A Skeptic's Perspective

I have always been agnostic about most metaphysical matters, but this is a good book whether one reads it as a religious person looking for confirmation of their beliefs or as a scientist curious about the common characteristics near death experiences. The recurring themes in the various accounts are fascinating; the differences and similarities are worth studying. If it is nothing else it is a book that shows us what sort of mental states are possible. Human beings can feel unlimited bliss; people can change dramatically by being propelled into an unfamiliar reality. Whether one believes this is accomplished by a divine force, a chemical mechanism or a chemical mechanism acting on behalf of a divine force is irrelevant to appreciating this unique compilation of stories. I only wish the author had taken space to expiate upon the hundred or thousands of case studies he has read.

Fascinating!

Having read some but not much about near death experiences before, and still very skeptical about it all, I was very curious about this book. This is not a dissertation on the subject but a collection of actual first-hand accounts from people who have technically died and come back to tell their story. What is striking is the frequency and consistency of similar experiences people have before being resuscitated back to this mortal coil, and not just the typical "I saw a white light" variety. Rike has done a great deal of research here with almost no editorializing, preferring to let the many "after death" accounts speak for themselves. Fascinating stuff.
