Excellent book: a must have!

Reading this book has been such a blessing to myself and as a byproduct to my family. I wish everyone would read this and be blessed themselves. It gives me the tools and encouragement I needed to live out the call of Christ Jesus, to be filled with his spirit and to love one another. Not with a love that enables and not with tough love that divides. The bible is clear about what it means to be a spirit controlled Christian. To be a witness and a light to the world of the God who first loved us. Following in the wisdom of scripture, Crystal has helped to clear up the mixed messages that are sent to Christians and to all parents about how to first love your child and others, not with just words but with actions; to be a model of what it means to be the person you want your child to be. It is a book based upon truth. I have had so many mixed messages about how to be a good parent and to be good to others that has often lead to exhaustion and frustration. Following the ideas that she presents and gaining a clearer understanding of what scripture says, I feel liberated. The liberation I should feel because Christ Jesus says his burden is easy and his yoke is light. The bible calls children a blessing and a joy. After reading her book, I can say that implementing her ideas has created a peaceful home where my relationships with others are a blessing and a joy. They are filled with actions of integrity.

a must-read for each family!

I've been blessed to know Crystal for almost 9 years now - first online, then in person.
The principles in this book are ones I've seen her employ in her own family, and we've internalized them into our family life here as well. I'm not exaggerating when I say that Grace-Based Living has revolutionized my parenting and my marriage - my husband and I both find that things go so much more smoothly when we are focused on relationship with each other, with our son, and with our Creator.
All my son knows is life by these principles, and I enjoy watching him put them in action with his friends and with us.
I'm excited to see this book published for Kindle, where it can reach an even broader audience - because it's one of the few books I've read where I believe that everyone can glean something useful!

Excellent book for the Christian family!

I love this book! Crystal covers marriage as well as parenting in this book which I found very helpful! I also loved the chapter about disciplining children with special needs. And she backs everything up with clear biblical teaching. She even teaches Hebrew meanings of certain Scriptures! This is a must read for all Christian families!

Great prep for TX MPJE

This book is extremely helpful to prep for the TX MPJE. Most if not all of the questions in the exam are addressed in this book. Only issue I have is that it is a lot of information to read. I think a more concise version should be made specifically for MPJE preparation. Overall, I am glad I used this book and passed with about 3 weeks of studying. I would recommend this book.

Excellent

A little on the heavy side, but it has everything you need to know to do well on the test.

There are a few sections that are included that have never been implemented in law. The authors know this and should have made note of it in the text so you don't waste your time studying those sections, even if they choose to leave it in for completeness sake. ie. the section on substituting seizure generics etc.

Regardless, there is all the information you need in one place to do extremely well on the test. Just takes a bit of time to work through it all.

Jesse James-Finally Laid to Rest!

This book is the final word on the true fate of Jesse James and is the death knell for the traditionalist story. The evidence presented here is extremely compelling and shows with overwhelming evidence that Jesse James did indeed fake his death in 1882 and go on to live as a respected farmer in Texas under the assumed name of a distant relative. That may sound farfetched to some but the new photographs and evidence presented here are absolutely convincing and give expanded validity to her claims of previous books on the subject in 1998 and 2007 respectively. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Jesse James, outlaws, or the Old West in general. This is a really great read. Buy it you won't regret it!

This is a great american story, shared by the great granddaughter of
Jesse W. James. Jesse,the preacher's son, veers off the straight and narrow path for while, to later settle down as a family man in the heart of Texas. Having spent many years on the trail of the man known in Texas as James L. Courtney, Betty has amassed a colossal amount of evidence, including photographs, which prove that he was actually Jesse W. James. Betty Duke's book challenges the reader to go beyond the traditional story of this Missouri-born man, in order to find out what really happened to him. Jesse James trail did end in Texas, and thanks to the author, his story is now available for the world to see.

Betty Duke has done it. She has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that her great grandfather was Jesse James and he was not killed in 1882 by Bob Ford, or anyone else. Betty backs up every statement of fact with clear and strong evidence, no heresay, no rumors, no false photos, nothing. She dubs her detractors as "Hired Guns". Those hired guns have no more bullets and they are spinning in circles. She never should have had to deal with them in the first place because they have known all along everything she has said is the truth. This is must reading for anyone interested in what REALLY happened to Jesse James.

