too much ego

This book was a disappointing review about an officer in Korea who claims to have solved the I Corp communications problems all by himself. What a big ego and he claims he was great buddies with senior officers and Generals. Kept quoting other authors and poetry to try to enhance his great deeds.
Didn't show much as related to my 15 months in Korea near the DMZ in 1964-65. Don't recall any of our officers and our pilots who seemed to have such a big ego.

Punchy Company

Mr. Solstad captures the military in such a way that those of us who did not serve can understand and enjoy. His desire for excellence, shown by his awards, is inspiring. His language is understandable and often funny. An insightful look at our history when things were different and seemed more simple.

As a member of Punchy Company, 1968/1971, there were a few mentions of the guys I hung with and the places where it happened, but this was self serving and disappointing.

An excellent guide to Santa Fe, very strong on history

Joel Stein is a docent at the Palace of Governors and leads tours of Santa Fe, Bandelier National Monument and other nearby points of interest.

His book covers many interesting historical locations and 100 side trips to nearby locations. Throughout, his training in history ensures that you will gain a good understanding of the complexities of this fascinating city -- and have a really good time doing it.

Santa Fe is blessed with a number of excellent guide books for such a small city, and also blessed with a number of up to date short term guides listing current events, new restaurants and much more. For two guidebooks with less history and perhaps more personal interest information check out

Insiders' Guide to Santa Fe, 5th, by Nicky Leach, or

Compass American Guides: Santa Fe, 5th Edition, originally by Lawrence W. Cheek and seamlessly updated by Andrew Collins.

A very good brief guide, perfectly adequate for a two or three day visit to Santa Fe and Taos is Top 10 Santa Fe, by Paul Franklin. Be sure to check the release date; I believe the most current edition was released in 2010.

An absolutely marvelous walking guide to Santa Fe is Walks In Literary Santa Fe: A Guide to Landmarks, Legends and Lore by Barbara Harrelson.

And, if you are a bit more ambitious, the Northern New Mexico Chapter of the Sierra Club has put together a model hiking guide for the region: Day Hikes in the Santa Fe Area, released in 2007. I have obtained and used the most recent edition, released in 2012, the Seventh in this series. It is a significant improvement on the sixth edition, but so far it hasn't been listed by Amazon.

The seventh edition can be obtained at the Chapter by mail or in many local bookstores -- contact information is in the first Comment to my review. (The covers of the two editions are identical except for the edition number in the lower center and the color; the sixth is blue/gray, and the seventh is a pinkish orange.)

This is a book you must have when visiting the City Different. Great historical overview puts everything in context and reviews of historic sites, restaurants and hotels are indispensable. And don't forget to do a walking tour with the author when you're in town!

About the Author
Michael Cantwell, CCIM is a resident of south Florida with his wife and children. This is his first novel. He was raised in New Jersey where he attended Notre Dame High School and later LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA. He is a commercial real estate agent in south Florida and has served as a volunteer on many committees and board of directors in the area. He has also been a Junior Achievement volunteer for many years. He worked as a disk jockey in the south Florida market in the 1980’s.

Good Story But Needs Polish

This engaging story has terrific, well-developed, believable and even inspiring characters, realistic, touching relationships, and nice plotting. I enjoyed the story about the pop/rock music I grew up with; like the author, I admire great songwriting and creativity, not just covering other musicians' work.

The book would benefit tremendously from a good editing job, though, to eliminate grammar and syntax issues, to clean up awkward sentences, to use more action verbs and vivid descriptions. I wanted to fix the punctuation in the worst way!

A Beautiful Piece of Writing

The plot of a novel is like a tree. The trunk is the central idea, or perspective or topic, while the roots are the subplots, gathering nutrients from the soil/characters. It's a rather bizarre metaphor, but the question always guides me: is the novel built like a tree?

"A Beautiful Song" by Michael Cantwell, a self-published ebook, 2011, mirrors the metaphor. The main plot centers on a young musician and his rise to fame. The point-of-view is told, bravely, in the first person. But the first person perspective tone is objective, more than literary, which I appreciated. The novel reads more like a diary, albeit not a personal and flowery one. The prose is, simply, a factual representation of Stu's world during the late 60s into the present time. It's told with a solid and attractively cool voice.

