B. Kim Barnes is the CEO of Barnes & Conti Associates, Inc., of Berkeley, California, an independent learning and organization development firm. Mystery in the corporate world ...

A mystery murder in the corporate world...the fiction debut by the established writer of organizational development and learning literature, Kim Barnes, reads well. For the first time I can truly understand what my lawyer friends felt when reading the best of John Grisham. The true reality of their own work life somehow does not bring the suspense and mystery that could easily be compacted into a page-turner or a movie script. Yet many would agree there is clearly enough in their experiences to share over a glass of wine - in the coziness and privacy of a dinner table.

Like lawyers though, consultants have to leave the most juicy bits out and protect their clients' reputation. That leaves them hiding behind hypotheticals, what-ifs, and thick trade jargon. The real stories will never find their way to the general public, unless someone of the Kim's talent manages to turn them into a piece of fiction. Behind the veil of a murder mystery, many of the professional crowd can recognize themselves, their clients, and some very typical situations - well, short of actual murder, that is.

Like my lawyer friends with Grisham, I cannot shake off my corporate hat when reading something hitting that close to home. I find myself perhaps paying attention to detail too much, carefully scrutinizing for a false note. And I have yet to find one. Call that quest the curse of an insider.

Kim, as most gifted fiction writer would, carefully balances on the border of plausible and thrilling. While making sure there is enough detail to make a compelling story very realistic even to hardcore insiders, she avoids overburdening the audience with the job specifics, putting there just enough to create the context. Achieving that delicate balance turns out to be far harder than it sounds. For some it takes years of thorough research from the outsider's perspective; for others simply years of in-depth insider's experience, to be able to pull the trick off. Kim has found her own formula that works well.

Great quick read

Fun, quick read. Multiple chapters make it easy to stop reading without losing the thread of this story about a sucessful business woman solving two murders at her corporate job in the San Francisco financial district. The heroine struck a cord with me; middle aged, smart, but imperfect. In addition to the unexpected ending, the pace of the story is more realistic than the majority of mysteries in which everything happens in a day rather than in weeks. The bonus is a clear explanation about a corporate professional, an Organization Development Consultant. Read this fascinating mystery in an evening or two or on an airplane.

If you have lived or ever wanted to live in the SF Bay Area, you'll love this book. If you've ever worked in a large organization or know people who do, you'll love this book. If you enjoy funny, smart characters who you can easily identify with, you'll love this book. If you enjoy intelligent mysteries and like to end a book hoping for more, you'll love this one. Kim Barnes has done a great job creating a page-turner with enough detail to bring her characters to life. It's an easy and fun read. I can't wait for the next one.

Unique. Shockingly funny and geniunely hearfelt.

Brandon is an average guy with a less than average life. He's struggling to accept what the future holds for him; a meaningless job, an upcoming marriage he's not sure he wants and disapproving, impending in-laws that constantly remind him that he is not nor never will be good enough for their daughter.

As he attempts to focus on what should be the happiest time of his life, his marriage to Clarissa, Brandon's extremely wealthy yet absent father suddenly reappears, insisting that Brandon accompany him on a spur of the moment trip to Sweden to meet a mysterious man that will supposedly change their lives forever. Although Brandon is reluctant, he gives into his father's demand, prepares himself for the worst and goes to Stockholm. But things don't go as badly as he anticipated... actually, it's quite the opposite. Brandon meets Saga. A beautiful, Swedish woman (obviously not his intended bride) that steals his heart and shows him that there is more to life than just suffering through it.

My Sweet Saga is unique. Witty and genuinely heartfelt. Exciting and emotional. I can honestly say that it has been a long time since a story has impacted me the way this book did. It was written from a guy's POV which produced a truthful and refreshing take on love and life and let me just say this book is beyond hilarious. The author definitely has a brilliant sense of humor. There were so many different parts throughout that had me cracking up... out loud.

Brandon's dialogue is extremely blunt at times, uncensored and brutally honest and perhaps a bit shocking when you first begin reading, but it's one of the main reasons I enjoyed this book so much. I LOVED that I finally got to read a book that focused on love, sex, romance, humor and just life in general, written solely from a guy's perspective. It was very... insightful in my opinion. I mean what woman wouldn't be curious to dive into a man's thoughts and opinions on those topics? I know I certainly was! So if you're looking for a story full of strong and believable characters, a fully relateable plot that will engage you from cover to cover, an exciting journey through the beautiful streets of Stockholm, Sweden, family secrets, a complicated love triangle and some awesome, random top 10 lists, then this book is for you.

