"Wows" for "The Therapist"

"The Therapist" is a gripping contemporary novel that chronicles the forbidden relationship between a wealthy Boston socialite and her brilliant, up-and-coming psychoanalyst. Its plot is filled with compelling twists and turns as the protagonists fall in love and dramatic results ensue. I could not put this one down! Brilliantly written and engagine, with a dark undercurrent that kept me riveted until the climactic end!

About the Author
Ian S. Markham was appointed as Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary in August 2007. He completed his Ph.D. at University of Exeter in the United Kingdom where he focused on Christian Ethics. He previously earned an M. Litt. in Philosophy and Ethics from the University of Cambridge and a B.D. in Theology from the University of London. Before being called to Virginia Theological Seminary, Markham served as Dean and Professor of Theology and Ethics at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, and as Visiting Professor of Globalization, Ethics, and Islam at Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. He also served on the faculty of Liverpool Hope University and University of Exeter. Markham is the author and editor of numerous books, including "Against Atheism: Why Dawkins, Hitchens, and Harris Are Fundamentally Wrong"; "Liturgical Life Principles: How Episcopal Worship Can Lead to Healthy and Authentic Living"; "Christ and Culture: Communion After Lambeth, A Theology of Engagement"; "Truth and the Reality of God"; "Do Morals Matter"; "Understanding Christian Doctrine"; and most recently, "An Introduction to Said Nursi: Life, Thought and Writings".

Finally a film win for the family

I've been in the film and media business for 20 years and people are always talking about classic films they love. What Do You Mean You Haven't Seen pulls backs back the curtain and gives you a guide of all the greats.

When I went through the book I found lots of films that I hadn't seen yet and it gave me the framework to share it with my family.

I like how its laid out with families in mind. The comments are great. It's also an awesome way to see how common story lines keep being remade in new cultural context (geeky, I know)

A great resource for family-friendly movie watching!

Two kids, two adults, completely disparate interests in movies! We thought we'd never find films we could watch together that wouldn't have more sex and violence than the kids can handle. And then we found K.C. Brown. This terrific guide to movies that are interesting and entertaining for the whole family has been a revelation. K.C. has pre-screened a fun and funny assortment. The reviews are enjoyable to read, include some great background and history to the film's making, and, as needed, include a "Tricky Bit" section to prepare parents for topics or themes that might require some talking out with the kids. Most of these films are classics, and despite that, there are plenty we adults have not seen. The only danger now is that we'll run out of movies to watch before "What Do You Mean You Haven't Seen TWO" comes out.

This second book in the Alex Charles series has exceeded my expectations. Combining time travel, romance, historical fiction, and mystery, it is a great read! Kim is a gifted author who creates characters that stay with the reader long after the book is finished. It will not take you long to read this book - you will not want to put it down!

A Great Continuation of the Series!

After reading the first installment to this series, Alex Charles: The Evening Oak, I was beyond excited to start this book. I desperately wanted to know the rest of Alex's story and figure out more of her family history. While some questions were answered and a few mysteries were untangled, I was still left dying to know more! Alex Charles: Dreams In Time is a great follow up. The characters develop a bit more, they grow and learn a lot, the events that unravel keep us interested and quite a bit of new questions are formed!

Alex and Joe continue to nurture their relationship during the beginning of this book. Joe tries to learn as much about his niece as possible before he leaves on his final time travel and Alex tries to pump as much time travel information out of Joe. Joe stays just as fun-loving and kind as ever. I am convinced that he would be one of the coolest uncles ever (if my uncles weren't already the best that ever lived!) Alex matures a lot throughout this book and she becomes a lot stronger of a person. She is faced with a bit more drama in the second installment as she decides on major life decisions while also dealing with the emotional turmoil of losing both parents and the knowledge that her uncle will soon be leaving as well. Even though Alex is facing a lot at this time, I love how Joe and her continue to build a strong family bond. However, Joe's time was limited and when he finally did go forth on his final mission, I found myself missing him dearly.

After Joe leaves, Alex is faced with more than any person should have to face. She learns of HUGE family fortunes, messy, confusing family secrets, and she is forced to deal with it all on her own...well of course she has the help of Lilly and Jackson's wonderful family. Even though Alex and I were both sad to see Joe go, she still has a tremendous support system as she prepares for her first time travel. Seeing Alex take every piece of new, earth-shattering information in stride was inspirational. Her strength and determination to make a difference in the past is amazing!

