Great book for Anyone Doing Volume Document Scanning

Anyone considering implementing a high-volume document scanning system for the purpose of automating data capture (applying OMR, OCR, and handprint recognition) from forms should acquire a copy of this book. In addition, if you are already doing high-volume data capture, there is a wealth of knowledge in here about how to improve your system. DMAIC - define, measure, analyze, improve, and control is an acronym espoused by Mr. Paxton. He explains that after carefully choosing and installing your initial system, constant diligence can help you improve its performance going forward.

One of many great and prescient quotes from this book: "As automatic recognition technology continues to progress, human intervention in the handprint data capture process will asymptotically approach zero. I recently suggested something along these lines to a client, who replied that he thought I was pretty nutty.(In the late eighties, I told Kodak's board of directors that traditional photography was getting a tad boring and that electronic photography was bound to garner wide acceptance as technology raced on., and I was told I was pretty nutty back then, too. I'm getting used to it.)"

Mr. Paxton covers a lot of ground, and all of it is based on his extensive experience. He offers some great concrete examples of how automated data capture systems can be optimized. He covers everything from forms design to employing complex statistical measurements and formulas to ensure you are getting the best bang for your buck (ROI). The only drawback for me was that some of the statistical stuff went right over my head, but if you're dealing with a high-volume data capture operation, you probably have someone on staff who can understand that kind of stuff. And, even if you're just starting out small, making a $30 investment in this book will certainly pay huge dividends in the efficiencies you will undoubtedly gain in your operation.

Impossible to put down!

I started leafing through this book, and before I knew it I had read the whole thing. I simply couldn't put it down. Its full of great characters that you can't help but relate to and get wrapped up in. Nothing that happens is predictable, and there's exciement, humor and tragedy in most every chapter. Its hard to believe that this is the author's first effort. Anyone who enjoys good fiction will love this book. And it would make a great movie. Get a copy!

After reading this work, I'm even less certain how the title figures in to the theme. The dueling concepts of Neuro Liguistics and Freemasonry really don't seem to have any common ground... unless I suppose one belongs to a lodge full of men he does not understand or does not trust. This would seem, however, to be quite antithetical to freemasonry. The topics of Alchemy and Gnosis seem rather glossed over and given up more as teasers than as true studies of this author. Freemasons are encouraged to be followers of the Arts & Sciences. That being said, "another book about freemasonry" is not what I would recommend to a new mason or even an older one looking for more light. There are plenty of classic studies by true masters of literature/philosophy/science that I would easily recommend first to a brother. A sexy, catchy title does not make up for poor grammar and elusive logic.

Overall it's a rather simplified disjointed portrayal of the craft with numerous borrowed concepts of seemingly unrelated origin. There is little doubt, Porter has a dedicated following judging by comments finding this to be nothing short of one of the seminal works of freemasonry in our time. Unfortunately all the 5 star ratings in the world can't make this book a better read.

Manipulative Book: Hook, Line, and Sinker

This book comes at freemasonry with some very clever, intelligent theories: but most are nothing more than theories while a few of the "angles" are pure fantasies. Personally, I enjoy entertaining just about any theory no matter how crazy it may be because it sharpens the ol' critical thinking skills while allowing the possibility of learning something ground-breakingingly new. Sadly though, after I'd read about 80% of the book, the illusion of scholarly study of "what if this meant that" and "what if this has that effect on the human psyche" (what in hindsight was nothing more than bait) turned into very clear, and rather unfounded, venomous attacks (the switch) on a fraternity that the author either has zero real knowledge of (but lots of fantasies about) or has simply and grossly misunderstood what's what. Because of the bait and switch technique, it is clear in my mind that this book was never meant to consider an intellectual discussion but rather the whole way through getting things wrong in order to serve as a burn book. While I earnestly seek to give praise to all authors (no book is an easy feat), the manipulation that is the central device of this book is unfair to readers and we should beware.

Of course, part of what any type of symbolism serves as a mirror to what the observer sees (or wants to see, or needs to see) about himself or herself. Perhaps this book serves best as that type of mirror than an honest attempt to explore ideas and find new meanings?

Just Not For Me

I have no interest in finishing this book, which says a lot. I love the subject matter, but it's just not scholarly with such a loose narrative being so solidly asserted. It's chiseling off the edges of a square to fit a round hole. I know all about history, esoterica, personality types, linguistics, and of course, am a Freemason, but the writing is a far-reaching and pretentious over-simplification to the point I find it hard to believe the author uses his theories to practical effect in the fields he claims.

