After running a Detroit grocery store at 14 and a high school night club at 17, Warren Rovetch found his way to Europe as a delegate to the 1946 World Student Congress in Prague. Tales included interviewing an archbishop in his jail cell; asking Tito unscripted questions; escaping Yugoslavia out a train window in Ljubljana; refusing a request from the general’s mistress and posing as an ASPCA foreign correspondent in Trieste; living with El Greco; tossing a vodka-laden Russian ambassador in the air; mastering teatime on a British auto assembly line; and taking an unorthodox route to Oxford. With his trademark wit and astute observation, Rovetch illuminates the post-war world and shows what can happen when you approach life asking, “Why not?” Rovetch also provides illuminating background including the liberation of Paris, Churchill’s many facets, the Truman Doctrine, and the birth of Israel.

About the Author
Born in Detroit in 1926, Warren Rovetch completed his undergraduate studies at Wayne University in Detroit, and graduate studies at Oxford (Balliol College), where he was a Fulbright Scholar, receiving his MPhil in economics in 1951. Rovetch has been a government economist, an industrial engineer, a regional director for the Foreign Policy Association, and a consultant to school systems, colleges and universities, and state governments. Robert E. McNair, governor of South Carolina, said of Rovetch, “He was one of the most brilliant planners and programming-type people that I’ve ever known.” Rovetch’s Creaky Traveler books were featured on NPR (Morning Edition), touted for their “insight, charm, and vibrant impressions.” (Midwest Book Review), and praised for “extraordinary accounts, vivid descriptions, and discerning insights,” by Jimmy Deenihan, Irish Minister of Arts and Heritage.

Fascinating peek into post-WWII social change

"At age 14, 1941 was when I started being myself - whole and confident." So begins Warren Rovetch's fascinating memoir which examines a decade of intense world social change from the lens of one who played a part in it.
Rovetch educates and entertains with tales of how he went from running the family grocery store in Detroit to making his own way through postwar Europe as a representative of the World Student Congress and later as a journalist. Rovetch provides the reader with just the right amount of historical background in which to set each post-war scene, much of which might otherwise be unfamiliar to even devoted students of European history, including a meeting with political prisoner Archbishop Stepinac in his jail cell in Zagreb, and a visit to a Displaced Person camp for Jews in Leuca, Italy.
Rovetch's uncanny ability to be in the most interesting places at just the right time leads to fabulous encounters with Russian Ambassadors, General Tito, entrancing décolletage, and British lords (with or without their trousers.) His candid line of questioning to Tito gets him kicked out of Yugoslavia. His refusal to tolerate anti-semitism from British landed gentry leads to his removal from the US Information Agency's 'specialist speaker list'. But ultimately, his unerring curiosity and integrity lead this intelligent extrovert and bon vivant to receive one of the first Fulbright scholarships to Oxford. He uses the opportunity to study a subject which perplexes the blue bloods but is near and dear to his heart: wages and trade unionism in auto industries on both sides of the pond.

How to Live a Life Worth Writing About

Everyone has a story, and some of their stories are worth sharing with the world; Warren Rovetch's is definitely in this category.
In a highly readable, straightforward style, Rovetch writes of episodes that are side-splittingly funny: his experiences exploring Detroit on school days; operating a night club at Central High School in Detroit; becoming a foreign correspondent for the ASPCA; and bone-chillingly serious, from his (future) wife's experience enduring the Blitz in London to his own encounter with an anti-Semitic Peer-of-the-Realm host.
Rovetch managed to insinuate himself into some of the most intriguing situations imaginable at that point in world history by his attitude of "Why not?" at every opportunity. As underpinnings, addenda are inserted in the appropriate places to give the historical background--and the humorous background--of the events as they unfold.
A part of history that happened when I was too young to remember it was brought to life for me; I am sharing Tales of a Footloose American with my grandchildren to make it more real for them as well as to inspire them to create lives for themselves that will be worth writing about. It is also a great choice for book groups; the twelve members of mine were unanimous in their enthusiastic praise for it.
Above all, this is a story about a young man in charge of his life, with the courage to determine his own destiny.
Some memoirs are inspiring, some are vastly entertaining, and some reveal the character and intelligence of the author without being self-aggrandizing; this book is all three.
