Helpful advice that you can put to work in your life right away

When I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. A friend had recommended it to me and I was a bit skeptical--did it contain practical, easy-to-understand advice? I quickly answered my own question after reading just a few pages. I was completely sucked in and could not put it down. It was filled with proactive advice that you could put into practice in your own life, in your own way, right away. The information on Unconscious Limiting Beliefs really spoke to me as I have been struggling with some significant changes in my life. I also loved how the author sprinkled her own stories (as well as those of her clients) throughout the book. Kim's honesty and candor was so refreshing--and powerful. I also appreciated learning so much about different beliefs and practices--it was great to gain access to the author's research and study. This is definitively a book I will return to again and again. Like a good movie, I keep replaying and revisiting her advice and insights. A great book when you are feeling "stuck" or seeking a change of direction.

This one delivers

I know there are a lot of books, programs and courses out there that promise a practical approach to manifestation. And I know there are a lot of people who are frustrated because THEIR idea of practical doesn't quite align with what those books, programs and courses deliver. This one is not only MY idea of practical, it's also a delight to read and includes a link to Kimberly's own Manifestation Matrix recording so that you can have her guiding you through your meditations right from the beginning!

I had Kimberly speak at one of my events last year and, after listening to her, and seeing the response from the audience, I had a hunch that this book would be the one that delivered; a REAL practical approach to "magic and miracles." I scheduled Kimberly to kick off the 3 day event and I could not have made a better choice. Her presentation was, in essence, the contents of this book, and it gave the participants a solid foundation for making use of everything else that was offered during the event.

I've been through the book twice now, but I've been applying the steps since hearing Kimberly speak. It's practical, it's powerful, it's EFFECTIVE. I highly recommend that you take Kimberly's suggestion to use a journal along with several readings of this book to start your own transformational journey.

Get it, read it, do it.

Today would be a good day to begin.

One Step Closer

For anyone who has chosen to take the journey inward to discover their truest, most powerful self, this is the book for you. Once your mind is opened to the idea that we have control over how our lives look and feel, and that what may be holding us back lies within, this book takes you where you need to go! It is immediately apparent that Kim has done the work. What I mean is that not only has she figured out what conscious manifestation is and how it is practiced, but she has studied the works of all that have come before her to help us all digest and interpret the practice. She is masterful at breaking the process down step by step. The exercises we engage in are meaningful and effective, so grab a notebook! She graciously shares her personal experiences, and artful poetry. As if that is not enough, she shares audio to help us understand and feel what meditation is and how it can be performed. This book is not only a relatively quick read, but a useful tool to return to time and time again as we master the material for ourselves. Well done, Kim!

Nice

A nice overview of Dickens and one of his most famous stories. The look also includes a discussion about other Christmas works by Dickens as well as performances of the story. There really isn't anything new here, if you are familiar with Dickens, but the style is engaging and Norris does seem to love his subject. In short, if you like Dickens and have a Kindle, you might want to check this out. You can't beat the price.

Having made a personal tradition of reading A CHRISTMAS CAROL each holiday season for many years, I was delighted to stumble upon this wonderful companion piece. Norris reminds us how Dickens the man informed Dickens the author in an entertaining, accessible style. Highly recommended.

You will be laughing, crying and wanting to learn more about the sport of Mushing and the Iditarod

While on holiday at the Denali National Park, I saw Jeff King's Husky Homestead tour vans picking up folks at my hotel. I didn't know who Jeff King was or what the Husky Homestead tour involved. I thought "mushing" was what you did with potatoes and I couldn't pronounce or spell "Iditarod". This city girl from Atlanta booked the Husky Homestead tour because of my love for God's creation called the Dog.

Be warned! Jeff King's Husky Homestead tour is a classic "bait and hook" scheme! He will "bait" you with cuteness and "hook" you with his storytelling!

