Has Helped My Marriage Immensely

Got a copy of this book 3 weeks ago with the hopes of improving my marriage.

And... it has helped a LOT!

I communicate more and better understand my wife and what she wants and needs.
Funny how that then helps me get more of what I want and need!

Just one of her tips about a specific text message to send to my wife and what to say was worth its weight in gold.

I also got their strong marriage system which is great because its like spending time directly with Dr. Dana (it's online video on their website).

If you want to improve your marriage (it sure beats the alternative) then I recommend picking up a copy - amazing how much it can help!

It is very informative, positive and it works!!! Saved my marriage!! I no longer blame my husband for everything ! It has restored our pre marriage love!!

During its life cycle, data engages various so-called owners, users, responsible parties, casual bystanders, good intentions, and blurred lines of authority and accountability. In each case, these touch-points have an opportunity to either improve or deplete the value of data based on their actions or inactions. This dynamic ecosystem is what gives data its well-earned designation as a living asset. Much like a living organism its behavior, health, growth, and potential are highly influenced by a number of ongoing environmental factors. It's rare to find a book written by someone who has been in the trenches that effectively articulates the nuances of governance and the impact specifically of focusing on data governance. Jim Orr does an exceptional job of highlighting the value of data governance in this book. More importantly, it is an easy read for anyone who is in a managerial and executive role.

While companies have made huge investments in their IT infrastructure systems and technology, very few enterprises have focused on how to extract impactful value from the basic asset that these technology investments were meant to harness, manage and govern - DATA. In this book, Mr. Orr lays out practical approaches to data governance. A must-read for executives...

Makes sense to me

I bought this book because the author is a shirt tail relation(ha). Having worked at the bottom rung of two major corporations, GM , Home Depot, I have found communication among all players involved to be at best, almost nonexistant. As a future product specialist , it would take me days to get an answer to a simple question because of all the different parties involved. I soon realized that I could get an answer to the same question if I had all parties in the same room at the same time in 15 minutes or less. Go figure. Jims ideas and concepts are clear, and most importantly havr common sense, which in my mind is most important.

About the Author
In 2009, Robin Patino closed the door to her Manhattan apartment for the final time, and left behind a 20-year business career to embark on a two-year journey of healing and self-discovery. Her adventures took her to Costa Rica to train as a yoga teacher, across the United States twice and through northern Spain, where she walked a 400-mile pilgrimage on a hip once destined for replacement surgery. Patino converted her life experiences into valuable lessons for reinventing her life.

A wonderfully shared story and insights

I simply cannot put this book down. So interesting and insightful and I'm really enjoying the descriptions of pilgrimage across Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Highly recommended, especially for those interested in healing their whole being.

Lovely Journey

I bought this book when visiting the Costa Rican town the author spends a lot of her spiritual journey in. I luckily got to work with and spend time with the author. I was pleasantly surprised about the honesty and candidness contained in the memoir. The reader gets a very real sense of the struggles the author endures and how her amazing ability to listen to herself is what pushes her back into a conscious life, despite some roadblocks along the way. I also connected with the way the books doesn't end in some tied up way because life never does. She is still on her journey. I feel like I got a glimpse into a transformative time in someone's life. Very inspiring!

An excellent and thought-provoking read. Robin Patino opens her heart and shares with us her journey to finding fulfillment in life. I found her descriptions of stepping out of the corporate race and going forward with what she knows is right, inspiring. Her book helps to highlight how individuals should evaluate what the true definition of a fulfilled life should be.

Different Ways of Doing Things (3.5 stars)

All About Nikki: The Fabulous First Season by Shawn James is the second teleplay I have read. Mr. James also wrote the first one, where the main character, Nikki, was introduced to me briefly. Nikki was a fictional character being played by an actress named Marilyn Marie. Now Nikki has gotten a life of her own and she believes everything should be all about her and no one else.

After Nikki's parents got a divorce, custody was awarded to her mother. However, her mother was all about business and money, so she sent Nikki to boarding schools. Due to the distance, Nikki and her mother's emotional relationship suffered. When Nikki got kicked out of yet another boarding school, her mother sent her to live with her father in California. She thought she was punishing Nikki, but she could not be further from the truth.

Donald Desmond, Nikki's father, was more than happy to take on the responsibility of raising his daughter. He used the time he was given to teach Nikki the right way to go about earning and giving respect. Donald wants nothing more than to change her from her stuck-up, disrespectful ways. However, it will not be as easy as he thinks. Will Donald have to use the old-fashioned belt to get Nikki to learn the proper way to treat people?