Stuart Patrick Edrich is a young man who loves music and is fascinated by a music store, run by Gordy Davis ("the most famous person I ever met..") Gordy is part music man, part mystic, part teacher, part Father figure. It is Gordy who influences Stu and Stu's father, a stern individual, to give the boy guitar lessons. Gordy has another direction to send Stu as well: to God, intuition and humble thanksgiving for the special musical gift not given to everyone. Gordy says to Stu, for example, "learn Silent Night by our next lesson with no sheet music." It is Gordy who assures the young Stu: "You are on earth for a reason." And the reason comes full circle in the novel, to teach Stu and to teach us.

Soon, Stu learns how to build a song, and then begins to play at local events, until, finally, he is accepted to The Julliard School of Music. Here is where the roots begin to grow. He meets the people who will stay with him all his life. Stu keeps the strong faith, given to him by Gordy. He is a model student, who walks away from the drug culture and takes the exemplary path.

Eventually, after graduation, and with help of his agent, Carl, he starts a rock group, called Dylan James and the Overtures. Stu always liked Bob Dylan and the soul of James Brown, hence the new name Dylan James. With astounding insight, the author speaks through Stu/Dylan to explain the ins-and-outs of the music industry. The classic ups and downs are explained in a very believable manner. I don't know if the author lived in the music world, but his descriptions resonated real to me.

But, the strong faith and courage to hope are soon put to two gigantic tests. This is the pivotal part of the plot, one that brings reality into Stu's world and puts him in a battle between despair and salvation. The final resolution to the tug-of-war battle is the balance of the narrative.

The author is careful not to sugar coat his plot too much. The reader first suspects the world of Stu/Dylan is too dreamy, too filled with Dickensian coincidence, to hold one through to the end of the novel. Then, the great karma hammer comes down and all is changed. Like Dante in Purgatory, the post-glitter Stu must walk through turmoil, rejection and confusion, instead of fame, happiness and success.

To me, it's the careful juxtaposition of these two spinning plates that make the novel fascinating. One wants to read faster, to feel the spiral down of the main character, and how it affects the roots of this existence.

Stuart is a likable character, and the world which he inhabits is of interest to us. But, like the tree and its roots, there is more here than music and life on the road. There are acid tests along the way which can either allow one to grow, or can leave one crushed on the side of that road.

On a personal note, I experienced catharsis to read about a character who, like me, grew up in the Philadelphia/Princeton area, was an altar boy, went to Wildwood, New Jersey for the summer and enjoyed "I Love Lucy" on TV. The rocks groups Stu meets along the way, like Pete Townsend's "The Who" and "The Grateful Dead" were my musical heroes too, while song from The Beatles and Cream, which dot his live performances, were my lullabies as well.

An entertaining read

As an audiophile I must say I really enjoyed this book. It is an engaging read which takes you on a wonderfully crafted journey through a boy's life, his love of music, and the joys and tribulations he reaps due to his dedication to his craft. Stu, a typical suburban boy grows up to be an atypical rock star, Dylan, and along the way deals with all the ins and outs of becoming successful in the music business with his band the Overture. I found myself continuing to read as I eagerly wanted to know what each new chapter in Stu's multifaceted life would bring, including the eventual waning of his fame and career as the music industry changed around him and how he would handle it. This is a wonderful book which sucks you in and leaves you feeling satisfied at the end, having read about a life well lived with purpose and grace.

Donald Williams borrows from the famous Greek philosopher in titling his book, yet it is truly a tour de force covering a wide panoply of topics, as the subtitle indicates. Truth, beauty and numerous concepts are given a fresh look from a classical evangelical perspective. He also gives great insight to two of our mutual mentor/authors (Francis Schaeffer and C. S. Lewis). A couple of my favorite chapters as well are the one on Milton's prophetic anticipation of postmodernism's "socially constructed realities" and the succeeding one, Revenge of the DWEMs, a humorous and insightful debunking of some of the fallacious assumptions of our current elitists. Employing several genres of his craft (including good poetry), he has provided a welcome overview as well as some thought-provoking looks at a number of strategic worldview issues. I highly recommend it.