Perhaps I'm just not in the target audience. I am sure the New Age types who are eager to play with patterns in the noise will relish it -- and in that sense it is as good as any other intellectually entertaining means of speculation and contemplation -- but it just doesn't belong in my library. Sorry, brother. I respect your ideas and eagerness to share them by writing a book, but to pose them as some sort of coherent science (albeit not overtly by name) could be judged as a bit dishonest, even if your subjective experience is otherwise.

A lucid look at science and religion

Jim Groves readily admits that we live in a world based in large part on science, with all the technology that surrounds us in our daily lives. However, he takes a look into the newer science of quantum mechanics and considers how this leaves room for free choice and even God.

I have read similar books, specifically God Theory, The: Universes, Zero-Point Fields, and What's Behind It All that discuss this issue from a more scientific viewpoint. Jim explains the science well, but does it in terms that are accessible to everyday people.

In full disclosure, Jim Groves was a colleague of mine at Microsoft while he was working on this book. He lives in Washington and I am in Arizona, but on the few occassions that we had a chance to chat, we discussed our common interest in science and religion.

I really appreciate Jim's thoughful work. He has even thrown in a bit of humor here and there, which makes the book more enjoyable to read. The book should be relatively easy to read, yet cause you to stop and think.

He is an NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) certified personal trainer and AFPA certified nutrition t and weight management consultant. He has written articles for the LA Times, Baltimore Sun and Forbes Magazine and has been featured in Men's Exercise. A great collection of common misconceptions

Bad health and fitness advice is everywhere these days. You can't trust the magazines because they're just there to sell you products. You can't trust the trainers because they don't actually have to know much to get their license. You can't trust the Internet forums because they're full of broscience and general idiocy. It's quite hard to find the actual scientific truths amongst all the exaggerated crap, but Maik does a very good job of it in this book.

Whether you're new to training or experienced, you'll enjoy this book. I've been lifting for nearly a decade and consider myself fairly educated in the field and I clarified quite a few things. I also recommend Bigger Leaner Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body (The Lean Muscle Series)--one of the better overall health and fitness books that I've read in a while.

Just what I needed.

I have been working out for the last couple of years regularly, watching what I eat, etc. I have made great strides in losing weight and getting into shape. I consider myself a bit of a health and fitness nut, so I do a lot of reading and reaching out to people / trainers for different workout routines and advice, and often hear conflicting information about what works best. It's so great to come across this book and finally have everything people hear put out in the open and critiqued in an accurate and detailed manner. I feel like already I am pushing through this "rut" I seemed to have been stuck in for the last few months. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to continue getting into shape or to work through the plateaus, as well as to dispell a lot of common misperceptions that are out there in this industry. Maik, thank you for writing this book!

His motto is `Anyone can be in shape!' and that is what this fine book is all about.

Wiedenbach's book is about individual empowerment. In his words, we don't need an expensive personal trainer or fancy machine, just dedication, basic equipment, and the solid scientifically based information he offers in this book.
He attacks myths such as Weight training to get big, Cardio to get lean; cutting exercises, bulking exercises; importance of number of reps; which supplements fight cellulite; are there any supplements worth buying?; the best exercise for the abs is not the crunch!

Maik's well written and well designed book is a must for frustrated exercise advocates. The book is POD at Createspace so it likely will be available here on Amazon.com soon. It is a winner. Grady Harp, May 12

Powerful... heartbreaking... Inspiring

I know the man in question. This book is a "powerful" read but it is not for the faint of heart. It deals with real issues in a real, honest and blunt way. It's amazing what God can do in a person's life. If you've ever asked God why was I born... you need to read book!

Awesome Read

I had the pleasure of meeting David not long ago. He told me about his book and I purchased one thinking it would be just another local town story that didn't amount to much. I have to say, "BOY WAS I WRONG!". This is an amazing story of a man's personal triumph over a harsh and cruel life. The road for this man has been worse than rough yet he manages to triumph on a daily basis! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! Be ready to be shocked, happy, sad, and angry!

Inspirational and uplifting.....a must read.

I was very fortunate to attend one of Mr. Wermuths speaking engagements recently. I was intrigued by how he seemed to overcome his child abuse and blindness. I purchased his book and read it the next evening. I couldn't put it down and finished it before going to bed. I highly recommend this book to parents, the disabled and to those that enjoy reading an inspirational book!! I have purchased the next book, David you are blind and anxiously awaiting for it to come in the mail!!!
