About the Author
Allan Leverone is a three-time Derringer Award finalist for excellence in short mystery fiction, as well as a 2011 Pushcart Prize nominee for his dark short story, “Dance Hall Drug.” His short fiction has been featured in Needle: A Magazine of Noir, A Twist of Noir, Shroud Magazine, Dark Valentine and many other print and online magazines. Definitely pick up this book!

I had the good fortune of reading this book while my band was on tour. From the first page, Leverone kicks down the doors with a tense, tightly plotted thriller that will keep you turning pages into the night. Just when you think a hostage situation couldn't get any more tense, bam, the situation escalates. Grab this book and get ready for a wild ride.

Couuld have been good, but very difficult to wade through

The author has come up with an unusual and provocative plot, quite exciting. He has also contrived some interesting characters. The bad guy is really, really bad., and the hero is a good and unassuming guy who reacted properly when nobody else would. It is difficult to wait for developments as the plot progress very slowly .

That said, I sadly have to admit that this is one of the most aggravating and boring book I have ever read. One has to plow through dozens of pages of the characters' thoughts before the plot advances an iota.

He is not a bad writer, but the book is full of cliches (the people suffering adrenaline rushes are legion), and the outcome is predictable. The most aggravating thing is having each of his characters ruminate endlessly in stream of consciousness fashion about their situation in chapter after chapter.

I never had to skip through so many pages to find where the plot even advances a tiny bit. This goes on endlessly throughout the book, until near the end when he actually seems to advance the plot without having each character muse to themselves forever.

He devotes entire chapters to characters' dreams, without much,, if any, relevance to the plot.

Violating the rules of English, he does not seem to understand that each bit of dialog is supposed to be written in separate paragraphs. Instead bits of dialog are buried deep in multi-page long paragraphs. Thus, in paging through the dross, I had to be on the lookout for those little quotation marks buried in all the trivial thinking of a character, to find anything that was happening.

The facts I mentioned in the first paragraph would make the book deserve a four-star rating had he only written a tome without all those pages of useless pondering of the characters. If all this were removed, it would be a good short story, or even a novella. Overall, I am very sorry to have to rate this only two stars. I came close to three, but could not do it.

Most unfortunate, as there is a good story buried in there somewhere.

ROCKIN' THRILLER!!!

Awesome read! I jumped at the chance to read this because one of my favorite recent authors, Vin Zandri, had written an excellent review for it. As usual, Vin nailed it!! This book was nonstop action with startline twists and just a terrifying storyline! LOVED IT!!

Required reading for any parent of a high school kid

College Bound and Gagged is a great collection of tips and wisdom to equip any adult who lives with a teenager going through what's known as "the college process." Clearly, Nancy has terrific insight into the nature of the beast--er, I mean, teenager, and her candid observations and suggestions will help many a parent or guardian transform what might be stressful into something fun. Read the book in any order you like; its mosaic structure lends itself well to the quick flashes of help she consistently offers. A great read! ( I recommended it to a new client of mine today.)

This wonderful book is available in small and coffee table size. The coffee table size has more images, a dust cover, and is absolutely beautiful. For those who love good photography, both versions offer moving and artistically compelling interpretations of Biblical excerpts, rendered with sepia toned visual textures - exceedingly well done.
Those who are not photographers will still find the book rewarding as the visual interpretations of Jesus interacting with people in present day clothing drive home the point that The Lord's Message is just as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago.
The author and photographer, a fashion photographer of 30 years, felt a calling to produce this book and it's immediately apparent that his creativity was driven by a divine source, as he readily admits.
This book in a must for those who love good photography and seek a relevance to Jesus through beautiful visualization and thought provoking text. In keeping with her largely unrecognized tradition of charity work, the Duchess took it upon herself to study the inner workings – and intrigues - of a modern hospital. She took a keen interest in Silvin who would become her protégée and certainly the object of her final, well thought out public battle. Noblesse Oblige’s readers are also exposed to a researched history of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor beginning with their early lives and which follows them to their deaths. The book contains newly revealed details of the Duke’s peaceful demise, in May of 1972, when he serenely passed away in his Paris home, surrounded by his completely devoted Duchess, competent nurses, favorite Pug, Black Diamond, and treasured items. Sadly, and in stark contrast, Silvin describes the Duchess’ decade-long illness during which, in an undiagnosed form of dementia, she gradually lost control of her arms and legs, was inhumanely kept alive for six years, slowly isolated from friends, stripped of her dignity and even her nurturing child-substitutes – her dogs. The book both begins and ends with vivid and detailed descriptions of the hospital Board of Governor’s meetings where a still keen-minded Duchess brilliantly strategizes to save the author from being terminated. In her own words, quoted in the book’s first chapter (“God knows I can appreciate being the victim of a plot!”) she embarks on her last quest for what she thought was justice. As the story reaches its climax and wearing her chalcedony sapphire jewelry, which she claimed “has mystical powers to assist us” she uses the tragic death of Aristotle Onassis to further her agenda while quoting the motto of the highly revered British “Most Noble Order of the Garter” Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame on those with evil thoughts.) Noblesse Oblige (another one of the Duchess’ favorite expressions) contains amusing accounts of famous Parisian physicians, high-level French politicians, international socialites and even a vulgar and notorious American Congressman. Because of the book’s famous characters and venues, some names and facts have been altered. Noblesse Oblige is the author’s third book following I Survived Swiss Boarding Schools and Walking the Rainbow, an Arc to Triumph.

