Truly, Deeply Enjoyable

Warning: this novel contains copious violence, one scene of graphic sex and an unhealthy amount of fast food.

This novel fits in the horror genre somewhere between Bret Easton Ellis' classic "American Psycho" and Warren Ellis' immaculate "Crooked Little Vein." Fans of either would not do wrong to purchase it.

The synopsis listed under does a fair job of summarizing the story, but it doesn't let on to how likeable the characters are. The story progresses at a nice pace while still leaving room for humorous exposition. There are differences between the protagonists of "American Psycho" and "Crooked Little Vein" and the unnamed anti-hero of "Truly, Deeply Disturbed." Unlike Patrick Bateman, this killer is not a truly crazed murderer who acts out of psychosis; unlike Michael McGill, this character finds himselves in situations of his own choosing as a result of his own conscious (and meticulous) planning.

This novel does, however, shine on its own merits without comparison. I found the supporting cast of characters to be lifelike and interesting. The narrative style was well-paced, humorous and stylistic without being overly-flourishing. I enjoyed "watching" the protagonist work, which was refreshing to me. Too often, these characters can fall into a "retribution stereotype" that can quickly become boring. By making this character a realistic person, the author was able to deftly avoid the protagonist falling into one of these tiresome categories.

It's a quick read, unfortunately, but well worth the price.

I recommend this to horror fans for the content, but I was surprised at the emotional depth that the supporting characters added. It's as much a story of a man who doesn't know he's lonely opening up to new relationships as much as it is a novel of brutal, bloody murder. Which was nice.

Intelligentleman design

As i could not write a novel, and border on the cusp of even being able to read one, the infinte jest apparent in the vonnegut-wrenching white comedy of Neinaber's latest release precisely fit my flights of fancy. Bordering on just my side of fantasy, and hella short, the read went down like Booker's , and I swear I felt like an Azusa Trooper. That I bandy around these terms shows that the charachter relationships grew on me. I do feel like such flights of fantasy draw a clear line in the sand between acceptable and unacceptable fantasizing, demarcating a moral yet practical line, much like achebe and aesop's fables of lore. Let's hope that this is a first of many so that once again we can sink into the video game culture, fast style read, pop vulture, socio fi breed that suits my post-Elizabethean (Taylor) rennaisance tastes! CONSUME IMMEDIATELY!

I received this book free from the author and as pleasantly surprised!! So disturbing that you have to keep reading! The author draws you in and has you loving the characters, even though you shouldn't. Think Dexter!

For Myself Alone, a stand-alone Austenesque story, is soon to follow. Her most recent project is a contemporary “what if” novel entitled First of Second Chances. Shannon is a life-long resident of the Pacific Northwest. She and her husband live in the log home they built in the countryside thirty-five miles south of Seattle, where she writes and paints in her studio facing Mt. Rainier.

Romance and intrigue follow the Darcys back to Pemberley

What fan of Pride and Prejudice hasn't wondered how Elizabeth and Darcy fared in their first few years of marriage? What kind of adventures would they share, what misfortunes would they encounter? Judging by the percentage of Austenesque novels that are Pride and Prejudice sequels, it's fair to say these thoughts occupy the minds of many. In The Darcys of Pemberley, Shannon Winslow takes the brief outline Jane gave us in the last chapter of her masterpiece and fills in the blank spaces.

When we hear of "The Darcys of Pemberley" our minds automatically think of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. However, we should not forget there was a third Darcy living at Pemberley. Georgiana is not glossed over in Winslow's book. She is 17, nearly 18, and becoming a woman in her own right. She has suitors-yes, more than one-but a gentleman has already won her heart.

I don't think it will spoil anything if I tell you the identity of this man. She is in love with her cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam. However, there are several roadblocks in their way, not the least of which is familial obligation on his side.

Georgiana's story was only one thread woven together in The Darcys of Pemberley. No Pride and Prejudice sequel would be complete without an exploration of Lizzy and Darcy's continuing romance, and Winslow does not disappoint. They are every bit as much in love as you could wish them to be, and it was delightful to read the interchanges between them.

However, secrets and lies are creeping their way into the fabric of Pemberley. Darcy knows something he isn't telling Elizabeth, and she meanwhile has been sworn to secrecy regarding Georgiana's confusing romantic situation. The growing unease between them was one of the major catalysts of the story-and it is also one of my few quibbles with the book.

Without giving away a major plot point, I will say I found it hard to believe Darcy would harbor such doubts about his wife, regardless of the evidence. Even if he did wonder, I feel he would have confronted her right away and asked her to explain what he had seen, rather than keep the information a secret.

