About the Author
Sammy is the Program Coordinator for the SAFE Streets Outreach Program. Sammy has reached thousands of youth and professionals. Many of the youth experience abuse, abandonment, homelessness, and engage in survival behavior such as sex in exchange for food and shelter. Google Ideas, in association with the Council on Foreign Relations and Tribeca Film Festival invited Sammy to participate in the Summit Against Violent Extremism in Dublin, Ireland June 26 through June 29, 2011. The summit convened over 80 former members of violent, exploitative organizations, from inner-city gangs to right-wing militants to religious extremist groups, all of whom are now actively and publicly working to helping youth find positive alternatives to violent extremism. Sammy presents for Federal and State law enforcements, Adult and Juvenile Department of Corrections, treatment centers, universities, colleges, Sammy graduated with Presidential honors from Gateway Technical College-Racine as the District and College Ambassador. Sammy graduated from Carthage College with a Bachelors of Social Work Degree with a minor in Psychology, Cum Laude. Sammy graduated with a Master of Social Work Degree, Summa Cum Laude from Loyola University-Chicago. He was also awarded An Excellence In Service Award at graduation. In 2010 he was given the Ren Svanoe Youth Leadership Award by the Wisconsin Association for Homeless and Runaway Services in recognition of outstanding dedication working with youth and families over the last ten years. In 2008 Racine Interfaith Coalition recognized Sammy and his wife Denise, for promoting peace in the community. In 2006 Sammy received the Martin Luther King Award from UW-Parkside for Community Service in Racine. In 2005 he was awarded the Hispanic Unsung Hero Award from the Martin Luther King Center in Racine for his work in the community. Rangel worked in corrections during 2004-2008 as a Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor. He also provides mental health treatment at Racine Psychological Services with patients who live with chronic mental illness and/or AODA issues. Fourbears book reading is an essential tool in surviving a life of violence

Reading Fourbears: Myths of forgiveness is not only a profoundly sad story of a young man who endured abuse growing up which contributed to other influencing factor that helped shape his troubled young life and brought him to a violent reality that become the norm.

Through years of hardship, criminal and violent behavior, Sammy found himself compelled to make a drastic change from his way of life. The struggles he had to overcome and endure in his journey out of that violent life is inspiring no matter our background, we can all relate in some way or another because this is a story of life, of our communities and society decaying to the point that for a lot of people, violence is a normal way of life.

Sammy is an amazing example of strength, resiliency, determination, and love for humanity. He is now a leader fighting against the same violent behaviors that once entrapped him. He is fighting hate and violence with love and tolerance...not by words but by actions.

I highly recommend Fourbears for any individual imprisoned by the destruction that violence causes, for the survivors of violence acts, and for the educators and community leaders that play a role in the lives of our youth and at-risk-youth.

This book helps everyone to live a more peaceful and joyful life

The story of Sammy Rangel is marvellous! Some parts of it were shocking indeed, however this highlights even more the miraculous power of forgiveness.
I do recommend this book not only for people who are victims of violence, but for all those, who are hurted in some way by their parents, their relatives, their friends, or by anyone else, and thus deal with problems of forgiving.
The book clearly reckons with all the myths of forgiveness. In this way, I believe, it is a precious tool to live a more peaceful and joyful life.
I loved it. Thank you Sammy!

Great book and story. Worked in the department for years and to see someone really turn their lives around for the better is a nice feeling.

Inspirational And A Call To Action

Stacey Bess, a teacher who taught homeless children at a family shelter, a school with no name, shares about her experience and her love for the students. Not only did she teach them, but they taught her as well about love and what it is like being homeless. This book gives insight into the effects homelessness has on children and challenges the reader to get involved and take action to show love to others and make the world a better place. Stacey Bess was put in a unique teaching situation and rose to the challenge.

Here is a quote that I think sums up her whole point of the book from page 96:

"But we can't impose our own goals, wishes, or help on anyone. We can only teach, support, and love. We give them more opportunities, more choices. Then we love them regardless of the choices they make, hoping that they will learn to make better ones in the future."

I think any teacher would find this book inspiring and anyone who has compassion for the homeless would certainly find this interesting. I loved the movie "Beyond the Blackboard" which is based on this book so had to read the book. At the end of the book, she has an extensive list of different ideas on how people can get more involved by serving others.