In the Ada Bozeman Tradition--a Vital Stepping Stone

I am delighted to see that Look Inside the Book has been activated and urge one and all to look over the table of contents and then buy the book. This is a preliminary review, mostly because it causes me pain to see no review at all on this important work. A copy of the book is on the way to me from the publisher. I will insert my substantive additional comments in a few days.

The book is in the Ada Bozeman tradition, and brings back to mind my continuing recommendation that no one be allowed to graduate from any serious international studies or international security course without reading at least the 25-page introduction, but ideally the full work:

Strategic Intelligence & Statecraft: Selected Essays (Brassey's Intelligence and National Security Library)

She is to intelligence and statecraft what Will and Ariel Durant are to the study of history.

It distresses me to observe that we have not come far since this book was published, with many failures across the fifteen slices of human intelligence (HUMINT) among which are included the Human Terrain Teams (HTT) that I believe should be absorbed into the new active duty Civil Affairs Brigade with regional battalions. This would be an excellent time to hold a conference and do a follow-on book, this time integrating both the full spectrum of HUMINT capabilities, and the new meme, Multinational, Multiagency, Multidisciplinary, Multidomain Information-Sharing and Sense-Making (M4IS2).

Within this book, several of the chapters stand out for me:

"Hybrid Wars" by Col John J. mccuen, USA (Ret)

QUOTE (75): "Hybrid war appears new in that it requires simultaneous rather than sequential success in these diverse but related 'population battlegrounds.'"

"Avoiding the Cookie Cutter Approach to Culture: Lessons Learned from Operations in East Africa," by Maj Christopher H. Varhola USAR and LtCol Laura R. Varhola, USA

QUOTE (156): Inadequate preparation and planning (today) "Despite the lessons learned in Iraq, operations like those ongoing in Kenya and Tanzania are marked by high personnel turnover. Moverow, most of the personnel desployed there have received little or no training on the region, have no Swahili language ability, and do not have a chain of command insisting that they learn the indigneous language in situ [which would not matter since they rotate out so quickly."

I am stunned--stunned beyond belief--that military commanders desperate for a culture belly-button have tended to appoint the predominantly Christian chaplains to that position. Talk about the blind leading the deaf.

"Fourth Generation Warfare evolves, Fifth Emerges," by Col T. X. Hammes, USMC (Ret).

QUOTE (312): Fifth-generation warfare will result from the continued shift of political and social loyalties to causes rather than nations."

Col Hammes provides a very tight opening on how most of the US Government refused to take 4th Generation warfare seriously (even after Al Qaeda stated that this was their focus), and does a nice job of showing how all generations of warfare continue to be present while fifth generation emerges in which the emphasis is on a global strategic narrative (information operations) with supporting violent actions.

The book ends with an all too short piece from Antulio Echevarria II, one of the top scholars at the U.S. Army's Strategic Studies Institute (SSI), on "Wars of Ideas and the War of Ideas, and that is perhaps the irony of this superb work brouight together by editor Juliana Geran Pilon: despite the excellence of this specific book, and the coherence of the contributions from all of the authors, the US Government generally, including the Department of State, and the Department of Defense more specficially, are in the toilet when it comes to recognizing the cultural nuances of confrontation in the 21st Century.

I am reminded of Tony Zinni's brilliant distinction among the six different wars that were waged in Viet-Nam all at the same time depending the geographic and demographic terrain, this author takes the concept a step further to posit something that does not exist but should: Whole of Government Multinational Multifunctional War-Peace Spectrum Operations--full court press on all fronts, not just the military front.

Here are a tiny handful of books that I respect along with this one, on this topic. The US Government is massively ignorant about reality and especially about cultural nuances, so all of these books are vital to anyone who has aspirations of public or private service in the international arena, who wishes to display integrity in all respects. Any fool can lecture the "other," understanding them is quite another matter.