That aside, The Darcys of Pemberley gives an excellent view of what life might have been like at Pemberley. Winslow knows Pride and Prejudice inside and out, and this shows in the ease with which she guides the characters through the story. Her writing style is impeccable, with enough echoes of Austen's style for the dialogue to sound right, and enough of her own habits to not feel like an imitation.

Georgiana's story and the intrigues between Elizabeth and Darcy entwined in some interesting and unexpected ways. At times, I wished she had chosen to focus on one for this book and left the other for a second sequel, but that was simply from a desire to see more of the people and situations I enjoyed, rather than any true fault with the storytelling.

I heartily recommend The Darcys of Pemberley to anyone looking for a solid sequel to Pride and Prejudice. Well done, Shannon, on your debut novel.

A great book that can be appreciated on many levels: Highly recommended

Without repeating the summaries of the novel from the other reviews, I recommend this to readers who (1)enjoy good story-telling; 2)enjoy thrillers; 3)like a good story that they can read on the beach or the plane; 4) really like to get into a multi-layered morality tale that raises many complex points about personal morality, responsibility, accountability, loyalty, and betrayal. The characters are riveting and it's one of those books that makes you wonder not only what HAPPENS at the end but how the characters have changed based on the events in the book. It's a great book; check it out!

Grisham fans will enjoy

Fans of John Grisham's novels should add this novel to their To-Be-Read list: Joseph Hayes' When No One in Watching.

The story begins as Blair Van Howe is driving his friend and colleague, Danny Moran, home after a celebration for a big legal victory. Danny is passed out drunk when Blair hits another car, seriously injuring the other driver.

Van Howe uses Danny's phone to call 911, and moves Danny into the driver's seat, then flees the scene. The next day, he is scheduled to announce his candidacy for the U.S. Congress, and this would derail his career, which would make his wife and her politically powerful father angry.

Danny has no idea what happened; the last thing he remembers is drinking in the hotel bar. He knows he has a problem with alcohol, but he has never gotten behind the wheel of a car after drinking.

The rest of this fast-paced novel follows the ascent of Blair Van Howe, whom everyone thinks is the next Golden Boy of politics, and the descent of Danny Moran, who loses his job, his wife, and for awhile his freedom, after the driver of the other car dies.

After Danny's loyal daughter begs her dad to get help, he becomes involved in Alcoholics Anonymous. The author says that his father, an alcoholic who got sober and devoted his life to helping others, was the inspiration for Danny. He clearly understands the life of an alcoholic, as he describes Danny's life:
"Even after nearly ten years of sobriety, Danny still craved routine in his life, and the flexible job hours enabled him to live that way. He made his to-do lists every day and followed them with uncompromising discipline. He drank his soft drinks and ate his snacks precisely in accordance with his schedule."
Hayes adds a dash of ethics to this interesting political thriller, one that fans of John Grisham's novels will enjoy. There are the requisite bad guys hired by the father-in-law, the gruff cop who-can't-forget-this one-case, and the greedy, power hungry wife, but it is Danny Moran who is the stand-out character.

Far-reaching Implications of Ostensible Detective Story

What happens when the two worlds of law enforcement and politics collide? Naturally, a messy business, just as messy as the scenario that forms the opening scenes of When No One Is Watching. Two friends drive home together high on life, the one joy-riding his friend's Porsche, the other passed out cold in the passenger's seat. When a crash occurs and another man is killed, guess who is made to take the blame? Naturally, the latter, who remembers blow all about the incident, apart from having to come to his senses and face the consequences. In a matter of minutes, isn't it just plain ironical how one of your closest buddies can turn into one of your worst nightmares?

When No One Is Watching might appear at first to be a straightforward detective story, but, in fact, has far deeper and more lasting implications. The dramatic irony of the plot, in terms of which we, as readers, know who, in fact, has perpetrated the crime, means that we can view the police investigation of the crime from an omniscient standpoint. The focus, accordingly, is on the interplay between the different characters involved and on the multidimensionality of their psyches rather than on the unraveling of the plot as such. Not that the book is not exciting--it most definitely is, and deeply intriguing, too. The pace of the writing is fluid and fast, engaging the reader from start to finish. The work is also so well written that one can read it in a single sitting--many readers will no doubt feel like sitting up all night reading the novel, so take care when you choose to read it (a weekend would be the best!).

