Barry M. Goldenberg is a Doctoral student in the History and Education program at Columbia University. Barry serves as a Graduate Research Fellow at the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) at Teachers College where he is currently the Project Director for Youth Historians in Harlem—a new research initiative that seeks to explore how innovative history experiences and public history can be used to both empower and improve the academic literacies of traditionally marginalized youth. His work has been featured in academic journals such as Urban Education and has presented at numerous national conferences in education. In addition, Barry has been featured on the Harlem World Radio Show and has spent time abroad volunteering in Cape Town, South Africa. Barry holds a B.A. in History (highest departmental honors), magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Will make you buy a night light

It was October and I was feeling itchy to read some horror, so I took a chance and bought Paul D. Dail's The Imaginings. (Of course, I didn't get around to reading it until after Christmas.) I was delighted to find that Dail's prose is clean, tight, and a pleasure to read. More importantly, he knows how to play on the reader's emotions. Three or four chapters in, I realized I should not be reading this book before bed. Or after dark. Or when I was going to be alone for a while. Particularly not on a windy day. I don't usually scare easily, but Dail makes you like his characters and then haunts them with such an insidious evil that you sweat right alongside them.

Like other horror novels I've read, The Imagining slows a bit in the middle, losing some tension, but it picks up again for the final third of the book, giving me a wild ride on a rather turbulent (literally) plane ride home from my Christmas vacation.

A dark tale of possession

First, an admission: I'm not coming at this book from the point of view of a complete stranger. Mr Dail is an occasional visitor to (and commenter on) my blog, and over the months we've struck up something of an online friendship. That said, I've tried as always not to let this stand in the way of an honest appraisal of the book.

This small caveat aside, here's my review of 'The Imaginings'.

'Never disregard your imaginings' - these words run through Dail's novel like a dark vein. When David Blithe finds this cryptic message scrawled on a piece of paper in his brother Peter's apartment shortly after his apparent suicide, he doubts Peter's sanity. In fact, as shortly becomes clear, Peter was the helpless victim of a very dark force indeed - and the unfortunate David will be next.

'Those forces roll across the land,' Dail writes, in a particularly chilling passage, 'and when they hit, there's nothing you can do but ride it out.'

In an echo of the unfairness of fate, the entity that has targeted David admits, 'You haven't really done anything wrong.' David cannot escape by repenting for past misdeeds or making amends (though it later transpires that the entity has a particular reason for choosing him); he is, to all intents and purposes, trapped. Interestingly, the theme of imprisonment, of one sort or another, runs through the novel: one character lives in an orphanage, and is locked in after dark; another works in a vast underground labyrinth, in which a series of locked doors lead into a succession of increasingly sinister and claustrophobic rooms.

This is a novel about demonic possession - not generally one of my favourite horror themes, but executed so well here that I was quickly drawn into the action, and kept there. Unlike other tales of possession, the demon does not restrict itself to one particular host, but can take possession of different bodies at will. This adds an additional layer of fear; how can you trust anyone, or ever feel safe, when anyone could at any moment become the conduit for a malign force? It also poses some interesting questions: is morality determined by our deeds, or by our souls? Is it possible for a soul to remain pure when the flesh becomes the instrument of evil?

This is a well-written, tightly plotted story: Dail's prose is economical yet evocative. The characters are drawn vividly and well, with a satisfying depth and complexity, and we are made to care about them; I was genuinely upset when a genial priest fell foul of the demon.

Reading other reviews of the novel, I noticed that several readers have made a slight criticism, namely that a critical scene at the climax of the novel is repeated from the points of view of two different characters. It's hard to say much about this without giving away certain elements of the plot, but it was felt that this slowed down the action. This is no doubt a matter of personal preference, but I didn't find that this troubled me at all; in fact, I actually found that it rounded the action out in quite a satisfying way. Whatever your own preferences, though, this is a minor point, and shouldn't distract anyone from Dail's achievement in taking a plot that could easily have become immensely convoluted and bringing it tightly, carefully, cleverly to its conclusion. The steady build-up of tension keeps you hooked, and while it's not a particularly short novel I got through it in a couple of sittings. Indeed, I almost arrived late for work one morning, when I made the mistake of reading it over breakfast. That's the mark of a good page-turner!

One hell of a ride through classic themes of good/evil and the battle each of us undergoes to support one and fight the other

So here we are, holiday week, Christmas is coming to my household, and what am I bringing you for Book Review Tuesday fare? Why, creepy, scary, horror of course! (teehee)

Actually, there's probably some interesting psychological analysis there - most people read horror for the same reason they read science fiction or fantasy/supernatural stuff: the escape. And what better time to escape than the holiday season? I don't know about you, but I'm beat - decorating, shopping, cards, gifts, parties are all great things, but the sheer volume sometimes overwhelms me. Especially since this year I'm doing it all while we are in the process of settling into New House (hooray for New House!)...