About the Author
Greg McCall is the founder of Rock Crest Capital, LLC, an alternative asset management firm based in Norwalk, Connecticut. He has spent the past twenty years working with technology, consumer, and energy companies as a hedge fund manager and venture investor. Prior to founding and managing Rock Crest Capital, a $175-million fund in 2007, Greg was managing director at Westway Capital, a $990-million hedge fund focused on technology markets, as well as companies and industries significantly altered by technological progress. He co-managed a direct investment portfolio of both private and public companies. He has consulted with and/or invested in private companies, including Greenfield Online, SuperWater Solutions, Earth Markets, Yipes!, and Tantivy Communications. Before Westway Capital, Greg was an early partner at Dietche & Field Advisors, a $5-billion investment fund. Acting as an analyst/portfolio manager, he directed investments in the technology sector. During his career, Greg has experienced, firsthand, best practices management from start-up ventures to seasoned public companies, and in addition to serving on various panels, being quoted in multiple publications, and speaking at conferences, he has met and consulted with many senior managers, operating-level employees, and consultants. Excellent read and very informative

I'm in the process of reading The Monopoly Method through for the second time now and I have been thoroughly pleased with the information and methodology in Mr. McCall's book. As an individual investor who is fascinated by the markets and would love to transition into professional money management one day, I found this book to be an excellent resource for developing a plan and seeing it through to execution.

Many investors, myself included at times, tend to approach investing without the necessary structure or process needed to make informed decisions. It's one thing to put your money down on a stock through speculation or gambling, but for investors who truly want to make money over the long term, there is no substitute for having a process through which your trades and decisions are executed. You may not agree with Mr. McCall's approach or the scoring system sponsored in the book or even with any of the metrics used, but even those people who disagree will benefit from the idea of having a structured philosophy, discipline, and process. From stock selection to portfolio management to selling decisions, Mr. McCall lays out a method to develop this structure, this process, this plan, that he believes will help investors make consistently profitable decisions. And it is a plan Mr. McCall has derived from his ample experience as a professional in the financial industry. It is refreshing to have the curtain pulled back a bit.

I will agree with another reviewer that a slight drawback is a lack of proof in the success rate of the scoring system laid out in the book. And there is not a strict formulaic model by which scores are given for each of the 11 factors used in the scoring system. This allows for each individual to adjust the way he or she assigns scores subjectively, all the while maintaining the basic structure of the scoring model. While I find the subjectivity appealing in that it allows for one to tinker with the system to fit his or her own style (for example, adding a specific point allotment for Free Cash Flow or Earnings per Share growth), there may be those who wish that the work of scoring and rating companies is methodically done for them.

I highly recommend Mr. McCall's book for anyone interested in developing a plan for stock selection and portfolio management. Another plus in the book is the time spent explaining the reasons why Mr. McCall finds certain metrics to be important and the discussion of specific themes and investing in different industries.

Overall anyone interested in the markets should find significant value in this book and I highly recommend it.

A Serious Strategy for Serious Investors

In today's article, MagicDiligence will review The Monopoly Method by Greg McCall. This book contains some investment processes and insights that can be useful to those interested in applying due diligence to stocks uncovered by Magic Formula Investing.
The purpose of the book is laying out a structured stock investing process known as the Monopoly Method. The main theme of this process is choosing companies that, through various methods, have obtained "unfair advantages" over current and prospective competitors that allow them to consistently earn high returns on capital and provide greater returns to shareholders.

We've seen this approach before, most prominently in Pat Dorsey's The Little Book that Builds Wealth. But Monopoly Method is wider than that book. McCall covers a lot of ground here. There is a chapter that goes into detail on the tenants of both fundamental and technical analysis. There is a useful chapter that covers the most important things to look for in 6 general industry categories (what's important to a tech firm is not necessarily important to a commodities producer!). And of course, McCall provides his own assessment of factors that provide a company the coveted "monopolistic tendencies" that so often lead to outperforming investments.

Most of the later chapters of the book focus on putting together the method and laying out examples of it in use. Without spoiling the book too much, the method itself is a 15-point scoring system applied to a single equity, with 11 discrete factors. Some of the factors are pretty basic - revenue and margin growth, for example. Others require more subjectivity. Stocks scoring 10 or up are considered "buys". 8-10 are "holds", and 7 or below would not be considered for investment. Following this structure, McCall then applies the method in practice to 3 stocks in the summer of 2010 - Apple (AAPL), Cisco (CSCO), and Walmart (WMT).