A bit of mystery was added in this story by Kim including another flashback to one of Joe's past time travels. In the time travel we are re-introduced to Joe's true love, Laura. I loved seeing more of Joe's experiences but my gosh, it is making me anxious to read more of the series. I NEED to know how his and Laura's story turns out and how it affects Alex's life.

The most exciting aspect of this book was finally being able to see Alex's first time travel jump! I loved the quirky family she goes to live with and ultimately saves. Tucker and Curtis Lee Blue are funny little boys who were faced with death at an early age. Alex dedicates her first time travel to saving them. While, I did enjoy the time she spent with the family, the end of her stay (which ends up being the conclusion of the second book) with the Blue family ended a bit oddly for me. It seems to wrap up a bit too quickly but that is honestly the only complaint I have about this whole book!

Reading this series has been a joy and as I stated in my review of Kim's first book, her take on time travel is so unique and refreshing. I am crossing my fingers for a third installment; I can't wait to see what happens in Alex's future!

I enjoyed reading the second volume of Kim Reyolds' Alex Charles Time Travel Series. I love the relationships that Alex has formed with some of the other characters, and am interested to see how her relationship with Jackson evolves over the course of time. I think that Alex is a compassionate and loving young woman and can't wait to see if any of the time travel characters reappear in future volumes. I am anticipating the arrival of the third volume of the Alex Charles time travel series.

It seemed like a great idea at first. When Jayne Grey found herself unemployed in April 2009 a sense of relief washed over her. She updated her resume and applied to a couple of jobs online, but truth be told she was in no hurry to brush her teeth before noon. Sure, we were all scared to death at first. That first COBRA bill is a reality check on steroids. Despite the loss of everything material we’d ever accumulated (401K plans, luxury cars and what I like to call “Mc Mansions”), it felt better knowing my colleagues were in the same boat. Besides, I’m not so sure that I would have found the discipline or inner strength to downsize and re-evaluate what truly means most to me in life had I immediately re-entered the workforce. Yes, to me a half-filled glass means it’s time for a refill." So what does one do with their bad ol’ self after applying for every single job on the Internet just short of door-to-door perfume sales? Online dating you say? Funny because that’s exactly what she and all of her single unemployed friends did, for better or for worse. "After sharing some of our collaborative stories about our adventures with online dating and life in general, I can honestly say that very little shocks me any more." Somewhere in the middle of the chaos a promo for "The Office" came on smack in the middle of the nightly news featuring record unemployment. Jayne found herself wondering how many people just like her were watching a show about people at work and yet were about to have their cable shut off? Just plain FUn

A must read for anyone who's ever dated, used a computer, or bought shoes....or used a computer to date or to buy shoes. A seriously entertaining story filled with characters guaranteed to remind you of someone you know...maybe even yourself. With humor and writing style reminiscent of Harlan Coben, this page turner is sure to make even the most jaded soul at least chuckle out loud.

Fun and insightful all the way through

As I started to read FunEmployment, I noticed that hours went by before I could put the book down. I could hardly wait to see what else these characters would be up to. I truly enjoyed the roller coaster rides of human emotions expressed with regard to the characters in this book and can hardly wait for another book from the author to see what is next for our cast of characters.

I've read ALOT of books, covering just about every subject and i have never been so drawn into a book as quickly and completely as i have to Funemployment. Maybe it's where i am in my life journey. Single and wanting to be in a REAL relationship at my age is a very real and sometimes tough reality to swallow. Jane Grey's uncanny and outright hysterical writing style and story telling abilities are refreshing and frankly second to NONE. Excercising her no punches pulled fighting style she takes you thru the ups and downs of her experiences that will have you laughing and dam close to crying with her "in the rearview mirror" glimpses into her daughters innocence and really had me looking right into my own ability to see what TRULY matters in life beyond all the crap we call our working life. She nails the on-line dating "life" to a tee and dam those "Gils" who are screwing it up for us guys who are real and want to meet a woman like Ms. Grey who can't possibly still be single !!! Read this book !!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently I have seen a renewed interest in this type of boat construction. People are rediscovering the advantages of Fuselage style Skin Boats. Fuselage frames boats cost very little to build. A sheet of marine plywood, a lightweight wood such as cedar for the stringers, a few yards of a synthetic fabric for the skin and something to waterproof the skin. Materials for a basic 17' kayak cost around $300. Adding a seat, deck rigging and adjustable footrest would add another $100 to $150 dollars depending on your preferences. For somewhere around $400 you can build a high performance, 30-35 lbs boat. A composite construction canoe or kayak of similar weight would cost thousands of dollars.

