Words fail me....

I would like to say something positive about this book so I will.....It was free.
Beyond that fact this book was almost unreadable. The dialog and character development were horrible. I felt like the author had just bought a thesaurus and was discovering its use for the first time. I lived in Louisiana for several years and the authors attempt to capture the dialect used in the state was horrendous. I wish I had more positive things to say but sadly I would recommend not wasting your time on this book.

What Could Have Been

This book could have been good if . . . After all, it involves politics and corruption, race and sex, and is set in New Orleans. The problem is that if there was ever a writer who needed to memorize Elmore Leonard's rules for writing fiction, Mr. Cherot is that writer. The attempt at dialect was ludicrous, and the reader has to stifle his laughter when reading some of the sentences. A sample: "Mike tumbled that information around in the convoluted layers of gray matter in his cerebrum."

novel with a good plot but dificult to read due to dialect

Naw'lins is a novel about finding out if a murder was commitment for political reasons or if it was committed for racial reasons. The author of this novel, Ben Cherot seems to have in his mind how he wants the story to go and what kind of novel he wants this story to be for its readers. However, the author while trying to give a realistic impression of the dialect of New Orleans seems to lose his readers in this dialect and confuse them. This made the story difficult to read and the actual plot difficult to understand. If Ben Cherot would have not overwhelmed his readers with dialect and scenery then this novel would have been something worth reading over again.
