MSRP: $75.00 Special Offer of $49.95 in celebration of YOU CAN'T EAT DIRT receiving the honor of a Silver Medal IPPY award for Best-Non-Fiction (West-Pacific United States). In 1952, a wife, mother, and small-business owner living in Downey, California, unexpectedly found herself vice chairman of the Tribal Council for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Within two years, she was chairman of this disadvantaged band in Palm Springs, California, leading the first all-women tribal council in the United States and setting into motion a sequence of events that would alter the destinies and fortunes of her tribe and, ultimately, Native Americans across the nation. You Can't Eat Dirt tells the remarkable story of Vyola J. Ortner and her historic political tenure. Part autobiography, part biography, the book explains how she led the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in its struggle for political independence and economic development, waging a campaign to maximize the potential of its sole asset - land. Committed to progressive change, Ortner maneuvered through local, state and federal arenas, creating new business opportunities that forever benefited the Agua Caliente and enabled all tribes in the US to shape their own economic futures. This is the chronicle of a woman's singular journey and of a tribe at the crossroads of history. It includes her first-hand account as a tribal and civic leader, set in a lavishly illustrated volume of photographs and rare documents. It is supplemented with a critical and historical essay on her political work by Diana C. du Pont. A comprehensive chronology offers both a record of Ortner's public life and a selected timeline of important events in Native America. In addition to being an engaging biography of an extraordinary woman, this book is an essential addition to women's studies, the history of Palm Springs, Native American studies, the Agua Caliente Cahuilla, tribal law, and US-Indian relations.

Capturing the journey
By SW
Diana du Pont's new book, You Can't Eat Dirt, is the first-person account of the life and leadership of Vyola Ortner, Chairman of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Tribe. This tome is a vast undertaking and Diana has expertly handled the task creating a piece of history for the record books. She captures the era with countless photos and headlines, one datelined 1958, "Lady Chief Leads Tribe to Real Estate Wampum."

Leading the first all-woman tribal council, Chief Ortner changed Palm Springs forever. She was quoted in 1957 as saying she wanted to "make the area as important a health center as Saratoga, Arkansas and other hot springs resorts throughout the nation." And she did. Thanks Diana, for capturing the journey.

Read the review cannot afford the price of the book but hope to later. I think all tribes should have a woman author to tell that side of that story. Would cetainly help people to understand what a hardship those women have had

A Journey through 'Her-story'
By C. Hart
Diana C. Du Pont leads us on the journey of Vyola J. Ortner, a tenacious character who through her birth right at a crossroads in time and place came to lead the first all woman Tribal Council of a sovereign nation in the United States. Part history book, part memoir, part photo album and scrapbook, this is a fascinating 'Her-story' of the Aqua Caliente band of Cahuilla (kaw-we-ah) Indians, that will hold the attention of anyone interested in Native American history, how the U.S. government dealt with tribes, as well as the history of Palm Springs, California. After reading this inviting coffee table size book I have a new appreciation for what went into the creation of this city and the preservation of a band of Native Americans that could easily have been totally assimilated and lost to us.

Mrs. Ortner is an inspiration for all women (and men) who need to get a job done: "I put my head up, my shoulders back, and went and did it. Where I got the guts, I'll never know. I just had to do it. Simple as that!" She is a woman of service and love for her culture (European and Native American)and a good teacher for us all as we move forward in the 21st century.
