Interesting concept, not well developed

I'm a long time alt history fan, and this particular alternate has had very little attention by any writers. BUT: This is not a ten dollar book, it should be in the .99 cents department. A new author, unskilled in the craft, who's errors are so frequent, and often so silly that they disrupt the flow of the story for laughing in disbelief time. He has favorite phrases that keep popping up, usually out of context, that simply drive the reader to distraction. "All-to-typical" is one, usually used to describe the stiff armed salute. People "quip" when deadly serious, all over the book. Ole', or sometimes Ol, Fred, Bill, Hitler, FDR etc...... Endless, endless narrative paragraphs with little dialogue between major players. One bit of sillyness is when Yammamoto exits his plane and the honor guard shouts "bonzi, bonzi" and he is somewhat annoyed by the "jester". Another is even funnier, as Adolph Hitler ends a harrangue of his staff by shouting Heil Hitler!. And his staff shouts it right back at him. Even your and you're appear interchangeable in this endless book. Another funny error is the description of an opinion being "outside his prevue, spelled that way,,, when he intended to say purview. Another time a GI is bayonetted by a Japanese soldier and "slipped into perpetuity" leaving one to wonder if the author means life after death, or that the unfortunate soldier is going to die over and over and over. Another is the used of collaborated instead of Corroborated.

Still another is that after the death of FDR our hero gets a box of reel-to-reel recording tapes of almost all FDR's presidential phone conversations from "all these years" in office. That's 1932 to his death. Recording tape was a WWII invention and FDR could hardly have used then from 1932 to the mid 40's.

The bomb. Both sides are trying to get there first. OK, normal Alt Hist, and even normal reality. But at one point the president and his staff are made aware of the dangers of "EMT", knocking out electrical contact with them, those and everybody else. NOBODY knew about that effect at the time, they didn't even understand the concept of long term radioactivity prior to dropping bombs on Japan. And if Slizard did at least suspect it he did not use the letters EMT.

The concept was a good one, the writer isn't. It's another object lession in the value of proof readers. I'm not one, but I worked with several of them on and off over many years, and I know what they are capable of. Even employing a proof reader for two or three hours would have greatly improved this book.

Good Read.

This is an exciting book that I found hard to put down. There are a few historical inaccuracies ("VMF" does not stand for "Volunteer Marine Flyers", General Groves' name is misspelled, and the U-234 sub carried uranium oxide, not processed uranium 235).

That said, it is a fun book and well worth the price and read time.

This is a good story but suffers from numerous typos and technical inaccuracies. The final editing seems amateurish and careless. These prove to be a major distraction from enjoying an otherwise good tale.

I absolutely love it when real life imitates science fiction.  I want you to get a load of this doozy of a mindbender.

A handful of theoretical physicists are examining the bloodiest bleeding edges of reality. They are cautiously contemplating what some are already calling the Proposed Fifth Law of Thermodynamics.  There currently are only four laws.  If the Fifth holds, it will be a real game changer for the 'who's first, chicken or egg' debates, because the answer just might be that organic life was the Johnny come lately.

The Fifth Law proposes the existence throughout the universe of complex automatons.  It hypothesizes that these alien machines are not only self-constructed but infinitely intricate--therefore sentient.

Whether the Fifth ends up in anathema's scrapheap or as a new frontier in cosmology, it's great fodder for my science fiction.

While I think part of the story were over the top, what I appreciated most about this story was its interesting meshing of evolutionary theory and intelligent design theory. Worth reading.

Comically Endearing

Having been a long time e-friend/blog reader of Nathan Timmel and having had the opportunity to see him perform a few years ago, I was ecstatic to see a book released! I was not disappointed as his writing is genuine, authentic, unabashedly honest and replete with engaging imagery.

Nathan delivers life's unpleasant periods in a palatable read as he leads you on his journey through childhood development, political unrest, crackpot adolescence, comedy, relationships... and war... while leaving you feeling a bit more appreciative of the experiences that shape us and what we've learned from them rather than being defined by them.