I arrived at the Husky Homestead and was immediately given a 3 week old Alaskan Husky to hold. Jeff King got me...right in the heart! I started to melt into a blob. Then, his professional, well-educated and helpful staff joined in to ensure that my "melting" was at maximum level, by telling me the details about how the dogs are cared for and trained. They answered every question I could muster during my "melt".

Then, there was the "Jeff King-Keynote Speaker" seminar. He is a funny storyteller! He had me captivated with his stories about mushing and living in the Denali area that go back to 1975.

I bought his book so I could get a "Selfie" with Jeff King and was not expecting much of the book. I was surprised when I started reading it and found that I couldn't put it down. This book will have you laughing, crying and wanting to learn more about the sport of Mushing and the Iditarod. Jeff King has become my favorite musher!

If you are in the Fairbanks/Denali area...Don't miss the Husky Homestead Tour. Checkout Trip Advisor...5 stars. Get the book..you will enjoy it.

Heartwarming

Superbly written. I visited Husky Homestead on my first trip to Alaska in 2005, but didn't purchase this book until after my second trip this year, when I visited a couple of other kennels and really renewed my interest in the Iditarod. Over the past month I've read 6 books about the great race, and this is one of the best. Great individual stories. Heartwarming. Tear jerking. Great pictures. I would highly recommend this book, as well as Dan Seavey's "The First Great Race" to anyone interested in dogs or the Iditarod.

Love mushing? Then you have to read this story

I bought this for my wife as she is a huge mushing fan and has started to mush, as well. She recently met Mr. King and I thought she might enjoy reading more about him. She read the book to me on a recent trip. Wow, what an impressive career!

The story is well written and descriptive to the point where you can visual exactly what he is telling you. I think he could do well as a fiction writer if he wanted.

Q: South of Bixby Bridge is your first novel. Have you always wanted to be a writer, and how did you get your start?

A: I always dreamed of being a writer, yes. As far back as I can remember I have been interested in people--more precisely, interested in what it would be like to be other people. To see what they see, feel what they feel. Writing allows me to explore that.

Q: You explore some interesting characters in the book, but it's hard not to see similarities between you and your protagonist, Trevor. I'm sure you've heard the saying "Write what you know." Is Trevor like you in any way?

A: There's a Hemingway quote that I love and it goes something like: "All good books have one thing in common - they are truer than if they had actually happened." I believe that for fiction to be compelling, the characters must have flaws. They must have wounds that need healing, lessons that need learning. I certainly have many flaws and I put some of them into Trevor. In that way, the writing was very cathartic, but also very scary.

Q: That leads me to my next question. At the heart of the book is a story about getting sober. How much of that struggle does Trevor share with you?

A: And here I thought I was going to wiggle off the hook by quoting Papa. I guess I did do a lot of research without knowing I was doing research. My background and family of origin are very different from Trevor's, but we do share common struggles. I got sober when I was 29, just like Trevor. When I sat down to write about it, one of the things gnawing at me was this idea of hitting bottom. What if you discover this disease working in you, this thing that wants to destroy you, and what if that discovery is just the beginning? What if you think you've hit rock bottom but then a trap door opens and you plunge into even lower levels of living hell? What if treatment isn't the magic elixir but merely a warning sign you pass on your way down? And so it was for me, and so it is for Trevor.

Q: People have mentioned that you're really telling two stories here. The linier story as Trevor moves through time struggling with two antagonists, his sadistic new mentor Paul and the booze, but also the story of Trevor's childhood as he uncovers secrets too painful to admit. Is that what you intended?

A: Yes. But not by design. The linier story you mention evolved first, but as I wrote deeper, I hit resistance in me, an unwillingness to dig up some long buried bones. I knew then that I needed to go there, that I needed to find some courage, tear open old tombs, and let the light in. I discovered that early wounds, some as early as birth in the case of neglected babies, can scar over without completely healing. And so Trevor had similar wounds festering in him. The idea that these wounds could continue to work in us for a lifetime, motivating our behavior, fascinated me.