Eek, she said!

So a little vacation from reality isn't a bad thing just now. Although, quite honestly, I don't really want to vacation TO author Paul Dail's worlds so much as vacation THROUGH them... Because seriously, holy cow, I don't want to spend any more than reading-time in a world where pure evil runs rampant through the bodies of "regular" (well, sort of) people the way water runs rampantly downhill!

The Imaginings is a great example of the traditional horror story. It scares you from page one on, builds and releases and builds and releases the tension until you think you're going to explode, and then culminates in a grand "is it REALLY over" moment or two before the words run out... (and yes, I intentionally didn't say "before the end" - because in the manner of all great scary-story writers, this one leaves you wondering if the end is really upon you.

The story starts out with a suicide and things only get messier from there. In the wake of said suicide (his brother), David Blithe is trying to understand exactly what happened and what the rather cryptic last words about not disregarding your imaginings might mean. Well, let's just say that all too soon he finds out - and the manner in which he does is a unique mixture of Lovecraft and King that I found appalling and impossible to stop reading all at the same time. David is an entirely believable (and immensely likable and sympathetic) character, as is his unwitting counterpart (Antithesis? Nemesis? Victim? Ally? Friend? All of the above?) Jeannie, the girl who becomes integrally (and extraordinarily) entangled in David's mess after a spectacularly unexpected and violent interlude early on in the story.

The Imaginings explores classic themes of good and evil and the battle each of us undergoes to support the one and fight the other. There are plenty of psychological thrills and chills (the kind of horror I prefer because my own imaginings, driven by an author's words/images, are usually creepier/scarier to me than anything the author could have come up with on their own since my head knows what freaks me out the most) to accompany some truly graphic and disturbing physical ones (the kind of horror I do not prefer because it grosses me out but that I understand is often a necessary component of the psycho scary stuff).

The epic battle plays out in unique ways and the outcomes are satisfying while still leaving some wiggle room for your own mind to wonder what might happen next. Excellent read for any reader

`High School Dropout to Harvard' is an autobiography about a boy who was called dumb and was told to try harder in school without knowing he had a learning disability. The book goes through the author's struggles throughout school and adulthood, but outlines how successful one can be by just believing in one's self and never giving up. The author overcame many obstacles to learning by taking charge of his own life and making the most out of the talents he had, learning about himself and his limitations but successfully living the life he wanted to live.

John Rodrigues shares his life from childhood to Harvard and never gives up, even when he didn't know he had a learning disability until he was well into college. Mr. Rodrigues did an excellent job conveying his feelings of anxiety and frustration in school, the sullenness he felt waiting for his acceptance into Berkley ad Harvard, and the freedom he felt when he ran for the first time without the braces on his feet and when he packed up to leave to achieve his goals. I felt like I was traveling on the cruise ship with him and sat in on his Harvard interview. I had no choice but to cheer him on and as a parent, support the decisions he made even though they seemed outlandish. I wish my children were as motivated and driven and Mr. Rodrigues!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mr. Rodrigues' story. He told a wonderfully motivational story that would benefit anyone who reads it. Teens will learn that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible, whether they have a learning disability or not. Parents will learn to recognize signs that the traditional education system, which still exists today, might not be working for their children instead of assuming their children are dumb or lazy. Teachers will learn to pay more attention to the signs of learning disabilities like dyslexia and find ways to help their students adapt their learning based on how they learn instead of how they score on standardized tests. I was so inspired by the end I wished I could go back and apply to Harvard myself. Excellent book for any reader.

John Rogrigues shares an honest and inspiring story about his trials and triumphs, that will evoke various emotions from your own educational experiences as a youth. John Rogrigues is a prolific writer and a captivating storyteller, who provides a colorfully detailed account of what it means to be beautifully human. The synchronicity of his successful life experiences are a reflection of his optimism and compassion about life and relationships. I recommend this book because of the seamlessly effortless way the author is able to weave vulnerability, courage and humor in a way that helps you to remember we all have a light within us that deserves to shine!!

High School Dropout to Harvard is a memoir by John Rodrigues that reads like a fiction novel. He tells of creating giant ice sculptures that win international competitions, traveling aboard a cruise liner to numerous exotic locations, and getting into Harvard--all after dropping out of high school and fighting with dyslexia.

John shares the trials and tribulations of his life while living with a learning disability. As a child, he disappointed his parents and fellow students with his clumsiness and general comprehension issues. Instead of thinking in words and reading letters, he realizes early on that he thinks in pictures and that life is a giant puzzle. Over the course of his lifetime, he learns to harness this unusual ability to think in abstracts to achieve greatness and be unique. Although he drops out of high school and almost everyone thinks he's never amount to amount to anything, he eventually--through much perseverance and hard work--ends up matriculating at Harvard University.

