With gouache illustrations of dogs, people, parks, markets, and cafes that bring Paris to life, the story of Hudson, an adventurous Norwich Terrier who moves to Paris, is as much for dog lovers and Francophiles as it is for kids. Hudson loves the new sights and smells, but when he tries to make friends, an obstacle arises—the dogs only speak French. When his mom suggests going to French class, Hudson discovers other ex-pat dogs are in the same boat. Determined to make friends, he hits the books and things begin to look up; Hudson becomes a Parisian, or rather, a Paris-chien (chien means "dog" in French). Demonstrating a message to children about how to cope with change in their lives, little Hudson's desire to make friends and thrive in his new environment is so strong that he learns a new language. French words that appear in the illustrations are defined in a glossary, so the book also serves as an introduction to learning French. Hudson's successful experience will be a consolation to any child set down in a new school, city, or country.

Review
"A charming and engaging tale of a Norwich Terrier's year in Paris...from homesickness to French lessons to the struggle to make Parisian friends...carries a message for children about how to cope with change in their lives." --ParisVoice.com
“Hudson, a plucky terrier, can’t wait to meet some French dogs while spending a year in Paris. When he finally finds a dog park, an obstacle arises: The dogs only speak French . . . Hudson eventually absorbs the language, thanks to lessons from—who else?—a French poodle . . . The story showcases Mancuso's playful gouache paintings of Paris and its human and canine denizens, and she gives Hudson a bold, amusing narrative voice.” —Publishers Weekly
“A lovely book that made me want to be in Paris again. Mancuso caught the vibe of the city perfectly.” —Bark Magazine

From the Inside Flap
When Hudson, an adventurous Norwich Terrier, moves to Paris, he loves the new sights and smells. But when he tries to make friends, he is surprised to discover that the dogs only speak French.
Little Hudson's desire to make friends and thrive in his new environment is so strong that he learns a new language. Hudson becomes a Parisian, or Paris-Chien, (chien means dog in French).
French words that appear in the illustrations are defined in a glossary, so the book also serves as an introduction to learning French- although Hudson's successful experience will be meaningful to any child set down in any new country, city, or school.
Illustrated with colorful gouache paintings of parks, markets, cafes and dogs, the story will entertain children and adults who like dogs and Paris.
Jackie Clark Mancuso began drawing dogs in Luxembourg Gardens when she was living in Paris. The drawings turned into the paintings that inspired the story of Paris-Chien. Before that she was an art director in New York and the Bay Area. Jackie visits her Parisian friends, human and canine, every chance she can. Paris‑Chien is her first children's book.
Hudson is a real dog. People often stop to tell him he's the cutest dog they've ever seen and ask what kind of dog he is (a Norwich Terrier). Hudson is thrilled to have a book written about him and is already looking forward to another book about his adventures.

Fabulous in Every Way
By rebecca singleton
It would trivialize the worth and appeal of this book to say that people who love Norwich terriers and Paris will love it. Huddie, he canine hero, has the potential character appeal of Madeline or Eloise. The book's storyline is charming and the illustrations are truly special. I had to buy the softcover edition, which worked well as a gift, but I intend to purchase a hardcover edition for myself, when it becomes available, for its potential value as a collectible. The author is truly talented and my instincts as an ex-book editor tell me that she and Huddie have a very bright future.

Absolument charmant
By mrarchiegoodwin
Bien sur. C'est un livre absolument charmant. N'est-ce pas? Such a delightful tale that I have been wagging mine all day. The illustrations are delightful daubs of casualness and the captions just breezy enough to make me want to tag along. Now I want to go shopping with Hudson at L'Eclaireur. And, of course, we will have my favorite ice cream, Creole flavor, on the Isle St Louis at, well, where else? I look forward to the next episode, s'il vous plait.