Q: Trevor has helpers in this book, including one who helps him afford treatment. Are any of those based on real people in your life?

A: Of course. There have always been helpers in my life. Usually women because they have a patience that goes beyond the masculine. Something from somewhere older. Writing Barbara, the girlfriend's mother, was very emotional for me. I think her character gave Trevor the courage he needed to finally mourn the loss of his mom.

Q: Let's lighten things up a bit and talk about your writing style.

A: Sure. I knew early on that I would write this novel from Trevor's perspective. There really was no other way to tell the story. To understand an addict, you have to be in his or her mind. As I found Trevor's voice, it became clear that he would not always be a reliable narrator--that his denial would work its way into his narration. As he moves through the stages of new sobriety, relapse, denial, self destruction, and ultimately surrender, the style and rhythm of the prose became an instrument to convey his state of mind.

Q: Why break the story into two parts?

A: Because there are two Trevor's--the sober Trevor and the using Trevor. This story is definitely not for the faint of heart. I mean, our protagonist makes some terrible decisions, as addicts do, and he makes them without excuse because of his denial. That can make the reading tough for people unfamiliar with addiction. But it can also help them understand addiction if they're able to suspend judgment and let the characters be human.

Q: You do deal with some rough content but it certainly pays off in the end as Trevor figures out what's really driving him. Switching gears now, I have to ask why you don't use quotation marks?

A:   I do use them, if I'm quoting something, like Hemingway above. I just don't use them for dialogue, at least not in this novel. Fiction writing is storytelling, and, for me, punctuation has no value outside of helping tell the story. A comma means pause, a period means stop. An em dash means take a breath but keep going--this train jumped the tracks but it's still moving. A colon connects things or sets off a list. I'll admit I have no idea what semicolons do. When I first read Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, my mind opened up. I heard everything every character said and my eyes weren't aching from chasing quote marks all over the pages. When I wrote SoBB, the narrative was coming straight from Trevor's mind to the page and it looked silly to have quotation marks there. I also think my screenwriting background prepared me for faster dialogue where it's clear who is saying what. But in the end, it's art. Writers write what works for them, readers read what works for them. 

Q: Well, it's clear what you write works for many readers because South of Bixby Bridge has already had great success. Why do you think your first novel has been received so well?

A: I think when a story is specific enough to the writer, when there is heart and soul in its characters, readers will respond emotionally as many have to SoBB. Almost every day I get messages from readers who are touched by Trevor's story, and I take time to respond to every one. Reading those messages, along with positive reviews, make every minute writing worthwhile.

Q: One last question then. What's next?

A: Lots of people ask for a sequel to South of Bixby Bridge, but I know I'd have to drag Trevor through the mud again and I'm not sure I can do it. Of course, there's always the chance that he turns up on my doorstep some stormy night with a new story to tell. Right now, I'm working on a new novel and outlining a third. I'd like to tell you more, but I'll just say that they're both very different from SoBB, and I think my readers will be pleasantly surprised.

It's pure fantasyland but the author makes it believable.

This is a Kindle book by a brand new writer that is a bargain at its $3.99 price. When I was making up my mind whether to order it or not, I looked at the reviews. Out of 117 reviews, 107 people gave it the highest possible rating. Naturally I was intrigued. And now that I've finished the book in just two days, I can understand what all the praise was about.

The main character is a young man who has trouble with drugs and alcohol. He's lost his house and his girlfriend, , has no money and has just gotten out of rehab. He copes the best way he can, resisting drugs, sleeping in his car and looking for a job. But soon, his life changes. He is given a job in a upscale investment firm by a very wealthy man and his life then takes on what seems to be in a positive direction. He is wined and dined and soon is earning an outrageous amount of big bucks and starts to live a lifestyle that is pure fantasyland. He is back on drugs and alcohol though and is even romancing the rich man's wife. Soon though, things start to fall apart.