Fiction barely disguised as fact- and he admits it!

I would have loved this book had it delivered what the title had promised- a personal memoir by an acquaintance of the Duchess of WIndsor, however a more aptly named titled would have been 'Workplace Politics in an Obscure Hospital in France in the 1970's'! for that's really all it delivered. Rene Silvin was on the board of The American Hospital in Paris as was The Duchess, however more than three quarters of the book is spent describing the petty hostilities and politics of the said hospital and neglecting to mention a single word about the Duchess. Other chapters are devoted to rehashing the history of the Windsors, most of which is public knowledge in any case, none of which is new, and all of which is long winded and yawn- worthy.

The extent to which new information and personal anecdotes are revealed can be filtered down to a handful of pages, if in fact it is genuine at all! I was shocked at reading a disclosure at the front of the book in fine print (albeit after finishing the book) stating 'this book is based on some true events, however has been fictionalized and all persons appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real people, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.' ALL PERSONS APPEARING IN THIS WORK ARE FICTITIOUS! How bizarre! One wonders if it should be read at all. You will be sorely disappointed if you read this disclosure after you trudge through the book!

The authors name dropping about the society matrons and dignitries he meets whilst in Paris is crass and nauseating as is his barely veiled self agrandising. Silvin claims his parents were friends of the Windsors and he a confidante of The Duchess, which may be so, yet I am curious as to why a personal memoir requires a hefty bibliography? Does one need to check the details of ones own life? Also never once is their a photo of the author or his parents with either Duke or Duchess.

Silvin is by no means a born author though he pretends to be, frequently he breaks off on long tangents to report irrelevant anecdotes that seem only to appease himself. The book is cheaply self published and therefore in need of a good editor who no doubt would cull at least three quarters. The numerous photographs appear distorted, grainy and look like bad photocopies, none of which are new. Silvin seems to assume the average reader daft, one notable quote; '...the Queen's mother, also called Elizabeth...'this strikes me as quite insulting, The Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth, consort of George VI, anyone picking up a book promising to deliver juicy gossip about the Duchess of Windsor, or indeed anyone of a certain age surely is familiar with the first name of the revered Queen Mother, it's akin to saying; ' J.F.K.'s wife, whose name was Jackie.' It's this constant ignorant assumption that becomes very tiresome after a while. Anyone who gives this book a 5 star rating is extremely naïve and has obviously never read any other book about the Windsors. Forgive me for having gone on for so long but I feel there is much at fault in this book.

Did I read the same book?

I can not help but wonder if I read the same book that some others (those specifically who think it is a masterpiece) read. This book shows no verifiable proof that the author really knew much about the Duchess of Windsor - he says that his parents were great friends of the Duke and Duchess but once again there is no proof and certainly no pictures. Pictures are worth a thousand words but in this case the words are not worth it. Wish I could get my money back as it wasn't worth either the effort to read or the money to buy it.

A bit of fluff

If you are a serious student of the period and the history of the Duke and Duchess's lives, pass this one up. There are several in depth scholarly books far better than this one. A much better accounting of the Duchess's last years is The Last of the Duchess by Caroline Blackwood. If you are looking for light anectodal entertainment this book is an easy quick read. I passed over the autobiographical sections the author inserted about himself and just read the parts pertaining to the Duchess. That is, after all, why I took a chance on this book in the first place. It is illustrated, which is a plus, but nothing I hadn't seen before.

