into a series or a duo because this begged for it, if only to even out the pacing and story quality.
Nitpick: I've become forgiving of editing mistakes on ebooks. For whatever reason they seem more prolific in ebooks than in print books, but I've learned to cringe and move on quickly. That said, I can forgive Mallory Monroe for several "You was..." statements from the characters, though I found it highly doubtful that Matty would speak as such, but I refuse to forgive reading "deafly ill". NO. It is deathly. Deathly deathly DEATHLY.
Ok, all that said, it's not a bad book, even with the messiness of the 2nd half of the story but it is not as well-written as her other stuff.