An amazing debut novel. I'll be eagerly awaiting more from Brett Sills. Highly recommend.

slow start - great ending

So ... what can you expect from this book ... well firstly I think I should tell you what not to expect. Don't expect a short, quick read (it's a solid 453 pages) and don't expect to be immediately engaged (it took me about 50 pages or so to get really interested). What you can expect is to chuckle - maybe even laugh - often, once you get into the book. You can expect to be set back on your heels at the language and stark descriptions of sex (it gets very crass so be warned). You can also expect to finish reading with a smile and the feeling that the hours spent reading have been well worth it.

Brandon has quite the boring life when we first meet him: a little weird, but boring. Well, as boring as the life of a young Jewish man, engaged to a young Chinese woman and working in an office where he is the token white in a sea of black, can be. Then his lottery jackpot winning Dad shows up and things start to get really wild! Pretty soon Brandon finds himself impersonating a NASA employee with hopes of becoming an astronaut, juggling two fiancee's over two continents and attaining hero status for an act of desperate stupidity. Needless to say, his life is no longer boring!

My feeling is that this is one of those books that readers will either love or hate. It doesn't lend itself to
ambiguous feelings. The language is strong, the characters are strong, the story is strong so the feelings we have, as readers, are likely to be strong. I started out on the dislike side of the fence but, after meeting Dad, moved solidly over to the love side. As the story progressed, the characters grew and developed, which pleased me. Secrets, I had no idea were being held, were revealed, which pleased me. Brandon, especially, managed to surprise me by maturing and taking responsibility for his life and decisions, which also pleased me. What pleased me most of all was the feeling of satisfaction I had as I closed the last page of 'My Sweet Saga'.

Brett Sills has written an amazing debut novel. I, for one, will be watching for more.

An adolescent boy's fantasy world - sexist, racist self indulgent tripe

This is close to, if not, the worst book I have read. I thought it was self indulgent, sexist and racist. I'm sure the author would claim that I have missed the point - that he was trying to make the main character unappealing, but I don't believe it. There is too much time and too much pleasure taken in the denigration of the female characters (apart from the idealised perfection of his love interest) and the pot shots taken at various cultural stereotypes. Either the author does really take pleasure in these comments, or he lacks the skill to pull off dark humour.
I thought that it is no more than an adolescent fantasy, complete with Penthouse letters sex fantasies, heroic rescues, perfect females who for some reason can't help but fall for him and oh so funny cultural commentary - read college-boy snobbery. He tries to put a self-deprecating slant on it all, but it is just not believable. Again I come back to thinking that the author actually thinks that school-boy sexual and racial slurs are actually quite funny and if you get offended you are just too PC. I wasn't offended, I just thought it was crass and lame.
The epiphany at the conclusion was unbelievable and cliched and was more of his "flawed hero" fantasy that the author is convinced that he is. Why did I read it to the end and not put it down? Because i hated it so much i wanted to be able write an honest review of it.

A Q & A with Michelle Madow, the author of Remembrance!

Q: What was your inspiration for Remembrance?
 
A: Remembrance was inspired by Taylor Swift's "Love Story" music video. In the video, Taylor sees a guy while walking through campus, and the moment their eyes connect, the scene flashes to the two of them dancing at a beautiful ball dressed in clothes that appear to be from around the year 1815. After watching the video, the characters and story in Remembrance started to piece together in my mind. I started to write it down, and ended up with a finished novel!
 
Q: How many books will there be in the series?
 
A: Remembrance is the first part of the Transcend Time Saga, which is told in three parts. The second part is a short story called Vengeance, and the third part is the novel that concludes the Saga, Timeless.

Michelle Madow grew up in Baltimore, graduated Rollins College in Orlando, and now lives in Boca Raton, Florida. She wrote her first book in her junior year of college, and has been writing novels since. Some of her favorite things are: reading, pizza, traveling, shopping, time travel, Broadway musicals, and spending time with friends and family. Michelle has toured across America to promote her books and to encourage high school students to embrace reading and writing. Someday, she hopes to travel the world for a year on a cruise ship.

Spectacular!

Such a great book to reread!
I loved the relationship between Elizabeth and Drew even more after reading this book again. This book is full of friendship and romance; it's just a great read.
I really recommended this book this series to anyone who enjoys a cute romance and anyone and everyone who loved Taylor Swift's "Love Story."

I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates reading about time travelling. The way the story unfolds isn't like the other time travelling stories I have read. The author provided the reader just amount of detail to continue to find out more. I am looking forward to the next book.

What This Is About and Why Stan Romanek?

For those readers who find the session transcripts a bit cryptic. This may help understanding the context. IMHO

Stan reminds us he is just a messenger. He is on his own journey. Who's life purpose is to tell everyone truths that have been withheld from humanity for centuries. We are not alone. Our ancestors are a blend of many types of alien DNA. Cross breeding for the benefit of other forces.