It is John's unbelievable tale that draws the reader in, but it is the realization that every word is true that creates a lasting impression. John's battle with his own brain--and his conquering/compromising with it--can be applied to every person's life. He figured out a challenging aspect of himself, learned to work around that aspect/use it to his advantage, and accomplished more than he ever thought possible. This book is a must-read and an inspiration to people with disabilities and "normal" people alike!

Excellent resource for those timid about sharing their faith

Accessible Apologetics Workbook by Mikel Del Rosario is an excellent resource for those of us who aren't sure how to answer the tough questions others ask about our faith. The lessons in the workbook are written in a simple and easy to follow manner. Del Rosario provides plenty of scripture references to support his teaching that you can look up on your own. Each lesson has fill-in the blank sections that allow you to follow along without being distracted by endless note taking.

The videos that go along with the workbook help to solidify the lessons taught. Del Rosario uses easy to understand vernacular that non-theologians can grasp. Del Rosario does a great job holding your interest and interjects humor and anecdotes that apply to the lesson being taught.

Completing the lessons in Accessible Apologetics has enabled me to feel more confident with my ability to defend my faith the next time it is challenged. I would recommend that anyone interested in learning more about apologetics begin with Accessible Apologetics.

If you are a Christian going through a difficult time in your walk with the Lord, find yourself facing tough situations about your faith or still searching for the answers to life's difficult questions or have doubts about the existence of God. This book is a perfect way to learn the answers and overcome your struggles. Rosario actually teaches you valuable insight as he shares overwhelming evidence for the existence of God. He also provides you with a combination of 5 short video lessons to follow and walks you through each lesson. In addition, the workbook addresses real life examples, highlighting talking points for major arguments for defending faith and includes; scripture verses, outlines, & definitions. In my opinion, this workbook will help you to learn the Apologetics practice and will take you to a deeper level of understanding Christianity and ultimately equipped you to defend your faith in truth and love.

Accessible Apologetics by Mikel Del Rosario is a must read for anyone who is looking to better understand and defend their faith. Rosario has provided a wonderful tool for Christians to be able to break down their beliefs into simple, easy to understand pieces. Rosario provides a workbook that is simple and easy to follow, with points that connect and flow easily. The videos that go along with the book are extremely informative and simple to follow. The video lectures on not long, are entertaining to watch, and go at just the right pace. As a college student at a Christian university, I would say that this book is a must and is extremely helpful alongside other theology classes that can be so hard to navigate at times. The book also serves as a great resource to have on the bookshelf to go back and look reference whenever a question or difficult conversation arises.

Intimate with Error and In Love with Truth

In the life of many great Spiritual Masters there is a period in their life that is missing. "They tended to say, essentially, 'I was born, I wandered in confusion for twenty years, and then I awakened.' But they didn't show me the twenty years! They didn't actually lay bare the details that could convince me these holy people had once been like me. If I couldn't believe they had been like me, how could I believe I could become like them?" (p. 14)
Du Bois gives the reader the gift of raw experience nakedly exposed. The journal entries are compiled chronologically making very clear that her Path was a series of glimpses. In the journal entries Du Bois adds modern commentary; both to her younger self and to the reader. On pages 74-75 the modern commentary reflects, "Seems as if through the months and years just about any one of these light-filled insights might have sufficed, doesn't it? Because here it is again: inner awareness of nonduality-yet look at the pages still to turn!" Du Bois shows the reader that the Path can be glimpses: not always is Awakening accomplished and stabilized in the same moment. Footnotes add further clarification and insight to the entries.
Because the journals were kept over two decades we can see the transformation that takes place. The rage, anger, and every other emotional arising are laid bare and eventually dissolve into Love and Clarity. Also, Du Bois lets us see how great insight may then be followed by great obscurations. And how the desire to serve can pull a person from their happy little home mentally, physically and emotionally.
Personally, I found this to be an invaluable book. The detail to which Du Bois uses her own experience to point out the distinct negative mental states the West -particularly the U.S.- is capable of generating is powerful.
Little gems are tucked throughout the book to offer further guidance:
"Nothing to grasp at
or push away --
simply observing
mind's pure play" (p. 376)
I would recommend this book to those looking for an honest offering of Truth and Love, and how "We already are what we aspire to become. We are templates of truth, to be laid bare by love." (p. 17)

For those of us who read about the lives of masters and practitioners on the "spiritual path" to enhance our own efforts, Barbara DuBois' LIGHT YEARS is a very significant contribution to this literary tradition. The gravitas of her work is not so much her "attainment" if you will (although one suspects she is making significant progress), but the sharing of her naked awakeness, be it beatific or ugly. In psychology her self-expression might be called transparent--what you see is what you get. The emotional and cognitive honesty of her disclosures regarding a large section of her adult life has the unqualified feeling of authenticity, a ring of truth.

