Take a Chance

I agree with the other reviewer. This is one of those books that you take a chance on and hope for the best. It delivered a very deliberate story with fairly well developed characters. I mostly enjoyed the fact that it spent a good deal of time in the early stages of the financial crisis and realistically portrayed how one family tried to cope with the situation until events overtook them.
Unlike many books of the genre, this one did not focus on people who were already preparing, or even one hard-core survivalist surrounded by skeptics. This book focused on a family almost completely unprepared for so much as a thunderstorm. I find that much more realistic in a novel than the usual superman-types who already have a fortified compound and a group of +20 ex-Marines armed to the teeth with 20-years of food, fuel and water stored up. It reminds me of the first few chapters of Patriots.
For the majority of the book, the writer seems to take a very neutral position concerning God, guns and government. He doesn't espouse any radical, religious or libertarian views through his characters, although many of them come to embrace some very central ideals following their various ordeals.
Overall a good read and I recommend it.

Good reading and thought provoking

Mr. King should be commended for doing his homework in this new book that ties together a lot of doomsday scenarios into one big catastrophe. Peak oil, the credit crunch and the mortgage disaster all play a part in the collapse at the center of this tale, and the people who endure the aftermath. I did get a little tired of the diatribes against the Federal Reserve and the cabal of bankers who secretly run the American economy, but that is a minor gripe. Also, the book could use the attention of a professional editor to correct some spelling and grammar errors, but really the book is a cut above most self published efforts.
All in all, a very enjoyable read. Hopefully, Mr. King can be convinced to write another book in this setting: I would really love to find out how the Thompson family makes out in those troubled times.

Very good!

This book was very well written and had very good instructions on what to do if a collapse happened. It also gave you hope if one did happen, I recommend this book to anyone that loves adventure and has hope for our future.