About the Author
Lanny Cotler was born on the Fourth of July. He was an Eagle Scout, arrested in the Free Speech Movement, a Vietnam vet (USAID/CORDS) and taught Classics at St. Johns College, NM. He lived in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for two prime years, then spent an energetic decade in Hollywood writing and directing feature films ("The Earthling" and "Heartwood"). He adapted for the screen both Frank Waters' novel, "The Man Who Killed the Deer", and Carl Hammerschlag's "The Dancing Healers". Both of these projects brought him into contact with the people and culture of the Pueblo nation. He is an activist member of the Grange Movement and lives in Mendocino County, California.

In the Shadow of Two Holocausts

What a rich, multicultural feast, liberally sprinkled with colorful characters worth caring about -- a Jewish doctor who passes up a cushy job at a San Francisco hospital to care for Native Americans on a Pueblo Indian reservation in New Mexico; a young woman who foregoes a fellowship opportunity at Cambridge to study language and herbal science under the tutelage of an elderly medicine woman; a wise old grandfather who struggles with a conflict between modern medicine and the ancient healing rites of his tribe. All this and more is played out in a riveting story that takes the reader from New York to Tel Aviv to Santa Fe and echoes memories of Native American genocide and the Jewish Holocaust against a backdrop of New Mexico flora and fauna, generational struggles on a Pueblo reservation and a pivotal conflict regarding a decision to forfeit secred tribal land to create a disposal site for nuclear waste.

In "In the Beginning the Dance" author Lanny Cotler has created a satisfying stew that nourishes the reader's appetite for eye-opening revelations about two separate but strangely similar 21st Century cultures and the human history which spawned them. He has crafted a complex and compelling adventure that plays out on a mystical canvas well worth exploring.

The Healing Garden of Dance

Lanny Cotler is a magnificent writer, and "In The Beginning The Dance" is a beautiful, well-told story filled with powerful images, well-developed characters, absorbing conflicts, a compelling love story and many delightful surprises. It is extremely entertaining and yet there are many valuable lessons to be learned here concerning the Jewish and Native American experience, modern medical cures vs. traditional healing, rebellious children, and a government that covets sacred Native American lands to bury its most dangerous mistakes.
I highly recommend it. I'm about to read it again.

Hi Lanny, I am Carl's spiritual sister and wanted to tell you that I loved your book "In the Beginning the Dance." Each character was rich with emotion and authentic reverence to the culture, ceremonies, and struggles. I could feel Carl's energy and life experiences throughout, enriched by your heartfelt soul and mellifluous storytelling skills. Let's envision it as a film to be seen on the big screen. I did so when I first read his original manuscript of "Dancing Healers."

An insightful read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fascinating to see the thoughts and meanings embedded into the very structure of 1 Nephi. They were things which I surely never would have recognized without someone pointing them out to me. Perhaps what I enjoyed the most was the fact that the author didn't point these things out to try and impress anyone. Rather, his every effort was to reinforce the message of the prophets about the divinity and message of Jesus Christ.

This book goes beyond the story of 1 Nephi. The author also includes insights into many of the stories of the Old Testament patriarchs and prophets whose lives were often patterns of Christ's life; what He would go through and how He feels about us. Many of those stories were referenced by the prophets of the New Testament to show that Jesus is the Christ. I now view those stories of old with new eyes and a deeper appreciation.

Marcus M. Ladd shows great skill and understanding in viewing the scriptures with his experiment upon the word referred to by Alma in the Book of Mormon below quoted:

But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, . . . . Alma 32:27

AND Marcus has shown himself approved by expertly handling the ancient "learning of the Jews" mentioned by Nephi of the Book of Mormon and Paul of the New Testament again quoted below:

Best Book on Helicopter operations in Vietnam I have ever read

This is a great book, a very personal story, and yet much more than one man's journey through two tours of Vietnam with "The Cav".

"Just Let Me Walk Away" must be the overriding thought of every helicopter pilot who ever faced a forced landing. It is also the best book on helicopter operations in Vietnam I have ever read.

While he was serving with the 101st Airborne, Ray Clark volunteered for helicopter flight school, and shortly after was on his way to Vietnam. Five forced landings, a Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars, an Air Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, and two tours later, he survived to tell the tale.