Mr. James provides me with a different type of reading experiences with his teleplays. I enjoy them and like being able to picture more of the scenes and the characters' actions without the added inflictions from the author. With all that said, there were some errors that needed corrections. There was one thing that stopped me in my flow of reading, causing me to turn back to an earlier episode (instead of chapters there are episodes). That thing was a repetitive beginning to two different episodes. I almost did not read the second one because I was certain it was the same one with a different episode title. However, I pushed through and enjoyed the episode. That one needed a little more creativity for the beginning, otherwise the entire teleplay was entertaining and at times emotional and/or funny. I recommend All About Nikki: The Fabulous First Season to readers of plays, young adult books and sitcom watchers.

Unique Reading Experience

"All About Nikki" is a spin-off of sorts of Shawn James' 2009 release "All About Marilyn." "All About Nikki" is written in teleplay form. If you've never read a teleplay don't let that deter you. Mr. James does clarify everything in the book by giving you Television Episode Basics before the book even begins.

Readers are introduced to the title character, Nikki Desmond. Nikki is a spoiled rich girl who has the world at her feet and is a little mischievous. When she gets kicked out of boarding school, yet again, her mother Leslie wastes no time and ships her off elsewhere. Leslie is a successful businesswoman and she doesn't need any distractions or interruptions, her only child included. So it's off to another boarding school for Nikki. In this instance, Nikki's father decides to step up to the plate and have Nikki live with him. When Nikki moves in with her father, the whole household turns into utter chaos. Nikki is rude, arrogant, and has great disdain for anyone not like her. She treats the family maid like she's beneath her and she often uses racial slurs when talking to her or about her.

With Nikki not being the most pleasant person to be around most of time, her father Donald wants to see if he can change her attitude by enrolling her in the local public high school. He wants her to appreciate the things she has, and he definitely doesn't want her to grow up expecting everything to be handed to her on a silver platter.

The concept is brilliant the way he intertwines both books - "All About Marilyn" and "All About Nikki." It was a pleasure. I highly recommend readers purchase both books. It is truly a unique reading experience. Shawn James is an author to keep your eyes on. Kudos, Shawn, for the wonderful job you've done.

He is a graduate of Christian Leadership Seminary in Elma, New York with a Master of Theology Degree and a Doctorate of Divinity degree. He is the pastor of Abundant Life International Baptist Cathedral in Jacksonville, NC. On June 16, 2001, he was installed as the Southeast District Overseer of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International (FGBCFI) of North Carolina. In March of 2005, he was elevated to the office of Bishop-Elect for the State of North Carolina. In July of 2005, he was consecrated to the office of Bishop. He provides continuous financial, agricultural, and medical support to churches he has planted abroad. Good advice for teenagers. Everyone has some, or thinks they do. Friends, family, the Internet. The problem is that for advice to be really good, it must be equal parts empathy and wisdom. To make sense of your world, the giver must feel things the way you feel them and see things the way you see them, before offering up an opinion.
 
The advice in this book is unusual because the folks pushing it aren't hip middle-aged experts talking to you in what they imagine to be cool teen voices that they vaguely remember from 1977. Well, okay...one of us is. I'm a board certified family psychologist. But the other eight co-authors are really sharp teenagers, or were at the time they wrote for Double Take, a weekly advice column that has been published in the Lawrence Journal World since 2004. Seven were high school seniors and one was an exceptional junior. Each won a contest to work for a year on Double Take. Most of the columns in this book were written in response to letters, many submitted by teenagers. The rest discussed topics we selected from current events and trends affecting teens.
 
Double Take and this book are frank, honest, and sometimes blunt. We discuss sex, contraception, pregnancy, sexual identity, cutting, falling in love, breaking up, finding new friends and treating the ones you have ethically, divorce, marriage, college, suicide, foster care, school, fear and hope, and a bunch of other issues you get up and face every morning. I know this because I've faced them too, over nineteen years and thousands of hours working with teens.
  
You can read this book cover-to-cover and take careful notes if you want, then pass it on to your friends. Or you can also use it as a reference book. We've set up the chapters and column titles to help you find what you need when dealing with your most recent crisis de jour. Either way, by the time you're out of your freshman year of college, I bet you'll have found your way through just about every topic in this book, and most of those in the other book, too. If we've missed something, email us and we'll answer your question in the column.

As I was doing final edits on this book, I still found myself laughing on one page and near tears on the next. But, more than anything, I was reminded yet again of just how smart teenagers are and how smart you have to be to get through this big, complex world we've left for you.

FANTASTIC and so helpful!

