Songwriter Jane Fallon’s Father Gerald (Jerry) Dwane Ross, left Arkansas as an 11 –year-old. It was 1936 and The Great Depression had taken its toll across the South. His family made the westward march from guaranteed proverty to potential prosperity. On a trip through Central Oregon, the author listens to her father’s stories of a time when work was just what you did and life is less complicated than it is now. Meanwhile, she challenges herself to write a song a day. But what begins as a one song-a-day challenge evolves into a journey of self-discovery that is part travelogue, part biography, and part creative treatise. Each day chronicles the life of her 83- year-old father as he grew from a sharecropper’s son in Arkansas to an Oregon cattleman. Along the way, he revisits his experiences as a workingman in post WWII California. As she listens to her dad’s stories, she ventures into the realm of creativity, exploring where songs come from and how they reflect the world around us. Through music she takes us all to a home that expands far beyond the limits of a house or country and into the realm of the soul and spirit. About the Author
Jane Fallon is also an award winning songwriter with five CD’s of original music to her credit. Her songs have been played on radio stations throughout the world . This is her first attempt at non-fiction. She began her career singing in a trio with her sister and cousin. Later she received formal vocal training at Eastern Oregon University and spent several years in local musical theater.A veteran performer, her smooth, rich voice and well-written songs get noticed. With vocals that have been called “angelic” and “mesmerizing”, by Boston's Metronome magazine, her original songs “combine humor, intelligence, and deep musicality with an artfulness that is unusual.” (Wildy's Word Music blog). Her newest CD “Gemini Rising”, co-produced with Jeff Root and Jim Henry has been called by Rambles.net “ a collection of songs that stitches itself together note by note and warms the soul.” Bill Copeland calls her writing “beautiful, honest, and powerful.” She lives in New Hampshire with her husband, Jack, where she teaches Composition and Communications at Southern New Hampshire University, and is the mother of three wonderful human beings named Theresa, Patrick, and Nicholas.

A family memoir, with music

Jane Ross Fallon is a singer, songwriter, and teacher who currently lives in New Hampshire. She grew up in California and Oregon. But her father was an "Arkansas traveler," who at the age of eleven, relocated with his family to the west coast from Arkansas, in the wake of the Great Depression. When Jane goes back to Oregon for a regular visit in June 2008, she is inspired to learn more and to document her father's past. Might she be able to craft a new song during each day of her trip, too? That's her self-imposed challenge.
Gerald "Jerry" Ross is a widower in his early 80s. (Jane's mother, Helen, passed away in 2006.) He answers his daughter's questions about his childhood in Arkansas, the family's move to California, and the early days of her parents' marriage. She acts as reporter and duly records his conversations and recollections. She adds facts and references when necessary, so that we can place her ancestral stories within the larger context of American history. She even makes an additional side trip to Arkansas herself in January 2011, to gain perspective on the landscape that the Rosses left behind. The result is as complete a family portrait as she can assemble.
Jane's days are marked by separate themed chapters that each begin with an interview with her father. Then she searches for the corresponding inspiration for a song and supplies an explanation for writing it. Each chapter closes with the lyrics to the finished tune. This unique, multifaceted book thus serves as a memoir and a travel narrative that offers a way to "go home" through music.
Black and white photos are scattered throughout the text, allowing us to know the main characters and the key places in their lives. The accompanying CD carries recordings of all seven of the songs Jane created about her experiences. Her voice has a nice quality to it; and her story-songs were composed in a variety of styles. One of the additional selections here is the traditional folk tune, "She Appeared to be 18 or 19 Years Old," sung by Jerry Ross. It's a real treat for us to be able at last to hear the father's voice, after having previously just read his transcribed dialogues on the printed pages.
"Seven Songs in Seven Days" offers not just good storytelling, but also a few peeks into the creative process of songwriting. By writing and thinking about our parents' pasts, we can better understand the paths we choose for ourselves. This book and CD package should be of interest to those intrigued by personal memoirs, by the father-daughter relationship, by the mystique of the Arkansas migrants of the Great Depression, and by the gumption it takes to craft a melody with lyrics out of thin air. It might even appeal to fans of Earlene Fowler's Benni Harper mystery novels, since Jane Fallon shares similar roots with both fictitious Benni and real-life author Earlene.