There have been what we call Angelic influences also. A higher DNA which would allow humans to understand what we really are. "Ye are God's"

The human mind has the potential of greater things than we could dream of. By our thoughts. Our intentions. There is call it the Power of Prayer. It is real. It means that there is a tipping point in all matters where we as Humans can change the outcome. Change our future. By using the power of our intentions, wishes whatever in a larger group.

Our first step needs to admit and understand that we are not alone. And we have an opportunity to join the greater universe if we choose to. It's not a gift it's an opportunity.

There are billions of other galaxies with billions of planets with billions of other life sources. We are nothing. Our total knowledge is infantile compared to Grandpa for example. We are aware but that's about all.

All our worldly myths have kernels of truth. Great destruction many times over. Previous great civilizations that are gone. All true. We live on a knife edge and our puny civilization could also disappear in an instant. WE need them more than they want us.
Finally the evil Cabal does exist. And has been for around three hundred years or so. Not a large group but so powerful that they control our world. Provoke war, starvation, plague, epidemics, food shortages and whole governments. Ours especially.

They fear us. We are billions they are few. What they fear mostly is the power of our combined thoughts. Our Prayers if you'd like. Our purposeful intent to influence particular events by our minds alone.

There have been one severe beating of Stan by those miserable specimens of military intelligence. All documented, witnessed and police report.

There have been two murder attempts. One by high powered rifle at Stan's home and most recently a vehicle in front of Stan's car, opened the rear door and fired through the windshield of Stan's car. While his wife was also in the car. I think this was early 2012.
So please just read the books and keep an open mind. Stan Romanek is one person. There are thousands of other voices out there dismissing his story. Ask yourself why they even give a damn.

Skeptics say what you will, but I love this book!

I think this book is very good. Regardless if the being dodges questions or repeats itself a bunch of times, it doesn't seem unconvincing. They are light years ahead of us, these beings don't use primitive vocal speech to express or explain themselves. I think that Stan and his circle of people are very brave. This story is just too complex and too convincing for me to believe that it is a hoax. Stan would have to have put in many hours and lots of dollars into all his evidence. The message this book brings is also a very good one and every human being, in my opinion, should read it. If you are interested to learn more about Stan and see more of his photos and videos mentioned in his first book Messages, I strongly suggest you order his IUFOC conference presentation DVD from this site. [...] This DVD also has a little bit of footage of him being taken over by this being in the regression. Which this book is dedicated to.

Serious Implication

The Orion Regressions is highly thought provoking and a difficult book to put down once started. Having read "Messages" and "Answers" prior to this book, I was prepared with a basis for formulating a thoughtful set of considerations. Have been following Stan's account with great interest and subsequently read Lisa's "From the Other Side of the Bed" which adds a further layer of authenticity.

Absolutely Amazing!!

I loved it. I absolutely loved it. This book was written despite the risks involved. That takes a lot of courage. It takes a real man to share those kinds of secrets and to wait for either the praise or the possible condemnation that could come with it. I read this book in 3 hours, couldn't put it down. Honestly, from the first page I was hooked. It's a hard look into a man's life, the truth and realities in it. If you want a raw look into the heart and soul of this brave man, then you must read his book.

On a side note, can't wait for the movie!

A Poorly Written Book With An Inspiring Story

I was wasn't overly impressed with this book. I felt that the story had a ton of potential, but the book was so poorly written that it was hard to follow and it was a bit boring at times. With that being said, I think that Robin is a truly inspiring man and his story should be heard. I hope that his story will touch the lives of those who struggle with the same problems that he once did. I just wish that the book was written a little better to make it more interesting and exciting to read.

About the Author
Ruth Lawson is a zoologist who gained her first degree at Imperial College, London University and her D.Phil from York University, UK. After post graduate research on the tropical parasitic worm that causes schistosomiasis, she emigrated to New Zealand where she spent 10 years studying how hydatid disease spreads and can be controlled. With the birth of her daughter, Kate, she started to teach at the Otago Polytechnic, in Dunedin. Although human and animal anatomy and physiology has been her main teaching focus, she retains a strong interest and teaches courses in parasitology, public health, animal nutrition and pig husbandry. Ruth lives on the Otago Peninsula overlooking the beautiful Otago Harbour where she races her Topper sailing dinghy. She also enjoys tramping, skiing and gardening and has meditated for many years.

Great introduction

I have no idea if this would help someone prepare to be a good, competent vet tech. It is fun reading from my home-schooled, middle-school age child. She enjoys reading it, sharing the material, and feeling like she is prepping to be a vet tech. :)

Ideal handbook for students. Well structured content, simple layout with drawings. Leaves plenty of space for student notes if you want to write into the book. Has bold highlights and headlines to facilitate learning and memorising.
