NEWLY REVISED EDITION 'Haunted Universe' is a journey into dark realms, an uncompromising presentation of the real cost of Awakening. Where other books have promised that the path to Enlightenment is one of joy, bliss and self discovery, this book makes no such claims. 'Haunted Universe' does not attempt to gloss over, but actually emphasizes what those who embark on the path of Enlightenment must face about themselves and their lives before they dare make an incautious leap into a state that demands a confrontation with humanity's greatest fear-the loss of self.

Review
The audiobook edition of Steven Norquist's 'Haunted Universe' is a rather remarkable piece of work. It boasts excellent production values on both the audio and graphic design ends, but more than that, there's a striking additional power that's imparted to the text by Norquist's verbal presentation of it.
I'm a long-time deep-delver into both of the realms straddled by the book - cosmic horror and nondual spirituality, to be specific - and so it was a fine experience indeed to stumble across it in 2010 in its print edition, and to read the words of a man who, after apparently experiencing a true spiritual awakening of the nondual variety, proceeded to talk about the shift in ways that made him sound like a literal incarnation of one of Thomas Ligotti's gothic mysteriarchs:
"Do you want to one day know what is really going on? Then approach the Ultimate Truth with horror and hatred. That is the only way you can proceed. . . .
The ultimate truth is the fires of hell. A flaming column of destruction. A whirlwind of annihilation. . . .
The universe is filled with happenings with no author, actions with no actor. . . . No one exists or has performed anything, ever. . . . A puppet is dangling. The universe is moving. . . .
A look behind the curtain proves, there is no one there. There never has been."
While reading such things on the printed page was already heady enough, I've now discovered that actually hearing the author speak them aloud in measured tones calmly, intensely, rather detachedly is unexpectedly affecting and, at times, unnerving.
Norquist originally appeared on the contemporary enlightenment-seeking spiritual scene in 2003 with his brief essay , "What is enlightenment, no really, I mean, like what is it?"
"Study of books will not get you there, you need a shock," he wrote. "The easiest way I know is for an enlightened person to talk you into this perspective shift. The best books I have read were the ones that talked you into enlightenment."
Written from a place that could be characterized as equal parts inner stillness (as Eckhart Tolle might say) and the unreverberant blackness of the abyss (as H.P. Lovecraft might say), 'Haunted Universe' is a worthy attempt at achieving that impossible-sounding goal, and in my opinion, the audio edition may represent its most potent incarnation.
--Matt Cardin, author of 'Dark Awakenings
About the Author
In 2002 Steven Norquist experienced that final and irrevocable event known as Awakening. The effects of this experience and the nature of its power were described by Steven a year later in his essay entitled: 'What is Enlightenment, no, I mean really, like what is it?' This challenging essay found wide circulation on the internet where it was praised, debated and understood to be a profoundly clear and direct modern explanation of Enlightenment. In 2010, having lived in the Awakening for 8 years, Steven now offers 'Haunted Universe - The True Knowledge of Enlightenment' a dark work that awakens the emptiness within that we all sense, but fear to acknowledge.

Haunted Universe : Saying it as it truly is...
By D. J. Cocks
I find time and again Haunted Universe states it as it is, and dispels the nonsense the human mind gathers and clings on to each and every day.
I bought a copy of the CD made of the book, as read by the author, and probably find it more powerful than the printed material. I have fragged Steven Norquist's SIG talk, and mix these with chapters 5 - 11 on high rotation on my MP3 player. Listening at work or in walks at lunchtimes, it constantly reminds me of the truth about existence.
More and more there's a space and easiness opening up. Less wasted energy.
And the old patterns where typically a person goes in to bat for their point of view, or defend their sense of self by defending the things 'they' are about (music, political view points, issues of morality/values), are just dying away. And there's more sharpness and rest than ever.
I particularly see the horror in me when I get up in the middle of the night, awaking from some nightmare. But the thing I can spot quickly (and this applies to day to day anxieties as well) is that they're all about 'me'. Yes, my favourite old movie star.. self.
Indeed when doing atma vichara, the way the mind gets you back into the stream of thinking is through resurrecting concerns and dramas to do with 'self'. That's the thing we're always a sucker for. How do salespeople try to build rapport so you'll listen to them - by establishing common ground. The ego does this too, by talking to you about the thing it knows you're a sucker for - yourself.