When Nathan writes, you rarely know what to expect as mid-serious anecdote, he stealth-swipes you an interjection sure to well a few tears of laughter. His stories are easy to relate to and at times, invoke a bit of your own nostalgia.

It was definitely worth my first Nook purchase, though I foresee buying the paperback, too. It is, without question, something I would read more than just once.

One of the most entertaining books I've read in while

This book has a little of everything; it's witty and funny, but also heartbreaking, humbling, and at times infuriating. Written by a comedian, but this is not a book that's just out for cheap laughs. The author is a natural-born storyteller, and I found myself experiencing his emotions as he re-told his life story--every chapter, he drew me in by laying everything out on the line... every dirty detail and intimate thought out in the open. From his (sometimes painful) past experiences, I see why he seeks the attention that being a comedian provides--and I think many can relate.

While it definitely has sections that will make you laugh and witty commentary throughout (such as taking his daily dump in the bushes as a kid or fending off a stalker who just wants to be loved), I felt a range of emotions that many authors don't quite draw out of me. I sympathized with his parents' messy and drawn-out divorce, related with his confusing teenage years, and wanted to strangle the girl who strung him along and broke his heart (and also wanted to slap some sense into him).

It was frustrating to hear an inside account of what it takes to succeed in the unfair, cut-throat world of stand-up comedy--a business that often overlooks talent only to reward hacks and cheap gimmicks. The tales of his trips to entertain the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan were both eye-opening and humbling. No matter your political leanings, he pays the utmost respect to those fighting for our country, and in the process, humbles those of us who do not have the courage or ambition to do so ourselves.

Absolute must read.

I found Nathan Timmel through his stand up comedy. Upon hearing about the fact he had a book available, I decided to check it out and couldn't have been happier doing so.

This is a journey through his life told by someone who truly knows how to tell stories. While he is a comedian, this isn't a book that is focused on just getting laughs. It is a genuinely interesting story of someone and their progress through life. The story can go from laughing out loud to where you think you might want to wipe a tear away.

I highly recommend this book and know you'll love it also.

Fantastic Ashtanga Yoga Manual

I purchased "Ashtanga Yoga: Primary and Intermediate Series" by Caroline Klebl recently and I simply love this book. It gives very detailed information on how to move in and out of every single asana of the Ashtanga Yoga series. For me, it became very important in order to be able to deepen my practice and breath-work and in general, get a detailed view Ashtanga Yoga asanas. Furthermore, this book became very important to me as a yoga teacher and I was able to learn and study each posture in detail and then teach with more confidence and knowledge in my classes.
Caroline Klebl is a very talented and gifted yogi and I admire and respect her for her knowledge and passion about Ashtanga Yoga. Caroline and her book have influenced my yoga practice immensely and I would recommend this book to everyone who is interested in Ashtanga Yoga and wants to deepen their own practice. In combination with her Yoga DVD this book helped me tremendously.

Great Book by an even greater Ashtanga Practitioner

Caroline Klebl has one of the most beautiful practices I have ever seen. Her experience in Ashtanga yoga is amazing and this resource she has developed is a testament to her desire to spread the healing and developmental properties Ashtanga Yoga is known for. I have attended teacher trainings with Caroline and enjoyed them immensely. I highly recommend this book.

Amazing Book GREAT reference book for Ashtanga yoga instructors

I purchased this book last year and have used it many times as a resource! I am an Ashtanga Yoga Instructor myself. I have recommended it to my students. It is laid out perfectly and Caroline is a beautiful Ashtanga model! All asanas are in perfect form. I would recommend this book to anyone who practices Ashtanga yoga. Even for those who are just interested in any type of yoga. Great resource! Buy it!!

Just get it.