The book is extremely fast paced. Something new happens almost every page. Once I started reading I was absolutely hooked. The young man's world became my own and I wallowed in the details of the over-the-top and decadent lifestyles of the characters. There is plenty of glitz and glamour and lots of titillation and the writing is so good that the reader cannot help but identify with the main character. There are twists and turns and lots of turmoil but in the end, things turn out for the best and the book ends on a positive and satisfactory note.

It's rare that a book captures my attention and holds so well. I literally could just not put it down. I am therefore happy to give it one of my highest recommendations.

outstanding debut

I'm going to run out of adjectives to describe this book before I run out of review, but here goes. This is the kind of book that totally captures your imagination. Trevor kept me up all night because I had to see if he could get to his demons before they destroyed him completely. His demons, being alcohol, drugs--anything to help keep the terrifying emotions he keeps buried from surfacing.

This is the story of the pain of addiction--it's a story of what it means to be human. Trevor is the son of an abusive, alcoholic father, and a mother who tries her best to protect her son, and finally dies of cancer early in her son's life. Ryan Winfield gives the reader an up-close-and-person view of what happens when we bury pain so deep that even we can't see it. We can feel something, like the effects of a body in space on a planet that we can't see. We see the planet's wobble so we know something's there, but it's invisible to our eyes because it's too far away.

Trevor's pain so consumes his life until it takes more, and more of any numbing substance to keep it pushed down and out of sight. Fired as a money-manager because of risky behavior with money and his health, Trevor seemingly hits bottom when he nearly dies of an over-dose in a hot tub. After a stint in rehab, paid for by his girl-friend's mother, Trevor leaves still not knowing what his pain is, so of course he finds it all over again. This time he gets a job with a billionaire fund manager who uses Trevor again, only this time in a larger way that finally shows Trevor where bottom is.

Winfield does an excellent job of showing how what we don't bring out of the depths of our subconscious can destroy us, but he does it without any preaching. He does it in a stark and honest way that has to hit home for anyone who's ever used anything to bury a hurt from the past. I love the way Winfield uses his character's car to parallel what's happening to Trevor himself. Just as Trevor was given the gift of his body from his mother, so too was he given the gift of a Porsche. Trevor lives his car at times and even as he has to sell it to live, and then has it taken from him by Paul, the car represents Trevor's body. Life bangs it up, but there are always people to help mend the car, and Trevor himself when he lets them.

This is a brilliant debut from an exciting new author and I'll be waiting anxiously for his next work, though I have no idea how he's going to top South of Bixby Bridge.

This is a very well written book as indicated by the large number off 5-star reviews. The author made me like the main character, Trevor, and that was the only reason I did not stop reading half way through when the content became very graphic. Instead, I kept reading because I wanted to know what happened to Trevor in the end, and I'm glad I did; however, this is a very disturbing book and several days after completing it, I am still haunted by the horrific images. The message of hope and perseverance is a good one and it's worth reading, but the reader should be cautioned about the graphic content. If this becomes a movie, it will be R-rated. I also agree with another reviewer who found the lack of conventional quotation marks to denote conversation frustrating.

One giant plug for his website and I counted ...

Windows Kindle software doesn't allow searching across a book, only across a page.
So manually flipping through the book I counted 9 plugs for his website(s).

The book provides a mish-mash of re-quotes from other peoples work (Chapter 11 , Belsky and Gilovich) and home spun aphorisms. Example, rebalance your investments once a year (don't just set and forget them).

My take ? I did not get any useful information. Disappointing, better still, what a joke the information is, considering the target audience.

How come the good reviews ? What gives ?

I made my loss, I'm moving on. Suggest you move on too.

Rounds out your financial knowledge

Eric Heckman runs his own sophisticated financial advisor practice in San Jose to advise moderately to very high net worth clients in the Silicon Valley. His book takes all the knowledge that he has accumulated over the years and condenses it into an easy-to-read book that can also be used as a valuable reference.