From the first tour as a new pilot, to command of a company on the second tour, this humble story is a non stop read and mixes Rays personal journey with vivid descriptions of helicopter operations with The Cav. There are moments of stark terror, triumph, unbelievable flying, and yet hilarity and relief.

Descriptions of the technicalities of flying are abundant, yet written around the mission in a way that has you in the helicopter with the crew.

After his fifth forced landing, Ray asked his crew chief: "Chief, what do the grunts think of me as a pilot?". The Chief replied: "well sir, way it is, `bout half of them won't fly with you, because something is always happening; the other half won't fly with anyone else, because you always get `em home".

That Ray Clark got home at all is a testament to his flying.

"Just Let Me Walk Away" is a remarkable testament to an incredible journey.

BTW I know Ray Clark personally. It had been my pleasure to meet Ray at a stock market seminar some years back. We quickly became friends, and over a period of time I learned of just a few of the stories that you will read in "Just Let Me Walk Away".

Ray Clark is a very humble guy, and you would never know what he had been through if you just stood and talked with him.

His humility is part of what makes him a great guy, and this book such an incredible story.

Riveting book

This is the best book I have read about the Vietnam War written from the perspective of a helicopter pilot. It is a riveting read: once I started, I found it difficult to put the book down. The stories are memorable. Several of them had my heart pounding as I read them. I can see this book serving as the basis for a documentary or a movie. Whether that happens is another matter, but it would make for interesting viewing.

I appreciate that Capt. Clark made the book readable by someone who is not a "military person". Certainly he discusses technical aspects of war, but he does so in a way which isn't off-putting, and it made me appreciate what soldiers do and endure. Not all casualties occur on the field of battle, something I, as a civilian, often overlook.

The book is well-written, flowing from one story to another, from one chapter to another. It is also perfectly edited, something which I find increasingly uncommon. I liked that pictures are placed throughout the book, adding a nice, occasional break, instead of placing them in the middle, or at the end, of the book. The typeface used is also nice: I had less eye strain even though I read for long periods of time. The maps are quite helpful, and I like that they are large and legible. There is also a nice glossary at the end. Kudos to Capt. Clark and his editor for understanding the reader and paying attention to the little details, the little things too-often overlooked.

I am buying several copies to give to veterans and current members of the military. This book is a testament to the dedication of all who serve to protect and defend the U.S.

I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.

Wow!

I was hooked from the prologue. I could not put this book down. It tells it like it was, and I loved the contrasts. Serious as needed, stress as expected, patriotism all over it, plus heartaches and humor all mixed well into a great story. The well illustrated black & white photos along the way add to it's authenticity. This shows the actual Huey crash photos that are rare to see from the 60's. I had to go back and reread a few favorite chapters... This one got me a few times.. POWERFUL and very well done!
This one is a keeper.
Thank you Ray Clark for putting this out there. You are one incredible pilot, and excellent story teller.

Blue Saga just keeps getting better and better!

A little over a year ago I reviewed a book called Breathless by Scott Prussing and I was blown away. A year, and two books later, he's given us the 3rd release in the Blue Fire saga, Helpless, and it had me just as captivated as the first two. Leesa and Rave are back along with Cali, Stefan, Dominic and one of my favorites, Max. As a bonus we also get vengeful zombie dogs, dark wizards, and supped up serial killer vamps. As always, Prussing's characters demand your full attention with their dynamic personalities. Each and every character adds so much to the story and touches you on an emotional level that only a great author can achieve. It's hard to say too much about Helpless without giving too many spoilers so I won't get too detailed about the story. For those that haven't read the first two books, don't try to read Helpless. It would still be a good book, but you wouldn't get nearly the same satisfaction from it as you would if you read Breathless and Deathless first.
For those who have read Breathless and Deathless, you don't want to miss this book. You know those dreams Leesa was having? Well they are getting even more detailed and are changing. Prussing throws us all for a loop when we get to see the Vampires and Volkaanes actually working together! I for one was very happy to see more of Rave, Stefan, and Leesa all together again.

I really can't say enough about the progression of this entire series. Each book is better than the last and the story holds you enthralled until you can get your hand on the next installment! I anxiously await the 4th book, Fearless.

These books get better and better! I am always impatiently waiting for more to read! I have given a few of these to friends and customers and so far they have all loved them! The story line is becoming more and more intriguing!

loved loved loved as always. the characters came back hotter then ever. the love and story rocked. the twists were amazing. i cannot wait to read the next. amazing book by an amazing author!