Why are you still here, after all these years sitting on your keester and complaining, when you could be walking around with that wide smile on your face? Because you haven't read est: Playing the Game a New Way, (Erhard Seminar Training) that's why. Dig it. You want to win. You want to move on. You want to get and be real, but, well you got to answer the cell phone and your email hasn't completely downloaded and...Well...and.... Frederick got it for you and laid it out in this book. All you have to do is DECIDE if you really want it, if you really want your life to work. A friend of mine in psych care told me back in '78 when she loaned me this book: "It, like growing up and getting real, ain't for the faint of heart". As the reader, you get from this book an opportunity, a gift, really, of time to read and examine what is going on with you, right here and right now. All that is IS here and now. Every Buddhist master and sage knows that, but it takes them longer.

Yes, I did go through the EST training, in Denver, in 1979, with about 280 other people, and I did GET IT, about 6:30 in the morning driving back to Cheyenne on my way to work with the big bright full moon on my left just above the line of mountain tops along the pink and white-topped sparkle from the Rockies as the sun was coming up. EST does work. I laughed my head off all the way and wondered why I had put myself through such needless "stuff" (euphemism) all those years--decades. This book DOES WORK. Reading it is the closest I have ever come to re-experiencing some of the residual effect of the Training. Everyone I have loaned it to tell me the same thing: no big deal, it works.

I am an EST grad from the 70s. I had this book years ago and in moving ect it got away from me .I was so thrilled to find it again .yes EST was a life changer and this book is like being in THE ROOM again .I have told others to read it and it brings a wonderful experience back into my life.!

Well worth a read

Though nothing is a substitute for actually going through The Landmark Forum, Carl Frederick's book is well worth a read. For those of us who attended The Landmark Forum this book is a good summary of the key points. The use of "real world" examples in the book is very helpful and the author clearly has a passion for wanting to see everyone "win the games" they set up for themselves.

I guarantee that each time you read this book, different things will jump out at you and as time goes on, more and more of the concepts will sink in.

G.O.R.E Score Cravings!! Vol.2

I was lucky enough to meet Tony Schaab at HorrorHound in Indy this past March. Let me tell you that it was a great experience! I am very happy to have met him and also happy that I picked up both volumes of G.O.R.E Score! I was lucky enough to SCORE a copy of vol.2 with the variant cover. It's looking as if I'm going to have to pick up this copy as well (for the collection). These books are great and they are filled with excellent reviews and insight. Tony and I also discussed the days of Chas Balun and his books; well let me tell you that Tony his well on his way to being this generations horror publication guru!

If you like zombies and you like horror you need these books!!

Another great collection!

Tony has released another great zombie review book to let we zombie fans sink our teeth into. And it's awesome!

If you're a zombie fan and like Volume 1, then definitely don't miss out. Great addition to the first volume.

And if you're a Tony Schaab fan, don't miss out on his "Geekfight" that went down on May 20th on the Better Geek Than Never website, where he took on the topic "Best Zombie Attack Ever" (in a movie), proving again that Tony knows his stuff :)

Tony has released another great movie review book to allow all zombie fans sink their rotten nasty teeth into. /wink -- And it's awesome! (did you expect any less?)

If you *are* a zombie fan and like Volume 1, then definitely don't miss out. Great addition to the first volume and he has a really nice range of zombie media that he's gone to, to review for everyone. Some things you'll recognize, but somethings you won't- which might give you some ideas what to put on your "to experience" list.

Tony knows his stuff- and he continues to prove he's the King of all Zombie related paraphernalia.

About the Author
REX FORTUNE, a father, husband and educator in Sacramento, California is an inspiring educational reform advocate for closing the achievement gap. Fortune is chairman of the board and director of research and evaluation at Fortune School of Education (FSE) in Sacramento.

He earned a BS at North Carolina A&T State University, an MA at UC Berkeley, and his doctorate in education from Stanford University. His recent work in California educational reform includes supporting the Sacramento County Board of Education's authorization of five K-8 charter schools. Fortune also serves as president of the board for Pacific Charter Institute, which has a charter school in Sacramento County and another in San Joaquin County.