This book is exactly what the title says it is. The advice is applicable to real life situations that teens go through on a regular basis (I know I did!). Not only is the advice of Dr. Wes and his co-authors real and straightforward, it is also meaningful that it comes from peers that can give their opinions based on recent experience. It is so nice to know that someone else is dealing with the same issues that I did, or still am, and that there is someone out there who can offer words of wisdom to help guide me through it. I would recommend this book to all teens, girls and boys.

Fabulous book!

Dr. Wes Crenshaw is a skilled clinical psychologist who also happens to be a brilliant columnist. His way of solving teenage issues diverts from the typical therapist. His spot-on insight allows him to "get real" with the problem. He is a personable man, who gives advice which doesn't leave the reader or person feeling like, "well duh", and instead leaves them with an "oh.. wow, I never looked at it like that before" response. Because he has been in this profession for a long time, he knows the ropes. This book faces broad categories of the current teen problems. It could be perceived as a self-help book, but the wit involved gives it a unique essence. As a young adult myself, I found his book to be very helpful in my problems, as well as my peers. I think this is a must read, and once you read it, I'm positive your brain will melt with mine in satisfaction.

the reality of a teen's life

Dear Dr. Wes Real Life Advice for Teens is a great insight to some of the struggles teenagers face in their everyday life. It is helpful to a get a perspective from both a professional and yet another teen as well in the response. This book also helps parents be able to see what some perspectives are on hot topics without having to be in a discussion with their own teen before the parent is ready to tackle the topic. I was pleased that the book assisted me in forming some insight to be able to create some empathy for what the teenagers in my life are going through. Although, my sons are in elementary school some of these topics are already evident and I am glad to have at least briefly thought about what they may face sooner than later. Thanks Dr. Wes, co-authors and contributors!

Relevant and Entertaining Communications Training

I heard Ryan speak at the NPOA conference in New Orleans, LA in April, 2013. I read his book on the plane ride home in about 3 hours. He's entertaining and enlightening. I keep hearing his words in my head, and that doesn't usually happen with these books. He suggests re-reading it and I just might do that.

An unclear book about effective communication. Ironic much?

If this author wants everyone to understand the power of effective communication this book is as clear as mud. I chose to read this book in anticipation of hearing the author speak at an upcoming conference. I read about his teaching experience and preparation for a doctorate in organizational development so I anticipated that the book would be grounded in solid research. However, I get the impression that this book is an expansion of what might have been an effective trade journal article. There is no research cited and his anecdotal stories are tired and based on stereotypes. The author starts with a section basically written for those that have animosity or ambivalence towards "selling" or the "sales process" and makes the case that all "sales" is is effective communication. Fair enough. The second section called and "Adaptive Communication Model" is filed with unnecessary repetition and the categories the author develops to suggest different communication styles are muddled and ineffective. For example, he breaks people into binary categories like "Speak first, think later" and "Think first, speak later" type of people or "head vs heart" people but his examples go way beyond this type of categorization and it isn't clear whether he is talking about personality, communication style, cultural differences, etc. There are other more effective ways to break down the communication process and understand people's personality and styles that have lots of solid research behind them. For example Myers Briggs (which the author is certified to teach but never mentions). Another example, the author talks about time preference categories "5 o'clock on the dot" people and "5 o'clock somewhere people" but never mentions that often this difference is as much cultural as caused by any other reason. This whole section could be summed up as "pay attention to how others communicate and adapt your style accordingly to connect with them." Nothing ground breaking or particularly insightful about how to do that. Finally, the 3rd section, Integrated Communications seems to be a complete non-sequiter because it is focused on communication and social media whereas the rest of the book was focused on interpersonal communication. This section appears to be written for an audience of baby boomers that might be trying to make sense of the internet, Facebook, twitter, etc. including recommendations for how to send emails effectively. Seriously? It barely makes the case for why this type of communication is important and doesn't even scratch the surface on how to do it effectively. The author offers 5 Cs of effective communication that seems like it is lifted from a high school public speaking course or a communications 101 course at community college. He then talks briefly about group dynamics, branding, etc. but nothing with enough depth or citing any resources if you want to learn more about these important topics. Finally the author tries to pull this hodgepodge of information together as if it's a coherent argument for being what he calls an EIS (Everyon is in Sales) person in their workplace in a gimmicky way that suggests he is attempting to create his own brand of adaptive communication when there is already much more effective tools in the marketplace. Overall, a poorly planned effort that is in desperate need of editing, but I fear if it is edited it would return to it's former format as series of undergraduate or maybe Master's level papers.

As a small business owner for the last 20 years, this book not only reminded me of the skills I have used to start and grow my family business, but also taught me new ways of thinking about communication and how to apply these in a down to earth and realistic way.