Thought provoking and fun essays for the devoted

I truly enjoyed this dissection of the Game of Thrones series by Pearson Moore. Since those who are reading ahead are awaiting Book Six, and those who are watching the series are awaiting Season 2, Pearson's discussions are a fantastic way to satisfy your Game of Thrones obsession while you wait. While I didn't agree with all his insights, I found invaluable his discussions on the dire wolf pups, and on the kidnapping of Leana and it's hidden implications. I also thoroughly enjoyed his comparisons of the series to the books. Reading the discussions of how different writers handle the same scene is catnip to me, and I hope he will include more of these insights when the next season rolls around.

I am not much of a writer myself, but I absoloutly loved this book. His commentry on each episode and the POV charectors are amazing. It stirs your mind. I have also read his Season two essays. I enjoyed it so much that I have purchased now the illustrated version and will now reread it now that I finished season two's. Looking forward to Season three og Game of thrones, and pray that he writes again

I thoroughly enjoyed these essays, they provide an excellent analysis of GoT Season One, highly recommended. The essays discussed aspects and themes I didn't even remotely consider when I was watching show, and my appreciation for the TV show increased dramatically as a result. Respect to the Author.

Jeffrey Olsen was raised in Magna, Utah. He graduated from Cyprus High School prior to leaving on a two-year LDS mission to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After completing his mission, he married his high school sweetheart and they moved to Provo while he finished school at BYU. Then it was on to the Physical Therapy Program at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. They loved North Carolina, whether it was strolling the beach in Wilmington, driving through the Smokey Mountains near Asheville, or feeding the ducks in the Duke University Gardens. After graduation, they moved back to Utah to be closer to family, and Jeff had the opportunity to attend school at the University of Utah. Interesting Mormon Fiction

I had searched for Christian Fiction, and this one looked interesting, but I didn't read the description carefully enough, so any confusion is my own fault. The synopsis clearly mentions LDS missions (Latter Day Saints), which should have told me this was a Mormon novel, so the ideas presented about the afterlife are drastically different from Christian teaching. If you are a Christian and are able to get past that, you will probably enjoy the book because it is interesting and well-written, and the values of the author are wholesome and godly. It also gave me a much better understanding of how Mormonism differs from Christianity without having to read boring apologetics. As a Christian, I'm not recommending the book's theology at all, but I'm reviewing the quality of the author's writing style.

The story follows the young widow's grieving process and the younger brother's journey from ambivalence about his faith to a definite decision. Some of it is unrealistic, like where the dead guy's parents are more concerned with comforting their daughter-in-law than they are with their own grief at losing their son, but other than that, the human aspect of the story is believable.There are some unusual characters and some touching and some funny moments, and the ending wrapped things up nicely.Not bad for a first novel.

Fantastic LDS Read!!!

I had a loved one pass away only a few weeks after I read this fictional story and it really helped sooth some of the hurt. In the book she loses her husband in death. He wants to go back to earth and watch over her and the kids......When someone we love passes away it makes sense to me, if we were their priority here, why would that change? He winds up watching over his younger brother but is able to keep an eye on his family as well. His brother gets in trouble over his head and so cool how it all turns out!!! But you have to read to find out!!

This is an intriguing and entertaining read for anyone who believes in life after death.

If you have you ever wondered how inspiration works or what it might be like on the other side of the veil or how angels and demons battle for our souls, you'll enjoy reading Mr. Olsen's debut novel.

"Called to Serve Again" is well written with relateable characters, plausible situations and conflicts as universal as the loss of a loved one and the war between good and evil.

I'm looking forward to the sequel!

This little book was a life saver during my MPA program. It is a nice quick reference companion to the full 6th edition APA manual. I had some great professors who were sticklers for proper APA use.. This book highlights most common needs and helps you quickly find what you need. You will still need a more comprehensive book for obscure or super technical APA stuff.

Doubt there is a more clear, succinct guide to APA citation out there