In 2002, Fortune co-authored LEADERSHIP ON PURPOSE: Promising Practices for African American and Hispanic Students, published by Corwin Press. BRIDGING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP reflects Fortune's unique ability to assess careful research, make keen observations, and establish a vision that merits implementation. Education has become the civil rights issue of the 21st century. With public awareness around the issue growing daily, Dr. Fortune's book is an excellent compliment to stakeholder efforts in further spreading awareness and, more importantly, identifying real solutions for underperforming students. While Dr. Fortune is himself impressively credentialed and experienced in the world of education, it is his display of diligence and thorough research in the book that truly fortifies his words as persuasive guidance for getting done what we so desperately need: a holistic, complete approach to educating children that have already been failed by the system.

Critics of education reform will say what they will about the term "achievement gap" and how it perpetuates an inauthentic, subjective benchmark of success for struggling students--the fact of the matter is this: regardless of how you label the situation, chronically underperforming children just need to learn better than they are now. Dr. Fortune's book shows educators and parents how schools have done that in this modern era of education. I encourage anyone to purchase this book. The information it presents needs to be known in every home.

A must read for every parent

I am a former California public school teacher. I taught at a low-income school in a neighborhood that is infested with drugs, gangs, and prostitution. No one expects our students to perform, but long story short, a small middle school in the "'hood" now has an API of 964 and a National Blue Ribbon. How? Many of our parents are featured in Dr. Fortune's DVD, Bridging the Achievement Gap: What Successful Educators and Parents Do, where they share what it took for THEM to do in order for their kids to perform.

In my experience, it's high expectations that spark the fire, and follow-through that yields results. Many parents, having been failed by our public schools system themselves (on any level), are not equip with the necessary skills to help their children realize their academic goals.

Dr. Rex Fortune truly is an icon educator - a living legend with so much first-hand history of public education in California. Dr. Fortune has been an educator (in many different capacities) for longer than I've been alive!!
I appreciate his ability to recognize and understand others' diverse backgrounds and histories.

There are many people who claim to be "urban education experts", yet these people were never "urban" students themselves, nor have they been parents of "urban" students.

There is an academic achievement (or "access") gap because there is a disconnect that persists throughout the education field. We don't like to acknowledge, let alone talk about race, cultural differences, and what typically happens in different homes (for real, for real). Dr. Fortune crosses lines and shares a number of different scenarios.

In addition to ensuring the educating of his own children, Dr. Fortune has impacted 100s of 1000s of lives over the decades. Lucky for us, he decided to put the recipe on paper (and DVD!!)

Who doesn't want the best for their child? Some of us don't have all of the skills and resources necessary to provide the best. So? Make yourself better for your student by reading this book (or watching the DVD ;). The accompanying DVD is a very quick & helpful overview of the text.

The habits that you instill in your student are for LIFE, not just the next grade level.

Tried and Tested Methods of Bridging the Achievement Educational Gap

Studies have shown that with the proper methods in place, continual practice and adequate support any student can learn and excel. Despite the statistics, minority students are excelling well above the Achievement Performance Index (API) requirement. How are they doing this is by the dedication of a collective unit: student, parent, teachers, educators, leaders and the school all with the same goals in mind to "bridge the achievement gap."

Bridging the Achievement Gap: What Successful Educators and Parents Do by Rex Fortune is a tried and tested account of the methods and processes that must be in place to show how minority students can progress. Mr. Fortune did some extensive research and interviews to display that minority students can learn and excel with back to basics, innovative and grassroots methods.

In his book he interviews numerous schools educators, leaders and teachers to get an upfront account of their success stories from paying teacher salaries above $44,000 per year and reducing class sizes to extending education and teaching student hours. These efforts have not only caused the students to exceed the statewide API but have allowed them to rank above the statewide API for several consecutive years. For those visual learners he has created a supplemental DVD "Parenting Practices: How Successful Parents Bridge The Achievement Gap" that provides similar information along with parent interviews.

This book is highly recommended.
