A heartfelt book that works with and for your emotions
By R. Werdinger
In this book, Penelope explains how emotions are designed to move through one's body in a brief, safe, orderly direction. Emotions are a natural phenomenon that have a life of their own. Rather than fear them, we can find efficient methods that provide for their recognition, honoring and release. Penelope shows us how to distinguish the bare sensations that our feelings produce from the story that our mind makes about them. She guides the reader, using exercises ("Action Tips" are sprinkled throughout the book), case studies, and her own personable and knowledgeable voice, to tune into the body and its sensations and allow our basic emotions--grief, anger, fear, joy--to take their natural course. We are left with a feeling of well-being which tells us that all is well.
This book is unique in that it is both a self-help manual and a theoretical and intellectual one as well. New findings about how our brains and bodies work are pouring out from laboratories every day. The author captures these insights to help ground and explain her method.
Feelings of bliss and peace after an emotional release are now common with me since I have been taking my Emotional Medicine. It tells me that Penelope is right when she says, "Your body has encoded in it an intention for your well-being." Emotional Medicine Rx shows how our emotions, and the body in which they arise, are wise tools we can trust to take us home.

Loaded with great insights, valuable action tips, and fascinating case studies
By Susan Schenck
I have read dozens of books in this genre and frankly didn't expect to find anything new. But I was pleasantly surprised. Furthermore, I was amazed at how Penelope weaved in concepts familiar to me (from nonduality advaita vedanta teachings, Byron Katie, Vipassana and other traditions) without any religious labels. A person could be an atheist or agnostic and enjoy and benefit from this book.
I already knew about emotional release and have practiced this for years. But the unique information in this book taught me when to let go--when to stop feeling the emotions--as well as how not to get wrapped up in the story, but rather, listen to my body. The author warns: "But be VERY cautious to discern that these emotional waves are truly your body leading you into deeper discharge and not your sly, habitual mind pulling you back into a never-ending story of misery."
The book is filled with inspiring case studies that Penelope worked with over the decades of her practice, and she even gives examples from her own life. Throughout the book are fun and useful "action tips," practical things we can do to further our emotional freedom. The author also cites scientific studies regarding crying and emotions and introduces concepts such as "multimodal awareness." She discusses the difference between a transcending consciousness and the observing mode. Useful advice is provided for enlightened parenting.
Fun facts are also dispersed throughout the book. For example, did you know that before the Industrial Revolution that it was acceptable for both women and men to cry in public? Or that men had less volume in the corpus callosum, making it harder for them to figure out emotional responses in themselves and others?
This book came at a great time for me as I have going through some intense emotional dramas. It is loaded with tools, tips and insights that have helped me.

Intimately Written, Healing & Wise Book
By Hal Zina Bennett
It's wonderful to find a book that connects so intimately with readers, where the author is as deeply concerned about how her words might affect us as she is in delivering her message. She anticipates our hopes and fears, describing wisdom tools to ease our lives while gently prompting us to deepen our self-knowledge. Reading this book is an experience of love.
There's a new generation of self-help books that are "good reads" with intellectual depth and practical applications, but which are not of the quick-fix sort that we've gotten used to over the past few decades. This book is certainly representative of this new direction, a book that makes understanding the complex inner workings of our lives more accessible to us and which provides practicum for improving the emotional, intellectual and spiritual quality of our lives.
Some other books I've recently read and even reviewed, include: Deep Change: Befriending the Unknownby Susan Plummer, and Life Choices: The Teachings of Abortion by Linda Weber. These are clearly representative of this trend, reaching what may well be the next "evolution" of readers.
This new generation of self-help literature probably owes its strength and depth to the generation of quick fix literature that went before it. But it is also true that there's a new willingness on the part of publishers to give readers information that isn't "dumbed down" but explores with considerable enthusiasm the cutting edge knowledge of the neurosciences, as well as highly respected psychological and spiritual research. Books like My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey by Jill Bolten Taylor proved to publishers how deeply interested we readers are in the workings of our brains. Then there is Move into Life: The Nine Essentials for Lifelong Vitality by Anat Baniel, that presents a broad understanding of the relationship between our brains, our subtlest movements and the revitalization of every aspect of our lives.
Judging from other reader reviews I've read, there's a growing number of books in the self-help genre that are aimed at readers who are well-educated, intelligent, insightful--in short, readers who want real substance as well as effective tools and techniques for improving their daily lives. Add Mrs. Andrade's book to that list.
