Truth is wilder than fiction in this fast-paced journey through 80 years of Hollywood mayhem. The lives of many Hollywood celebrities were as dark and twisted as the plots of their noir films; sometimes, they even died in a noir-ish explosion of violence. That mirroring of life in art—or perhaps vice versa—inspires Di Mambro’s book, a journey through celebrity bedlam, from the fatal shooting of director William Desmond Taylor in 1922 to the assassination of actor Robert Blake’s grifter wife Bonnie Lee Bakley in 2001. The author asks: “Could it have been the plots [the stars] played out during the day at the studio that contributed to the sense of drama and roller coaster emotions in their private lives?” Di Mambro has some tough acts to follow, since many of the cases she explores have been the subjects of entire books or lurid TV documentaries, including Taylor’s death, Natalie Wood’s drowning and the demise of Hogan’s Heroes star Bob Crane. But in briskly written chapters, she captures much of the scandal and corruption underlying the glamor of Hollywood, a world in which the studios—with the help of the cops, lawyers and prosecutors they controlled—were often able to stifle scandal at the expense of truth To the author’s credit, she doesn’t rely solely on secondary sources, getting some of her material from her own interviews. “I could have put an ice pick in her eyeball,” Blake confidant John Solari says of Bakley. “I couldn’t stand her.” Di Mambro also finds cruel irony in the stars’ lives. But Hollywood has always had its own dark underbelly, with crime, corruption, and murder among both the lowest and the highest. Journalist and film historian Di Mambro guides readers through a walk on the wild side with tales of strange deaths among the beautiful people, from the unsolved murder of director William Desmond Taylor in 1922 to the mysterious death of "Superman" George Reeves to the messy tragedy of actor Robert Blake and his grifter wife, Bonnie Bakley. A number of stories have been told before (there are even whole books devoted to some), but the author is delightful company and includes the latest information on several cases, including the deaths of Johnny Stompanato, Bob Crane, and Natalie Wood. She ends with Mickey Cohen, the famous mobster and friend of Hollywood; the chapter feels a bit tacked on, but the thread of Mafia involvement that runs through these accounts is just enough to tie it in. About the Author
Dina Di Mambro is a film historian and award winning entertainment writer who has worked as a research consultant for A&E Biography and "E" Entertainment Television documentaries. She started writing for Hollywood Studio Magazine and other publications while still in her teens. As a journalist, she has interviewed such luminaries as Glenn Ford, Shirley MacLaine and Dyan Cannon. As Dina-Marie Kulzer, she authored Television Series Regulars of the Fifties and Sixties in Interview, consisting of twenty-two interviews with classic television stars. It was praised by The TV Collector as "the kind of book that will elate baby-booming TV fans. The author has hand-picked a great bunch of classic television people for conversations about their careers—a handy addition to any nostalgia buff's library." She currently lives in Long Beach, California.

True-crime books are my weakness, and when you add in gossipy true-crime Hollywood stories, I'm hooked good and solid! I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Some of these stories, I had not even read before. From the minute I opened the book until a few hours later, it had my interest and attention. I read many new details and speculations that I'd previously been unaware of.
Unlike many books of this ilk, it has photos to go with each story. Most of the photos I've never seen and it was enjoyable to have them included. As a bonus, I loved the author's retro-inspired photo inside the opening pages, who wouldn't love to have one of these?? Excellent book, well written, and fulfilled my endless appetite for Hollywood-gossip murders and mysteries!

In True Hollywood Noir, Dina Di Mambro covers some of the most fascinating Hollywood deaths and mysteries, giving the facts of each case and offering alternative solutions. Cases go back to the early days of Hollywood and then move through the decades, ending with some of the more recent mysteries with a Hollywood connection.
The cases are a Who's Who of Hollywood. Cases include George Reeve's death (Superman), Natalie Wood, and Robert Blake's wife, Bonnie's death. Other deaths include Gig Young, Bob Crane, Thelma Todd, William Desmond Taylor, Jean Harlow and Thomas H. Ince, who died at the estate of Randolph Hearst. Other chapters detail mysterious deaths that affected Hollywood careers, such as Joan Bennett or Lana Turner and her involvement with Johnny Stompanato.
Each chapter describes the death, covers the news reporting of the event, then gives any alternate possibilities the author found. One example is George Reeves. Most Baby Boomers remember hearing that Superman committed suicide. Di Mambro lays out the case that instead Reeves was very likely murdered, and gives the possible suspects.
This book is recommended for true crime readers, and for those interested in Hollywood actors and actresses, especially in the early days when stars were treated like queens and kings. The book is a quick summary of each case, but points the reader in the direction of cases where they may want to seek out longer works that cover the cases in more detail.

The myths and mysteries of Hollywood

True Hollywood Noir is a fascinating look at some of Hollywood's most intriguing scandals, mysteries and murders over the years, from the silent film era through recent events. Some of the later stories are familiar to most people, while some earlier events are legends from the past, with the facts now so obscured and blurred that the truth will likely never be known. Author Dina Di Mambro has recounted a dozen of the most colorful stories, presenting a fairly balanced look at the known facts and letting the reader reach their own verdicts.
The events depicted in the book took place between 1922-2001. The first story was about actor and director William Desmond Taylor, who was shot to death in 1922. There was no shortage of possible suspects, although no one was ever charged, and the murder is still unsolved. One of the most famous celebrities was actress Jean Harlow, who died of natural causes at age 26 in 1939, but when her husband Paul Bern died with a bullet in his head two months later, a very strange "suicide" note led many to believe he was murdered. The case I remember best was George Reeves' death. "Superman" was a favorite TV show of mine, and it was shocking to think that the popular actor who played Clark Kent/Superman had killed himself. Or did he? The doubts have never been put to rest, and we may never know what happened in Reeves' home that night in 1959. Perhaps the biggest mystery was Natalie Woods' drowning death in 1981. Doubts about the circumstances of her death have lingered for more than thirty years, and the case has recently been reopened.
It's a well written book that summarizes the facts of each mystery and lets the reader form their own opinions. The author captured the flavor of the Hollywood star system that existed for the first half-century or so of moviemaking, an era when actors' and actresses' reputations were vigorously guarded by the studios, when the first call about a death or incident was often to the studio, not the police, and evidence was sometimes tampered with to protect reputations.
Recommended for anyone who's interested in Hollywood history and gossip.