Overall, I thought the book was a good read for those interested in analyzing their own stocks. A lot of these concepts have been covered before, but McCall's structuring them into a discrete system is very valuable. As he notes himself, successful investing usually involves sticking to a strict discipline and keeping emotion out of the equation. The sections going over what to focus on in each industry and an overview of some basic technical analysis are also extremely useful.

Perhaps the best part of this book are the dozens of resources McCall calls out for assisting investors looking for data. Fundamental data, company due diligence and opinions, commodities data, and technical analysis resources are all provided, many of them free of charge. As a stock researcher, I can testify that one of the biggest roadblocks to analyzing stocks is finding reasonably priced, high quality data, and this book calls out sites that I had not come across before.

A few nitpicks to mention. First, this is a book for serious investors. Implementing the Monopoly Method will take a considerable amount of time and research for each stock. This is not an easy "Magic Formula" for investing. Second, there is no real quantitative support for the Monopoly Method in the book. McCall does not provide any backtested results or even reference his performance at a number of hedge funds to support his strategy.

In summary, if you are serious about analyzing your own stocks, The Monopoly Method will make a nice addition to your investing library. MagicDiligence recommends the book.

Do Not Pass Go - Without Reading This First

Having worked for Wall Street investment firms for almost 25 years, I can tell you that most successful investors are very hesitant to even discuss how they approach investing much less share it in a book. Greg McCall is not only sharing how he has been so successful over the years but he is providing the reader with tools to help them create their own success.

I think you will agree that the money spent on this book will prove to be a wise investment.

About the Author
Born in Burlingame, California, David Saccheri spent the majority of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he worked as an illustrator and conceptual artist in the computer gaming and film industries.

His work can be seen in such films as Pearl Harbor, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars Episode I, the Phantom Menace, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Perfect Storm, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and The Polar Express. His video/computer game credits include Carmen Sandiego, The Prince of Persia, and others.

David has illustrated books and websites, and has taught digital and fine art both privately and at the college level. After moving to Arizona, David turned his creative energy and experience towards writing and began to put into words the story that had been evolving for more than a decade: that of Heather, the Maidens, and Evermore.

A wonderful, suspenseful MUST READ for fantasy fans

This masterful novel will be a delight to readers of any genre who appreciate excitement, suspense, a creative story line, beautiful character development, and unbounded imagination. This is the first book on which I have acted as a "reader", and the experience has been fantastic! The author takes the reader on a thrilling adventure through two very real worlds - and ties them together seemingly without effort. Some of the most beautiful word pictures I have ever seen are sprinkled throughout the book. His characters - Heather and Mollie, and the Bristol House (yes, the house) and Falasha to name a few of my favorites - become as real as your best friends. The reader's look at Evermore is tantalizing, and leaves us with secrets that are yet to be revealed. We NEED and want to have a sequel as soon as possible!

Excitement, thrilling, chilling and sweet

I highly recommend this book. I'm usually not someone who reads fantacy but this is so much more. The characters are real, the mystery is intense, the vivid visual world is a treat for the imagination and it's a total get away from my everyday life. I loved it.

A Spine-Tingling Fantasy Adventure

When David Saccheri asked if I would like to be a reader of the final draft of his epic novel "The Ruins of Evermore: The TimeLight Awakenings", I was slightly apprehensive because fantasy would not be my genre of choice. However, I was curious enough to give it a try, and I am so glad I did. Had I not had an open mind, I would have missed out on meeting a fascinating heroine, Heather, and her best friend, Molly. My preference for real life/reality was not left wanting because the book encompasses the girls' experiences in two worlds....one much like our own, and a parallel fantasy world so vividly described that it effectively succeeded in firmly and convincingly placing a "realist" like me in Evermore with Heather and Molly.

In short order, I was so invested in the girls' and their adventures and experiences, I couldn't wait to read on and didn't want to put it down. This meant that I finished the book too quickly for my liking, and was left wanting more! A sequel is a definite must!
