About the Author
Jim Fetters grew up watching and recording TV horror host shows on a reel to reel tape recorder starting in 1962. Finding the tapes years later inspired him to start a website, which led to contact from directors, script writers, actors, and the creators of the programs he so enjoyed. He's also written articles and worked as webmaster for Scary Monsters Magazine. Currently he lives in Mountain Home, Idaho and spends his time writing and dreaming when he's not acquiring history from nationally shown TV horror hosts.

Pure Gold for Our Kind!

I grew up in San Diego the same time as the author (he grew up in the SD suburb of Lemon Grove, I grew up in Chula Vista) and we are about the same age, so for that crop of dudes out there just like us who loved all of the horror hosts, Aurora monster models, Famous Monsters magazine, watching Lon Chaney Jr. go through the moonlight change, and toughed-out the creakiest moments of the Universal classics (you get the idea, but you can't count yourself among the crop unless you stuck it out watching 'The Mummy' with Karloff and 'Dracula' with Lugosi, again and again, and again... as well as enjoyed those cheesy "Pizza Man' commercials that ran at 2 a.m.) this book is a treasure.

I am half way through it and loving it. There are loads of informational surprises and I give James huge credit for the research. I never, never thought I'd get to the bottom of who played Ghoulita, find out anything about her or the show (which I thought ran forever but, alas, it only lasted a few months); and Larry "Seymour" Vincent was a god to my brother and I during all three incarnations of his series (with all 3 different stations).

If you're a self-professed and proud horror geek like the rest of us, buy it without question, Fringies. Great work, James.

GREAT DETAIL - WELL WORTH THE PRICE!

I see that this book is also offered in a Kindle e-version. That might be OK for casual reading, but I'd recommend getting the printed version. Much of this 365-page book is packed with detailed reference material that has been sadly lacking in earlier volumes on the subject.

People interested in Southern California and National Horror Hosts from their very beginnings in the early 1950's to today, will love this book. It is a MUST for monsterkids and scary movie rugrats who delighted in staying up late in the 50's and 60's to watch the classic Universal monsters lumbering accross their flickering B&W TV screens.

The Horror Hosts and Hostesses are presented here with numerous photographic illustrations, bits of scripts, movie playlists, TV Guide display ads - even court transcripts (Remember when Ottola Nesmith was sued by Frankenstein actress Mae Clarke?).

Unique and nostalgic

I remember staying up late to watch the horror show hosts come "alive" on TV back in the late 70s. I lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico, but cable TV had just made its appearance, and we got KHJ TV all the way from Los Angeles. Grimsley became my obsession during an impressionable period, and I'm happy to say he and his fellow horror show hosts have stunted my growth and warped my mind ever since. You can barely find any information on this fascinating and now little known (except perhaps Elvira) niche in the history of TV. Thanks so much to the author for going to the trouble to do all this research. A note to him by the way: I remember two you didn't put into the book: One was Simon from Simon's Sanctorum, who was a disembodied head who talked in a rather grand manner. The other was Captain USA, who had little to recommend him and who I barely remember anyway.

Angela Meryl's Book WORKS!!

I followed everything in her book to a T, and just months later, I've booked 2 stunt jobs, and I've been complimented by all the stunt coordinators and veteran stunties about my skills and professionalism. I've also been complimented about how prepared I am. I got everything that I would need in my stunt bag from the list in the book, and I was indeed ready for everything that happened on set. It's hard to get people to tell industry "secrets" that work, but Angela Meryl did just that! From the art of the hustle, to training, to set etiquette, she helped to prepare me for everything that might be involved in a stunt job, and I'm grateful. I can now call myself a stuntwoman.

To late to the game

After reading Ms. Meryl's book, I want to be a stunt woman. After checking my birthday date I'm to late to the game. Once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. All the information she has in the book is very well placed and makes you want to at least try out driving like a stunt person.
All through the book she always talks about how each stunt she did and the way she was feeling. Which made me feel like I could relate to what she was going through at the time. Starting the book off with the Oprah story was awesome. Showing the readers that dreams can come true are shown throughout this book. Even though I will not be s stunt woman, her positive reinforcement has put a fire to try out martial arts. With this book you can use her words in everyday life.

Amazing book! Amazing Lady! An Amazing Life!

After reading this, I'm reminded of a song by the Staple Singers called "I'll Take You There" because that is exactly what Angela Meryl does in this book! She takes you from how she got in the stunt business to begin with, (By being the only one on a set that had a valid driver's license), to the thoughts that were running through her mind when she performed the legendary "Fall" off a four story building to then appear before the "Legend" herself, Oprah Winfrey!

Little did I know that was nowhere near how high she has jumped from before. Try a 110 stories!

The great thing about this book is Angela lays out with her personal feelings included, how anyone who is interested in this line of work (And has some basic skills and a willingness to broaden them), can be a success at it.

The gear you'll need, how and where to meet people in the business and most importantly, how and where you can go to get the training you will need to broaden your chances of success, even down to your resume's, marketing yourself, portfolios and really, leaves no stone unturned.

On a personal note, I met Angela when I was younger and I knew she was star material even then. I had no idea years later that I'd watched her without knowing it in so many of the movies I'd seen.

Anyway, when I was younger my idea of a stunt person was Evel Knievel, perhaps that's because the "Greats" that perform the actual stunts are really not seen. This provides a behind the scenes look at what stunt people do (And what she's done which will amaze you) that I was totally unaware of and although it's a dangerous profession, she spells out all the precautions that need to be taken as well as if it's beyond your skill set, how you have to be honest about that.

In today's world of extreme sports and the things I see on line that I don't want my kids to see, for fear of them trying it, I think this book should be in all the libraries across the country, High Schools and colleges so those that have that "Thrill Seeking" mind set can learn from one of the best how do the incredible, safely or as safely as possible.