About the Author
Maureen Burwell Pollinger is an Ecumenical, Non-Denomination, and Interfaith minister whose specialty lies in creating unique, custom ceremonies for her diverse clientele. For more than twenty-two years Maureen has crafted and officiated wedding ceremonies throughout the New York, Tri-State area and as far afield as Bermuda. Over the years, Maureen has served in many areas of ministering. Nowadays she focuses primarily on her wedding ministry. Originally from Yorkshire, England, she and her husband Doctor Kenneth Pollinger share a home in Nyack, New York. They have just completed the construction of a retreat-home ‘getaway’ in Costa Rica. Excellent Guide

At a complete loss on how to create your own one of a kind marriage ceremony? This is the book you should buy. There are guidelines for each step of a marriage ceremony. The time table provided include several versions of processionals, opening benedictions, vows, bible readings, and final benedictions. This book discussed every religions, cultural and ethnic traditions. It was really helpful with my fiancé. He appears overwhelmed with all the different parts of the ceremony. I went through the book, highlighted what I liked and gave the book to him. What I learned is that my fiancé is a lot more religious than I originally thought. We both created a beautiful intimate religious ceremony that will make our parents proud. I highly recommend this book to anyone is considering a ceremony outside of a church.

About the Author
Howard DeLong received a B.A. in Mathematics from Williams College (1957), and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Princeton University (1960). He taught philosophy at Trinity College (Hartford, CT) from 1960 until his retirement in 1999, and is the author of A Profile of Mathematical Logic (Dover).

An idea that deserves consideration

It was tempting to give this book the highest possible rating in the hope of encouraging more people to read it. It is a scholarly book discussing important issues that deserve serious consideration. In my view, however, it is unnecessarily difficult to read. The author (or a good editor) could have made life easier for readers by relegating a few hundred pages of the text to notes and appendices.

Howard DeLong argues that America's political system falls short of the revolutionary democratic ideals of its founding fathers and suggests how current political practices could be revised to be consistent with those ideals. He proposes that a 'court of common reason' be established to determine the `common reason of society'. The term `court' is used because the proposal involves establishing an advisory jury system, functioning in `a controlled setting typical of a court room with unbiased rules governing the presentation of evidence and arguments'.

The author establishes that America's founding fathers viewed democracy as involving more than just representative government. DeLong's main source of inspiration is a proposal by Thomas Jefferson (in a letter to John Adams) for simultaneous meetings of wards (small political units within each county responsible for schools, police, roads etc.) to determine the 'genuine sense of the people on any required point'.

DeLong suggests that the court of common reason would be assembled by random selection of a substantial number of people (possibly 0.1% of the adult population) using methodology to mirror important population characteristics as accurately as possible. He envisages that the advisory jury would be divided into sub-juries, each consisting of 12 people, before listening to argument and deliberating. He suggests that the common reason of society would be revealed by the decisions of those sub-juries that achieve unanimity.

The author's reason for proposing sub-juries of 12 people is to reduce the danger of groupthink, that he considers likely to pose a greater problem in large gatherings. His suggestion that sub-juries should be required to achieve unanimity for their view to be counted is intended to promote considered judgement. I can see merit in sub-juries small enough to enable all members to participate in the discussion, but the requirement for unanimity may be too strong. As I see it, if 80% of sub-juries had 10 or more members in support of a proposition that would imply strong support, even if, say, only 50% of sub-juries were unanimous in their support.

DeLong suggests that the questions and problems that might be put to advisory juries `are almost endless'. Examples he suggests include tax policy, medical malpractice liability, misleading advertising, pay rates for politicians, safety and environmental regulation, penalties for criminal offences, immigration policy and eminent domain policy. Towards the end of his book he also suggests that advisory juries could have a role in revision of the American constitution.

In my view, a court of common reason would be most likely to be helpful in relation to constitutional issues and other matters concerning the 'rules of the game' of politics. Those are issues on which there seems likely to be potential for greatest benefits from institutional innovations to enable voters to become better-informed and to identify their common interests.

Edmond Caldwell got a literature PhD from Tufts University and then decided he would prefer not to. Since then his fiction has appeared in *West Wind Review*, *Mad Hatters' Review*, *Harp & Altar*, *Acappella Zoo*, *Pear Noir!*, *Lamination Colony*, *Prick of the Spindle*, *DIAGRAM*, *Juked*, and elsewhere. Through this book, Mr. Caldwell has created a new type of fiction. His sprawling but interconnected series of stories is full of literary rebellion. The reader is tossed from suspenseful middle-eastern intrigue to a spontaneously obscene Samuel Beckett script. This is the fiction of Augé and Baudrillard's ilk, at turns blindingly self-aware or blissfully hyperreal. I have never reviewed anything on Amazon before but I feel so indebted to Bill Johnson that I have to give him a review. I went to a big name film school for college and throughout the entire 4 years and thousands of dollars, I never learned more about storytelling then I did reading this 3 dollar kindle book. Bill Johnson really gives you the map to the maze. After 6 years of making movies, I had some idea on what made a story work and what didn't, but Bill Johnson really gives the theoretical groundwork to what makes a story resonate with an audience. Thank You Bill!