The "truth" for this memoirist, however, included all the blemishes, peccadillos, grand errors and personal breakthroughs she encountered during this period, unflinchingly described in often poetic prose and occasional verse. Moreover, beyond the limits of the genre, readers will be delighted with her fondness for words and word play. She seems to be a playful sort (e.g., at p.186-87, "Blowing my Knows," "Prophecies according to Nostrildamus" and "S'not what you think it is.") One senses there is an Ivy Leaguer lurking there somewhere.

Most importantly her book imbues in the willing reader the fortitude to "stick with it" and never stop watching the mind. Sogyal Rinpoche has noted that this generation needs spiritual "role models" and Barbara DuBois gives us that here in reminding us that "to err is human," yet we have to get back up on that saddle and continue to ride. In that she demonstrates the indefatigability that distinguishes the masters and can inspire us all.

Her memoir style is a bit challenging, but worth the rewards. I have the tendency to read early and closing sections of books before I launch into them fully and I feel the reader will benefit from that here by reviewing pages 381-383 at the outset to maximize their appreciation of the author's adventure. Yet this limitation is a trifle. One is left wondering when and if DuBois will pen the next chronological section of her journey in this life, late adulthood. We all need role models. I think we have a courageous one here.

An Inspiring Book

I greatly appreciate Barbara sharing her journey. Her relationship with her teacher made me realize that, even though many seekers want a spiritual teacher, having such a teacher would not make life easy. Barbara's teacher, Beloved, did not coddle her student, rather she challenged her time and again. A dedicated student must be willing to be peeled down to emptiness--and apparently it isn't easy, and it doesn't always feel like love. Beloved was a mirror to her student and the mirror did not always reflect how she thought she looked. Most readers will probably be able to relate to Barbara's spasms of opening and closing, opening and closing, and the slow release of the fetters that bind. Her journey inspires me to keep on with this path, and to know that the path itself is rewarding. I found that the book gained momentum, and I looked forward to the next time I was able to open its pages.

Amazingly good

Amazingly good! I was all like "who is this great author and how come I have not read her books before? Surely she must have written tons and I want to read them all."

This is Johanna Garth's debut novel. Please hurry up and write more.

Persephone Campbell is a beautiful girl with a special power--to draw out people' secrets. Haden (aka Hades) is checking out a pumpkin festival or whatever and runs into her. At first sight, he knows that she is special and wants to make her his queen. This is not a popular idea ( in the whole book only Hades himself thinks this is a good idea). People love Persey and Hades is having a hard time trying to close the deal.

It is very well done. This is the HADES I want to read about (see my review of "the goddess test"). He is coolly cunning, smart, and patient but he also has weaknesses (like miscalculating the time to negotiate for a million souls because he is not used to think about time). He plans well but his plan also fails sometimes because Persey also has her own special secrets up her sleeves (mostly people who love her without wanting anything in return and show that by their actions not their words). It is love and basic goodness (Aaron) and selflessness (Daniel, Rudy) that help Persey along.

Persey herself is also good. She is innocent and kind and good, very loveable but not too perfect. She has a dark side too.

Suspenseful, funny, very TOUCHINGLY SWEET!

Losing Beauty is a delicious exploration of how fragile human impulse control really is. Complete with a truly evil villain, a gorgeous smart-AND-sexy prince charming, and a sympathetic if extremely exotic heroine, the novel spans the globe in a fascinating exploration of the untapped potential of the human brain. It's a real teaser on answers to so many of life's basic questions. Highly recommend.

A page turner with heart, soul and smart writing!

I highly recommend this book, which falls into the rare category of good writing with a spellbinding plot. It has the perfect combination of romance, mystery and pop-culture references. The heroine, Percy, could have been too perfect, but, thanks to a "red pill/blue pill" moment, we are introduced to a darker side. I'm on the hunt to find the sequel (if it's written yet)!

Excellent Reference Guide To The NFA - Highly Recommended

"ATF National Firearms Act Handbook" is an indispensable reference guide for anyone needing to understand the complex provisions in the National Firearms Act (NFA). I was interested in this book because we are seriously considering applying for a Federal Firearms License (FFL), so it is very important to be absolutely sure that we are familiar and compliant with all of the laws and regulations.

This is the definitive guide since it was created in association with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the governmental agency responsible for enforcing firearm laws. The book has been formatted to make finding specific information quickly and it is written, where possible, in mostly layman's terms making it easier to understand both the letter and spirit of the regulations.

If you are new to firearm regulations, the first two chapters will be very beneficial to understanding the terms, acronyms, and the classifications of firearms. The remaining chapters cover the laws and regulations, with Chapter 5 specifically covering the business licensing of firearms dealers. The extensive Appendixes cover the actual NFA, forms, rulings, and sample letters.

This is a great resource for the firearms collector, enthusiast, and business owner.
