DeFranco taught beginning knitting lessons for a number of years, and elaborated and expanded upon the lesson plans for those classes to create this book. Ms. DeFranco is an accomplished weaver, fiber artist, and language teacher, and has raised many different kinds of wool-bearing animals. She was also one of the co-founders of The Web*sters, a knitter's and weaver's supply store in Ashland, Oregon.

About the Author
Lucy was first introduced to knitting as a young child. She began to knit seriously as a teenager. While living and working on sheep farm, she learned how to spin and weave. She subsequently began raising her own sheep, Angora rabbits, and cashmere goats to further explore creating with her own materials. She was one of the founding members of The Web*sters, a store for knitters, spinners and weavers. While there she taught beginning knitting classes using the Continental method. Students were so impressed with the ease and speed of the method, that she received many requests to write a companion book. This book is structured using the lesson plans from the classes she taught. As well as remaining an active fiber artist, she is currently a professor of Spanish at Southern Oregon University.

Praise for the Continental Method

I get to say my grandmother taught me how to knit when I was very young. However, she used the old 'throw the yarn over' method, still my favorite but highly unpleasant when working with multi-stranded projects. I have attempted to learn the Continental Method on my own, with limited success. I kept twisting my stitches. When I received a gift of the Kindle Fire (I live on a Tall Ship and I was collecting too much ballast because I am a *big* fan of novels) I immediately looked for knitting books to download. How to Knitting for Beginners: Using the Continental Method was too hard to resist. What a delight, for Lucy has provided excellent photographs and instructions.I was able to see where I was going wrong- without a magnifying glass. I now know how to do the Continental Method and I can't think of higher praise for a How-To book, except a competent bibliography. Here too, Lucy excels. Knitting is one of the few creative endeavors I can have on board. Yarn tucks in nice and it does not weigh much. Knitting books, however, are problematic. I had to *carefully* (and painfully) choose a few out of my well loved collection.Lucy's bibliography contains all I chose and the many I had to leave behind. Her selections are comprehensive and well known by any knitter who knows her (or his) stuff. Thank-you Lucy for giving an excellent start to a dying Art and for providing a means, with your links and bibliography, for all to *continue* learning and loving to knit. My only complaint, and I am not sure this qualifies as a complaint, was the prevalence of very wintry wool projects. We in the south, who love to knit, have need of lighter projects, especially with plant fibers...perhaps a sequel?
The Continental method is a fast, charming, multi-functional method of knitting and is user friendly on the wrists, your fingers do all the walking. I highly recommend this method and I highly recommend this book.

Hooray! Nice clear instructions!

With so many knitting books available, it's nice to find one that's not full of fluff. This author has accurately identified her readers and communicates with them in a direct but friendly manner. Clear and plentiful instructional photos, cool patterns, and plenty of extra information and sources. What a bonus to have it available electronically!

Wonderful book for a beginner

I've never knit before and learning from a book was a less than ideal format for me -- or so I thought. DeFranco gives very clear written instructions, has photographs that help explain, and she builds her lessons on previously learned skills. In addition, the Kindle version photos are in color! This was a big help for me. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn how to knit holding the yarn the continental way.
