This book is magic... hard to put it down!

"In Search of Destiny" is a wonderful book and I thank this author for writing it! The structure of the book and its content are just fantastic. I love how she introduces the reader step by step to the science of Jyotish (Vedic astrology). When you start to read this book it's really hard to put it down. It's like a time machine, and you feel you are part of that epoch when you read the biographies. You also feel like Sherlock Holmes, when - based on the astrological chart - you try to figure out why this planetary configuration made that specific destiny.
This is also an academic-value book, with the Glossary of Sanskrit and Astrological terms, bibliography, extensive footnotes and comprehensive index. Chapter 1 - "Historical Context and Collective Destiny" - is a gem in and of itself. It covers 1000 years of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions and how they define world history. There is an introductory chapter to Vedic astrology, and all the principles when introduced across the book are very well explained. After this, in the following chapters the Ascendants from Aries to Libra are presented. Same Ascendant but different destiny. Fascinating. I can only hope there will be a second volume.
If you are a serious student reading the book for the first time, my advice is to take notes when you find something new. Learn the notes by heart and reread the book. Than reread it again. I am sure that every time when you reread you will find something new, something that escaped your attention the first time. It's magic. Like the book itself. Amazing.

In-depth, interesting, and scholarly

Considerable effort and scholarship has gone into this book, which is reflected in its in-depth and stimulating discussion of life through Vedic astrology. Hart de Fouw's book "Light on Life" is often mentioned in Vedic astrology circles as being a great source to draw upon, and I think Edith Hathaway's book will likely be a book I will similarly go back to over time too. Maybe it's because I'm at an intermediate stage in my study of Vedic astrology that I find the book requires discipline to read, or maybe it's a reflection of the depth and detail within it. It contains a large Chapter 1 on historical context and collective destiny (with a particular focus on Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions), a useful overview chapter with the essentials of Vedic astrology, and seven chapters for Aries through Libra Ascendants, with four, five, or six detailed biographies in each chapter. There is a lot of biographical detail included for each chart example, together with a detailed explanation of how the astrology plays out in the life under discussion. I like how the nakshatras are used to help guide the analysis - more than I've seen in most books I've read so far. Likewise, yogas are also regularly discussed. There is a comprehensive glossary where one can find discussion of such things as planetary friendships, Gandanta, or Gaja Kesari yoga, for example. The book receives very favourable comment from experienced practitioners in the field, including Chakrapani Ullal, James Kelleher, Dennis Flaherty, and K. N. Rao. It's a good one to be sure.

This is highly informative and in my opinion essential reading for all those seeking an understanding of Vedic astrology. You will learn a great deal about the effect of jupiter saturn conjunctions collectively and individualy but that is just one dimension of this fascinating book. Hathaway has a grasp of history, politics and culture but most importantly it is the way she explores these subjects astrologicaly. She interprets horoscopes ranging from Martin Luther King Jr. to Marilyn Monroe utilising navamsha, nakshatra lords, houses, signs, aspects and other Jyotish principles that are explained in a clear lively style.Buy this book, read it, study it and learn but most of all enjoy this gift of light Edith has offered the world