About the Author
Loarn Robertson was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He was educated at The Glasgow Academy, Loughborough Colleges and The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Professionally Robertson has held positions as a university professor, clinician and academic book editor. Robertson has a keen interest in history and has self-published two books 'Connections - Robertson 1696-1982' and 'William Frederick Despard of Lacca Manor.' Robertson has also written several short stories and is currently working on an historical novel set in America during the early part of the American Revolution. A sports enthusiast, Robertson was selected to play for the 1964 Scottish Schools Rugby Team vs. English Schools, and for the Scottish Schools Athletics Team in 1963 and again in 1964 when he was team captain. In later years, after moving to the USA, he was a medalist in the 1999, 2003 and 2005 National Senior Olympic Games in throwing events.

A great tale of adventure and self discovery!

Follow Ten around the world from the streets of Barcelona to the deep jungle of the Amazon and all the places in between as he sets out to break down the walls that we've built up around us and show the world that the only way to heal our internal wounds is through the power of love. I guaranteed you'll learn a few things about yourself along the way too.

This is a great first novel from Dziedzic, and I'm looking forward more in the future.

Great first book, keep it up.

Dziedzic weaves myriad philosophies together to form a tremendous basis for how our lives should be lived. As a first time author, he demonstrates the talent of a practiced literary genius. The book traces the life of Ten, a Texan who becomes disenchanted with the American life that most of us live as though we were on train tracks. Ten leaves the U.S. with no direction and meets his future wife. The story that follows has Ten discovering religion through ancient and current means. A terrific read, one that I would recommend to anyone.

Sad, but true

Having spent time on a Nez Perce reservation when I was a teenager, I've always been one of those who rooted for the Indians instead of the cowboys. "Little Big Man" was my favorite movie. Until, of course, "Dances with Wolves" came along. I've probably seen that movie several dozen times by now, and it's just as moving today as it was the first time I saw it. I even bought the book by Michael Blake that was the basis for the movie, and honestly, the book was even better.

The Holy Road is the sequel to "Dances with Wolves." It is just as powerfully written, but of course the reality is that the Sioux were eventually forced onto reservations, and those who refused were hunted down and exterminated. That's history, and of course it makes for a very unhappy, if realistic, ending for this book. Nevertheless, if you want to follow the continuing adventures of Smiles a Lot, Wind in His Hair, Ten Bears, and the rest of the band, it's an engaging and fascinating read. Just be prepared for a serious reality check before it's over.

In depth personalities

I loved "Dances With Wolves" the book and was excited to learn there was a sequel book "The Holy Road". In fact I started reading it immediately when I received it even though I was in the middle of another. "The Holy Road" gives us depth and insight into the life, thoughts and emotions of each character and that of the entire Comanche nation. It was a sad but enjoyable read....I could hardly put it down. This is a keeper for my library. I like to pass books on to others but I'm afraid I would never get this one back!

Worth reading for many reasons

The Holy Road is a beautifully written historical novel. Dances with Wolves was published in 1988, the film was released in 1991. Michael Blake wrote the screenplay to his novel, so it is naturally very faithful to the book, with a few exceptions (mentioned below). Blake took some fifteen years before he could put ink to paper to continue the story, and the sequel was published in 2001. Blake now states in the 2011 reprint (Zova Books), ‘Unfortunately, what took place with all, including John Dunbar and Stands With A Fist, has never been known by the vast majority of American readers.’ This seems incomprehensible, that for some reason the book didn’t reach the readers in 2001. I’ve chosen not to use the book title for the blog – I suspect that perhaps it doesn’t pull in readers. In effect, the Comanche are being asked to take the white man’s holy road, a road they have never travelled.

I hope this new version and publisher put that right, because the story is worth reading for many reasons.

Dances With Wolves is about the Comanche tribes, not the Sioux. Film producer Jim Wilson says in the Illustrated Story of the Film, ‘At first I had Oklahoma and Texas in mind (for filming), because the Indians in Michael’s novel were Comanche and they were indigenous to those areas… It was really the buffalo that pointed us toward South Dakota…’ Here, they found the largest private herd of buffalo in the world – 3,500 head. The added benefit of South Dakota was one of the largest Native American communities in the country, the Sioux. The Holy Road continues with the story of the Comanche.

The ending of the film is not the ending of the book; John Dunbar and Stands With A Fist don’t leave the tribe, but stay with them. The book however ended with the pall of inescapable doom looming on the horizon.

Throughout The Holy Road this doom of inevitability hovers. Yet the characters deflect thoughts of the heartbreak to come. We meet again Smiles A Lot, Ten Bears and Kicking Bird, and their personalities shine just as before. The book begins ten years after the events in Dances With Wolves.

For dramatic and historical reasons, Blake writes with an omniscient point of view and voice, which still transports us into the lost world and hearts and minds of the horse people. His prose is lyrical, and at times poetic, laced with heartache and humour.

Ten Bears is a prominent figure in this book, too. He feels impotent. ‘The Comanche and all they knew would be reduced to dust so fine that it could only be seen in a shaft of light before it settled on the earth.’

This is not the story about Dances With Wolves any more, but about his friends and his adopted tribe. It shows the coming of age of Smiles A Lot, and the confusion of a collision of two cultures through the eyes of Kicking Bird and Ten Bears.

We accompany Ten Bears and Kicking Bird to Washington where they witness the greatness of white man’s ingenuity and his absolute lack of respect for nature – as evinced in the slaughterhouse and the sewage system. While many Comanche agree to go into a reservation, others refuse and continue to fight, notably Wind In His Hair and Dances With Wolves…

The ending is sad, but we knew that before we began the book. Having read the book, however, we are enriched.