Wow! I've had this book (Kindle version) for some time and refer to it constantly because it has so much to offer. It's one of the few books I consider that really helped me understand what it takes to develop and write an effective and powerful story. Bill Johnson really knows how to lay it out and put it all into perspective by revealing the key elements and techniques that go into storytelling by using plenty of examples and literary references.

This book lays bare the essential aspects of storytelling. I've recently published a memoir, "Last Chance to be a Cowboy", but it was purely "by the seat of my pants", intuitive writing. If I had the good fortune of reading Bill Johnson's book first, I would have known how to structure my book in a way that would have pulled readers into my story and compelled them to keep reading.

I also am ordering another copy to send to my son, Sam, a naturally talented writer.

Foreword

Twenty-eight years making short films had convinced me I was well prepared to write a screenplay or a novel. I'd written, produced, and directed almost a hundred films for theatrical release, television, corporate presentations, documentaries, and education, receiving forty-four awards and a grant from the American Film Institute. Yet, as I struggled to write my first novel, I soon floundered and found myself lost in a maze without a map. What I hadn't grasped was how great the leap from a short film to a novel or feature length script.

I began to read everything I could find on writing novels and screen­plays, nearly eighty books altogether. Each focused on pieces of the larger picture, not the whole. All were filtered through the author's own unique perspective, each different enough from the others to create confusion. They wrote as though the essential principals of dramatic writing were too vast for anyone to cover in a single book. However, a handful did come close enough to convince me it was possible. I also had this nagging feeling there was a higher level to storytelling that none of them were discussing, and I sensed that if I didn't understand that, I wasn't going anywhere.

One night in March, 1995, while searching the Writer's Forum on AOL, I came across a series of postings that got my attention. They began, "I would like to open a discussion into story movement, what it is, and how to create it." I read them all, then read them again. Nothing I'd come across before had so clearly cut to the very essence of how to tell a story. Here was someone who understood that higher level for which I aspired and who knew how to teach it.

Though I'd never met him, I offered my help as an editor. Perhaps I could be a sounding board for his ideas, someone to raise questions. I was pleasantly surprised when he responded to my email by accepting my offer. It was the start of a lasting friendship that began my own journey into the heart of storytelling. It would change my writing life forever.

I'd read many a story but never fully understood what was behind the paint on the walls. It was clear that stories worked, but why did the writer choose a particular plot, or set of characters, or locale, or the individual words on the page for that matter? The beauty of what Bill does is contained in the series of steps he led me through, each building on the previous one, until I could see those principals in action in a story I was writing. He even taught me how to go about choosing the right dramatic words--no small feat. For the first time, things began to make sense and my writing began to steadily improve.

As time went by, Bill's personalized style of teaching was an inspiration. I was struck by the fact that this book was written in the same conversational style, one on one, as though Bill were talking to  me, anticipating my questions, even raising issues that stimulated my thinking about the story I was writing, or one that I planned to write. It was clear that from his years of teaching experience that he could anticipate the kinds of questions I might ask, and even anticipate why I asked them. I came to realize that Bill has a unique understanding of what a writer needs to know to become a storyteller and all of that is reflected in this book.

Now, whenever I'm in the midst of writing a story and am uncertain about where it's going or how to get there, this is the book I return to time and again for answers and inspiration.

This is a writer’s bible

Bill Johnson is a master at understanding the how and why of creating characters. In A Story is a Promise & The Spirit of Storytelling Johnson seamlessly pulls together key aspects of story-telling – from premise to promise, dramatic moments and dramatic truths – he gives the reader the necessary techniques to bring their stories into full bloom. Whether you’re stuck on enhancing your dialogue, plot or conflict there is a chapter to aid you in your story creation, recovery, or rescue. And for me, someone who needs examples, he uses plenty of examples and literary references which were most helpful.
This is a writer’s bible, and should be read and re-read until your storytelling is perfection, and as soon as you actually think that, you need to read it again. Love this book.

A Valuable Resource For Writers

Wow! I've had this book (Kindle version) for some time and refer to it constantly because it has so much to offer. Bill Johnson really knows how to lay it out and put it all into perspective by revealing the key elements and techniques that go into storytelling by using plenty of examples and literary references.

I only wish I'd read it before I started writing my first novel. But luckily, many things are fixable so that's what I did and it's made a big difference. Let's face it, it's a long and winding road to publication, but this is one tool you're going to need if you want to break through.

You simply can't go wrong with this book. It's a goldmine of important information you really need to know if you want to infuse your work with all the right stuff. Get it. It's all good.