There are thousand books out there that will give you basic financial advice suited for the average person and describe basic financial products, like 401(k)s. But there are very few books out there that cater to somebody who already has made some money and wants to learn the next steps after the basics.

I already know about 401(k)s and Roth IRAs and why I shouldn't max out my credit card. Instead, this book presents all kinds of interesting financial ideas and financial products that I'm not yet an expert in, like index annuities and gas and oil leasing partnerships.

I really liked that the book covered the gamut of different issues, from what financial education initials mean to estate planning to insurance to biggest mistakes that people make. It's practical and really works as a follow-up or companion guide to other more basic advice that you get elsewhere. It's a quick read and the writing style is very good.

I don't really have any criticisms. Eric does have some unusual ideas and some unusual strategies that won't be suitable for some people, maybe a lot of people. You need to use common sense when reading the book to thoroughly understand what Eric is talking about and not run off willy-nilly and blindly buy some product just because it is mentioned in the book. That's not Eric's fault but, if you are a lazy reader and an impulse buyer, this book might hurt you more than it helps.

But, overall, I'm happy that I bought the book. It was well worth the money.

Simply Amazing

To start, I buy a good amount of product off of Amazon and I normally don't write reviews about them (even though i probably should).

Quite frankly, this book deserves more than 5 stars. Lisa Foster went through an arduous process that took her many years and miles of hiking and climbing to create such a fantastic book. The book is organized into sections of the park. Withing those sections you have a total view topographical map, zoomed in topographical maps, locations, marked trails, off-trails, trailheads, individual backcountry campsites, wheelchair accessible paths, scenic lookout points, and much more.

Each location (mountain, waterfall, lake, etc...) is clearly labeled and has a minimum of two paragraphs talking about it. The first paragraph talks about the features and scenery of the location. The second paragraph explains how to get to the trailhead, which path to take, how far you will be hiking, and everything you need to know while on the path.

I have planned an entire 8-day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park using ONLY this book. It has absolutely everything that you need to know to plan your own trip to this beautiful park. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You will not regret it

Comprehensive, but weirdly organized

When hiking in the mountains, one of our essential questions relates to elevation gain: how high is the trail head and how much higher is the destination? Rather than include elevation gain -- and distance -- with the trail descriptions, the author put this key info in an appendix at the back of the book. I've never seen another trail guide do this. When trying to decide which hikes to do, we were constantly flipping back and forth between the descriptions and the appendix; we just started handwriting the elevation and distance next to the descriptions. The book is exhaustive, but not as easy to use as it could have been.

Wearing out the library copy, had to buy my own

This book is incredible in the amount of comprehensive information it contains. I don't know what to say that hasn't been said in other reviews, except to say that yes, MANY of these hikes will get normal people in way over their heads. We have had to turn back from our hikes more often than we have achieved our goals. This is totally normal! Trying routes and destinations that you can't always achieve is part of the awesomeness of hiking, and of RMNP in particular. Without this book we may never have known these amazing places existed.

The best endorsement ever was when a ranger ambled over and asked where we were going that day. I don't want to say the destination because it's uncrowded and we'd like to keep it that way, but he said "I think you should try XX lake instead, it's a pleasant hike". I whipped out this book and started to look up his recommendation and he said "oh, you've got the GOOD book!" and moved on to the next hiking party.

PS. don't go hiking off marked routes without a topo map even with a great book. I would say if you get lost and you don't have a topo map, it's sort of your fault (not the book's).

AWESOME..POWERFUL..LIFE CHANGING

I'm in Love with a Stripper....It Aint what you Think is amazing(tears of joy). I read this book in 2 hours. I had to turn around read it again the next day!! I was so inspired by the words written. It showed me things I needed to change in my life and I made those adjustments IMMEDIATELY!! After making those minor adjustments I begin to see even more thing unfold in my LIFE for the BETTER...