That's the perennial way it tries to reel you back in and cosy up, by pissing in your ear about the favorite subject of 'me'. And on and on it goes. The moment I see it's happening it shuts down, but then comes back from another angle -the common factor always - being trapped into notions and talk of 'self'. But it's hold is loosening... and I can see it for what it is and how it works now. Rarely does it catch me out being unconscious of it..
Also wish to share with you that Norquist's way of presenting it - ie, his message is the most potent and distilled of anyones.
We all know the way things are, and we all live in denial of it. Humans are all about morality and meaning, whilst the Universe is all about what is. What is is - and it's the lot of humanity to struggle to try to reign it in and bring it under control - but to no avail. Another way to look at it is that we're living in the mdddle of infinity -infinite universe, remember ? So infinite combinations and possibilities. It's our conceit to think we can manage it and bring it under our control, and we go crazy trying.
This book is not about just lying down and being a victim - it's a way of opening our eyes so we can get real - and then deal with things from a real perspective. To label abhorrence as evil and 'the work of the devil' is a form of denial of what is. Norquist has had the guts to not putz around with sweet talk, but to talk the way the universe acts. The universe is answerable to no-one, and what does something which knows nothing of death care for morality. That's not to say it doesn't play fair. 'The universe always plays fair' - Jed McKenna.
I like to listen to eckhart tolle and adyashanti from time to time, as they too have realised no-self, and the ground of being - but I keep coming back to the bluntness and freshness of Steve Norquists message as put together with Thomas Ligotti and Jesús Olmo.
The way I now see things is pretty simple. If our delusions about the nature of existence bear no actual correlation to how things really are, then we're setting ourselves up for a life of ongoing pain and misery by persisting to live in opposition to how things really are. And indeed the sorry state of the human condition would seem to verify that. From my own observation, 'self' seems to be the root cause of it all. Pay attention next time you experience fear and anxiety, and you will see that 'self' is at the heart of it. The fear is totally linked to the personal self (even if it's fear for someone we care about - 'we' care about them.).
The horror of finding out the truth of existance, ie no true personal self is more in terms of having our delusions and dreams about ourselves shattered. But if your day to day experience has been anything like mine, this happens anyway. On an ongoing basis we are shattered and dismantled to varying degrees by life. When the way we react or behave doesn't fall in line with who we believe ourselves to be, we either go into denial or melt-down. If it's the latter, then it's only a matter of time before another self is raised from the ashes, and then the show continues. We adopt this particular world view all the way from our notions of a persistent self after death - ie, 'the soul', to the big personality in the sky - ie, 'God', 'Deities'. The whole mind set is reflected in the way we as humans structure our religions, fall in behind world leaders, and are generally over taken by our worship of personailties from sporting stars, rock stars and movie stars. Everything is reinforcing this notion of 'it's all about a self'.
With the advent of artificial intelligence, and the discovery of stange attractors, it's possible to build self preserving systems that return to particular states of equilibrium. These are in effect simplifications of the human mind, which in reality is nothing more than an endless stream of thoughts which we are conditioned and tricked into believing is 'us'.
The belief in a self is a total waste of time if it's untrue, and life becomes a whole lot easier with nothing to defend. Instead of the fear, you discover a weight has been lifted from you. The only price being - giving up what you think you are. Just because we have consciousness doesn't mean the consciousness is a self or that it belongs to us, as this intelligence could well be the fabric of the universe. If you take the time to sit still and try and find who and what you are, you pretty quickly discover that it's impossible to find. There's nobody home - just an endless stream of thoughts which become more and more absurd until they're seen for what they are. Have you ever noticed the thoughts you have just prior to dropping off to sleep, ie reverie ? We tend to think we're the thoughts we're having - but who's having them, who's watching? Try and find that. Very mysterious stuff indeed.
The amazing thing is that we manage to reduce this all down to the mundanity with which we live our lives, when in fact the whole thing remains unanswerable. Whirling around a star on this planet in the middle of infinity and we still get caught up in 'my boss doesn't appreciate me !'
It was Norquists's efforts to share this truth that finally pipped it all for me - and stopped me struggling to achieve something and 'get' somewhere. It's been enough to get comfortable in a universe where everything is based on shifting sand, and where beliefs and a fixed sense of the order of things get blown away like dust.
I would definitely recommend you read the book, and even more, hear this audio CD Norquist has done of his book, with his own emphasis and intonations.
