All our thoughts, actions, habits, reflections, emotions—everything that constitutes existing—originates from our brain. Therefore, on the road to changing ourselves and those around us for the better, the brain is the first destination. Once we have achieved a level of mastery over our brain, we can begin to control our body. We can gear our habits toward improving our health, fitness, and well-being, and we can maintain those habits over time—but only if we have disciplined our brain to do so. Once we have control over our brain and our body, we are well on our way to controlling all the other, less tangible aspects of our life, from building confidence to developing a stronger character. About the Author
Alex Southmayd was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and raised in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Groton School, a prep school in Groton, Massachusetts, with honors. At Groton, he was Vice President of the Debate Team, President of the French Club, a head board member of the Groton Community Service Board, a writer for the school newspaper, the lead trumpeter in the Jazz Band, a member of the varsity squash team, and an All-League squash player. He scored 800, 800, and 770 on the Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics sections of the SAT, respectively, and he is an AP Scholar with Distinction. Alex also qualified to sit for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. His favorite area of study is foreign languages, and he is fluent in French. Alex is a lifeguard, he lives in Boston, and he is the class of 2015 at Amherst College.

Must read for any teen!

`Brain Snacks for Teens on the Go! Second Edition: 50 Smart Ideas To Turbo-Charge Your Life' by Alex Southmayd is a collection of 50 smart ideas for any teenager to help them navigate through life. One of the most remarkable facts about `Brain Snacks for Teens on the Go!' (ie `Brain Snacks' referred to in this review) is the fact that it is written for teens by a teen. How else can you expect to relate to another teen if you don't put yourself into their shoes? In this case it was written by their peer Alex Southmayd who fully understands the hardships of what teens are going through at that time not an elderly man looking back at his childhood days trying to relate.

`Brain Snacks' is divided up into 4 easy sections for reading and for follow-up reference: Your Brain, Your Body, Your Life, and Your World. Each section is filled with examples, step-by-step guides, quotes, and even scientific studies backing up claims. Not only does Southmayd interview Harvard medical professors, but within this guide it is filled with tons of medical facts. I found those facts to be one of my favorite parts for not only do those examples go into detail about the food pyramid but also goes into full detail about what each section and what is made up within and examples of healthy foods. But Southmayd doesn't even stop there, for there are examples of the right type of `power snacks' to eat for brain power, body energy and even harmful things not to put into your body. Southmayd coves it all here in one collection that will help any teen get by those hard years where they are trying to find themselves and shape into adults. With life-long nutritional information that any teen can take lessons that will help shape them into a very health conscious adult.

Another two sections that I thoroughly enjoyed where reducing your carbon footprint and changing the world in 30 days and 30 ways, for even though as adults we learn to be more conscious of the fact of waste it always helps to teach children and teens when they are young. I found this section to be everything that I wanted it to be; easy 3 step action guide to help you and humorous anecdotes that anyone could relate to. For changing the world in 30 days and 30 ways I felt this section was so very clever and so simple that anyone could do them and could be applied to the pass-it-on scenario. I also got inspired while reading and thought I could easily do at least ½ of the items on the list to help change my world.

Very well written and easy to follow; a smart idea guide that I would see as a must read for any teen for it is filled with so much information. If you're worried that this is just a bullet and note type book with no author insight then you have nothing to worry about. Southmayd includes personal anecdotes that are humorous but also very insightful.

This is a great book for any teenager!

Teens sometimes need a bit of guidance, and oftentimes that guidance needs to come from someone other than their parents, teachers and coaches. It needs to come from someone who really gets it, someone who's cool and collected and who doesn't condescend.
In Alex Southmayd's second edition of "Brain Snacks for Teens on the Go!: 50 Smart Ideas to Turbo-Charge Your Life," the young author provides that guidance. He offers a simple "how-to" on making the most of one's teen years.

As in any personal development book, establishing the author's credibility poses a challenge. After all, Alex Southmayd, a resident of Wayland and Weston, is not a professor at Harvard University, and he is not a psychologist - he's just a freshman at Amherst College.
But he is an exceptional student in the classroom and in life, and he recorded perfect scores on the SAT. He is a young person who has learned from his successes and failures as a teen, and he is able to effectively communicate those ups and downs in an insightful and humorous manner. This is precisely what gives him credibility.
His sense of humor and simple prose remind the reader that after all is said and done, he's a regular guy - a real person who doesn't don a facade to get his point across. The book's success hinges on Southmayd's personality, which is charming and nonthreatening. There are preachy moments, sure. But he veils them with playful rhetoric: "Have you heard the latest news? Cigarettes kill people."

As for the content of the book, Southmayd has done his research. When talking about the negative effects of alcohol, for example, he lists the repercussions identified by the American Medical Association. Despite his comprehensive research, he's done a great job of condensing the key points. The science is informative without being overwhelming. He strikes the perfect balance - the book is readable, educational and never boring. The lessons he teaches are invaluable - positivity, time management, study habits, how to succeed on the SAT, and how to make a difference on the planet, just to name a few.

What is perhaps the most successful aspect of the book is its format. The book is divided into four sections - "Your Brain," "Your Body," "Your Life" and "Your World." Each section contains an overarching theme and is further divided into "Snacks" - short, concise lessons. These lessons are often followed by "Action Plans" that provide concrete steps toward accomplishing one's teenage goals. This is a very readable format. It takes a couple minutes to read each Snack, and the Action Plans are a cakewalk to understand. The format is perfect for today's attention-deficit masses.
The book has been endorsed by bestselling author Sean Covey, author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens," and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), which was founded at Wayland High School in 1981. Mark A. Estes, MD, a leading cardiologist and a professor at Tufts Medical School in Boston, wrote a thoughtful forward to the book.
On the whole, Southmayd has done an excellent job with his book. With the aid of his charming persona, he has constructed a palatable self-help guide for teens. It's a quick, satisfying read for any successful or struggling teen, and it's abundant with well-researched bits of wisdom.

This is a great book for all teenagers. Packed with solid and well researched information that can be helpful to any teenager. One of the many things I found interesting about this book, that is was written by a teenager, from a teenagers perspective.