A great way to spend some spare time

I suppose nearly everyone who has an interest in kayaking and the people of the Arctic has dreamed of building his or her own boat at some point. I know I have. Over the years, I have collected a small library of skin-on-frame books and am always delighted when a new one comes along that I like enough to add to my shelves. The new book by S. Jeff Horton, Fuselage Frame Boats, A Guide to Building Skin Kayaks and Canoes (The Kudzupatch Inc., paperback, 148 pages, $18.95) certainly fulfills that.
A fuselage frame boat essentially uses the same method of construction as early airplane bodies: a series of graduated frames cut as solid pieces from marine grade plywood with thin wooden stringers to provide shape and rigidity for the body. Horton states, in his introduction, "The style was very popular in the 1950s and 1960s and many boat plans appeared in magazines such as Popular Mechanics and Popular Science." This is not traditional Inuit or Aleut construction, by any means. It is, in fact, the way that many folding kayaks are constructed. Horton has you building light-weight, relatively inexpensive boats quickly to get out on the water as soon as maybe. There is little or no history or philosophical meanderings. Read, build in as little as 100 hours, and paddle!
Horton starts in with a description of terms and a discussion of tools. The latter is one very pleasant surprise to those familiar with other books on building skin-o-frame boats. The intimidatingly huge collection of adzes, draw knives and other esoteric or antique tools (Did you ever try finding any of these at the local hardware? "Go around to the local antique stores and you may have some luck," one clerk advised me.) can be enough to scare off any but the most dedicated traditionalist. Horton's book is obviously designed for boaters whose main concern is to get out on the water, but who would enjoy building their own boat. Like the 1950s magazines he mentions, Horton assumes that anyone with a minimum of tools and some basic skills can build his boats.
The construction process does require the building of a special frame, called the strongback, before work on the boat can begin. This may seem excessive to the eager builder who, steeped in misconceived native lore, thinks that he or she can simply hop in and do it. However, the strongback is essential to an accurate and easy build.
The book includes plans and directions for building two kayaks and a canoe. The plans are in the form of lofting directions, which are a little intimidating at first. They are list of points with offset measurements to define the outlines of the frames. I tested the procedure using a piece of cardboard and found that it was actually quite simple, once I understood the process, which is fully illustrated and explained by Horton. It is a connect-the-dots process, with the numbers indicating the position of each dot on a flat surface, in my case, cardboard. For those uncertain of their own abilities, Horton does offer full-size plans for these and other boats on his website, [..]. He recommends that the frame images be cut out and glued to the plywood before cutting, and I think this is a good idea for lofters, as well. It is much easier to draw the frames on paper, adjust lines and make erasures, than to work directly on the plywood.
Horton's a chapter on rigging (deck lines, etc) includes something I have never seen before, but which should make every do-it-yourselfer's heart swell: instructions on making your own float bags. How great is that?!
In short, I recommend this book highly to anyone who is interested in building a skin-on-frame boat.

Great book for kayak builders

I recently received this book in the mail after a couple weeks of anticipation while it made its way to the east coast of Canada. I sat down and started reading it, and by 1AM that night, I finished it. For a non-fiction book, that speaks volumes on how good it is.

I have about a dozen manuals on kayak construction, a hobby I've been practicing for several years. This is one the best books I own on the subject. I was familiar with Jeff Horton's website, and have reviewed his very helpful how-to videos repeatedly while constructing a kayak for my grandson. I see there are QD links to these videos embedded in the book, a very neat touch.

Jeff's straight forward, humble, down-home approach to both writing and his videos is very enjoyable. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is an experienced builder or is interested in becoming a builder. Making your own kayak is a rewarding experience, and well within the abilities of most people.

Helpful and Informative

I have this and the Morris book. This book is very practical with lots of straightforward advice and explanations. In some ways it is more helpful than the Morris book. The Morris book is wonderful as it explains general boat building and techniques based in historical context. But when it came right down to the tiny details of building my first sof canoe this book was more useful.

I am a competent wood worker but had no prior experience in this sort of build in terms of boat building, steam bending, lashing, and skinning. I am building the Rushton IGO from Dave Gentry's plans (also recommended). I opted to go the steam bent ribs direction instead of the plywood frame, because I think it looks nicer and I wanted to learn steam bending (which turns out to be completely fascinating! Who knew wood turns rubbery).

I will probably build the Vardo kayak from this book next. This book has plans and techniques for kayak and canoe.

Cons: the images are pixelated and difficult to make out the detail. Could be formatted better to differentiate the sections better, like switching back and forth between kayak and canoe.