All of the characters, including a child who suffers from Down's Syndrome, are portrayed with empathy and understanding. The compelling tale of how political aspirations can lead to the betrayal of close friendships leads one to question the nature of crime and morality, so that one is left long afterwards thinking about different aspects of the book. When No One Is Watching should also lead one to consider the phenomenon of drunk driving and the impact that it can have on others, especially on innocent bystanders. Wisdom 101

A friend whose judgment I trust strongly recommended that I read this book. When it arrived I opened it to the Contents page. I thought, "Only six rules?" Each chapter is devoted to a rule. Chapter 1, Be Happy. The others were equally broad: Be Nice, Be a Leader, Be Organized, Be a Lifelong Learner, Be Healthy...

At first I was skeptical. What could I possibly learn about being happy in a single chapter? What could I learn about being a leader?

Intrigued, I began reading. What I discovered is that Singer is a terrific writer. He communicates in a clear, conversational style that makes it seem as if author and reader are sitting in a living room chatting. He's a great storyteller. Each chapter is packed with stories, and the stories make his points convincingly. I soon realized that Singer isn't trying to break new ground. He's just focusing on the good stuff.

Having finished the first chapter, I thought, "Yes, if I do these things I have a great chance of being happy."

And so it went all the way through the book. Singer is a student of success and happiness. He's read most of the classics in the self-improvement genre, and he generously shares the best insights from these authors. Reading the book was like taking a short course in having a good life. And to get an A in the course, all I have to do is implement these reminders of good, commonsense advice.

The bottom line: Even if you've been reading books like this all your life, you should read this one as well. It brings all that wisdom back into focus and makes it fresh--in the most entertaining way possible.

A fresh take on living life to the fullest

i've read other "self-improvement" authors such as steven covey, mark victor hansen, etc. and i've even had the opportunity to learn from and interact with mark victor hansen in a small group setting over a 3-day period but what makes david singer's book and approach different (and better) than the others is this: i found david's "six simple rules" so accessible. i followed his approach and it was quick, easy and FUN to dive right in and to rapidly experience results that generated positive change for me. david's writing style is also excellent--fast-paced, enjoyable to read, easy to comprehend and filled with entertaining personal anecdotes and other stories yet packed with effective, easy-to-implement strategies for living life to the fullest. his unique "life is long" philosophy is a fresh take on staying motivated and left me with a feeling of "yes, i can do this easily right now!". i highly recommend this book (and david's blog and free enewsletter) to anyone looking to get the most out of life.

Everybody can learn these simple rules

Over the last 10 years I have found myself purchasing one self help book after another. I have known I wanted better control of my life. I wanted to get more from life, and yes I wanted to be happier. I buy the book I settle in for the read and I get motivated, for about 3 chapters and then I get frustrated and lost. Another failed attempt and getting more from life. Why do I get lost? I start with good intentions but then the book asks me to do more than I can, to make major changes that are more than I am able to make. Instead of helping me to improve, these books make me feel like a failure.

Six Simple Rules For a Better Life is different. It lives up to the name, it is simple. This book is filled with common sense recommendations that are already helping me get more from life and reach for goals that I have wanted to achieve for years. The author doesn't bully you to climb a mountain. Instead you are shown an easy path that gently rises to the top of that same mountain. With each step you get closer than you could ever have gotten mountain climbing.

I not only bought and enjoyed this book for myself, but after reading it I bought another copy for a friend. Her response is I can do this. I can change my life for the better. Everybody can learn these simple rules and improve their life.

But both know how to fight – one in the air, the other on the ground – and fight they will. The situation spins out of control and becomes a battle of personal survival where defeat will result in genocide.

His novels have reached the White House, and are read worldwide, ranging from Japan to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. to Poland. Mr. Herman currently resides and writes in northern California.

Herman's best

Of all the Richard Herman books I have read I believe "The Peacemakers" is one of his best. The story just flows, and of course Herman's knowledge of the air force is obvious.

I've been reading Dale Brown for years and I'm glad to find another author doing the "air action adventure"!
Great plot, plenty of can't put it down action, and of course an ending that was superb.

Another excellent book by Richard Herman

"The Peacemakers" is yet another excellent book by Richard Herman. I have read all of his books at least once! Excellent flying knowledge and political intrigue mixed together well by a writer who understands both very well. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in military flying and international politics!

Quickly becoming another of my favorite authors!

Loving Michael Lewis' work! After reading his first two books centered around the character"Victor" who is my favorite I couldn't wait to read this one. Although not about Victor, it was still an amazing read! Love how the characters lives are interwoven and how they all were so clearly defined characteristically. ALTON and Zeke were the best. Fell in love with them!!!!!