Freeing, totally freeing..

Powerful Medicine !
By Ronski
This is powerful medicine indeed. The CD nails one into a space and silence that puts the internal dialog of 'me' far into the background. The Haunted Universe is completely uncompromising in its words and the poetic style used seems to sneak by the mind's defences. There is no place for 'me' to hide and it draws one in like the FORCE OF GRAVITY, with nothing to grab to stop the fall......

One of the very best ever created.
By Rod S.
This review is for both the CD and the book. Based on my own experience and the final result that came, the CD and the book form together a complete work, complete expression and complete guide to enlightenment. The CD is not a substitute for the book, but they work together and in different ways to achieve the one and only goal.
I was on the path for eight years and was making really good progress with beginnings of clear seen and may be glimpses of truth for the last half a year. And then I was stuck, slipped back again. I had to search again for anything that can help me moving forward. Started surfing web, found Steven name, went to his site...
I kept saying to myself "There is no observer" and "Consciousness is aware as the universe" almost constantly in the course of several days. It was a perfect answer for any situation or any question that arose. I watched his video several times, printed all essays and read and reread it constantly. Every phrase and thought was a perfect answer for what seemed to holding me back from progress.
It was honesty and genuineness that struck me most. It seemed that nothing could or need to be added to Steven thoughts. I kept working on it for several weeks. After a while, I thought to myself: "What is there in the book that was not already said in his essays or video?" But it also felt that the power of initial impact of Steven site material and the speed of the progress has diminished, and I did not want and could not agree this to happen.
After reading the book for the first time, I said to myself: "This will be the last nail in my coffin". I kept reading it for about a month. There were lines that I literally screamed (not because of fear, but because of hate of fear, and power of words and thoughts). "The Towers came down...", "Do you understand", "All is as it is" ...
Single sentences printed with big black letters on rectangular white background were perfect and beautiful "diamond bullets" to kill illusions. I could not imagine there can be more to it than that. But because of curiosity, because of CD reviews that talked about special influence and silence and because once again it seemed that it was not a fatal impact, I ordered a CD.
It was totally unexpected and seemed to be completely different from the book, almost as if the only common things were the author and the text itself. I could not imagine how Steven could be so calm and quiet while reading what actually was a perfect destruction machine, a nuclear bomb, a scream from Reality. I was listening to it on my way to work and back home, on weekends and tried to reread a book again. It was different now. It got quieter and a little quicker. I spent a lot of time reading each thought at first to let it do it work, but now it was more fluent. I understood that it was my mood, rage, hate that I was putting (or covering) the text and meaning of the book at first reads (which is the way it supposed to be I think). With CD, though, it was speaking, Steven was speaking from the depths of Reality, Truth. So what rage or hate can be found there? What mood? Little by little the CD and the book merged into one thing. It penetrated deep into my mind, as if the thoughts, words and the silence became my thoughts, words and silence. Thoughts kept coming (in exact way as said/written, but more as said, because I could actually hear Steven voice and feel the silence and nothingness that it came from) when an answer, a response, and ultimately when a perfect weapon was needed. These beautiful little dragons that kept an ego and the mind at sleep by their beauty, but are really monsters in disguise, perfect, sophisticated terminators.
Steven work is among the very best that was ever created throughout whole human history.
It is one of the very few honest, complete and genuine works of contemporary enlightening and enlightened literature. I mean it. I feel/know it.
It is truly complete. It covers the whole process and gives all keys and answers (directions) needed. It mergers and completes perfectly with other genuine works. The ability to express so much with so little words is what makes it so invaluable. This is one of its many advantages. It allowed me to cover all the material in very little time whenever needed. The idea to put single sentence on page (or very few) was genius (belongs to Jesus Olmo, as Steven said).
At the end, Steven work did what it was designed to. Finally, some biggest, strongest and the most resilient parts of illusions has been clearly seen and dropped. Clear insights, realizations and understandings of what is really going on have finally occurred. And the best part: the experience of knowing and clear seen. I wish you all only this. To make a little celebration, I went to sea. It was a storm, and beautiful closing lines of Steven book "Waves are rolling in..." kept sounding in my ears.
The process has not stopped. But it is now the process of learning to live a new life, rather than a process of dropping old. And now with the same precision and power Steven work helps me on my way.
Thank you Steven so much!
