Truly touching

I never knew Brandon. But for the last yr Iv been dating his good friend. I have learned so much about him! I just finished the book. It was very moving (there were a few time I had to stop reading because I got emotional) It is well written and can tell it was written in love, and the kind of love only a mother can give. Thank you Erin for sharring his story

Heart wrenching

I have been a friend of the family for 30 years and like many was shocked to hear of Brandon's death. Erin has poured her heart and very honest, raw feelings into this book. No parent should ever have to go through what the Whites' experienced. Her strength in retelling the story is amazing. Brandon was a guardian angel to many and still is.

Beautiful Story, Great Read

This is a really great read. This gives you just a little insight as to what goes on in the life of a mother who has just lost her child. It was written from the heart. You can tell that from the amount of tissues I went through reading this book, so keep a box at hand. This is more than a true story of loss, this is a first hand account from a mother's painful perspective, one that you can not even come close to imagining. There is so much love, loss, and friendship demonstrated here. This just goes to show that once again people are human and we do have a lot of love in our hearts to give and we do give it freely and in an over abundance. Thank you for sharing this painful part of your life Mama White. I love you and the whole White Family!! And I'm sorry to the ONE and ONLY person, from South Africa, that did not enjoy the book. The truth is hard to handle and some people do not have the capacity in their heart to understand the pain and courage it took to write this and put it out there for the world to read, so you are forgiven for your less than appropriate comment.

About the Author
Tony Jones, M.Div. (Fuller Theological Seminary), Ph.D. (Princeton Theological Seminary) is the theologian-in-residence at Solomon’s Porch in Minneapolis. He has written many books on spirituality, ministry, and the emerging church movement, including The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier. Tony has worked at several churches, a mission agency, and served as the national coordinator of Emergent Village for several years. Currently, he is a writer and small business owner, running events and social media training for church leaders. Tony lives in Edina, Minnesota with his wife and three children.

A Much Needed In-Depth Study of the Emerging Church

I just finished the book today and have to say that I am very impressed with Jones' latest work. A "lightly amended version" of his recent doctoral dissertation, the bibliography reads like a who's who of postmodern scholarship. The first chapter in particular goes in depth in outlining the variety of intellectual property from which Jones draws to underpin his research into the Emerging Church Movement (ECM). It is not a light read by any stretch of the imagination. Acknowledging this, Jones admits that the dissertation style is not his favorite, and jokingly offers the reader forgiveness for "skipping the sections that don't interest you."

At the core of the book is Jones' own study of the ECM. He performed research into eight leading churches within the movement, including his home church of Solomon's Porch in Minnesota (founded by Doug Pagitt), Cedar Ridge Community Church in Maryland (founded by Brian McLaren), and Vintage Faith Church in California (founded by Dan Kimball). From both the quantitative and qualitative data he obtained through his research, Jones identifies four concrete practices common to all the studied churches: Communion, Worship, Preaching, and Community. He also identifies five practices of virtue: Hospitality, Theology, Creating Art, Priesthood of All Believers, and Sacred Space. Jones sees relationality as the "binding characteristic" of these practices, and turns to the "relational ecclesiology" of Jurgen Moltmann as a means for bringing theological understanding to these practices.

And for me, this is where the book shines. As a founding leader within the ECM himself, Jones readily admits that the theology of the ECM is not well articulated. But he understands that the longevity of the movement is dependent on the existence of "thorough and robust theological reflection". I see this book as Jones' attempt to begin this reflection for the movement, by taking a studied look at the practices that exist within it, and seeking to draw theological conclusions from them. (He relies heavily on Moltmann for this, devoting an entire chapter to his theology. But Jones has criticism for Moltmann as well, and does not turn to him exclusively.) In my opinion this is a much needed course of action, and I am thankful that Jones has begun this process. It will be interesting to see if the ECM can indeed take some firm theological stands on a larger than local basis while still practicing a local communal hermeneutic. Its continued existence may depend on it.

As a side note, the book also includes a wonderful short history of the Emerging Church Movement. This historical synopsis, along with the in-depth study of the core churches currently leading the movement, is enough for me to recommend the book to anyone who is even remotely interested in the ECM. Feel free to skip the parts that don't interest you.

A Brilliant Study of the Emerging Church Movement

If you are new to Jones' work or the emerging church movement, check out his previous book "The New Christians." But if you want to gain an even deeper understanding of the ECM, pick up "The Church Is Flat." Here, Jones writes less as a participant in the ECM and more as an academic theologian in order to explain the history, practices, and theology of the movement. The book is a lightly emended version of his doctoral dissertation, providing an excellent sociological analysis of the ECM with an extensive bibliography. Additionally, Jones critically engages one of the most important theologians of the last fifty years, Jürgen Moltmann to develop a more robust ecclesiology for the ECM.

While this is not a book aimed at a popular-level audience as his previous books have been, Jones has managed to write a scholarly book that reads remarkably well. He also works hard to remain aware of his own favorable bias towards the ECM in order to facilitate a more objective study of the movement - an effort that I believe paid off in the end. Indeed, I would argue that Jones' "The Church is Flat" is the new go-to book for understanding the past, present, and future of the emerging church movement. This is an exceptionally smart book that demands equally serious attention from participants, sympathizers, and critics of the ECM.

A central part of the book is a study of eight emerging congregations, involving interviews with pastors and laypersons, as well as Jones' analysis of the relational practices and theological intuitions that are common to the movement. For the ECM, relationality is absolutely central - thus its strong emphasis on `friendship.' Jones describes the concentration of the book as "a theological treatment of the relational nature of the [ECM]." He points out that there is no comparable book on the ECM that focuses on this "key component of the practices that animate these congregations."

The final chapters of the book deal with Moltmann's ecclesiology and Jones' own theological suggestions for the ECM. He points to the ecclesiological importance of Moltmann's social Trinity and panentheism. The social Trinity encourages a radically relational, more egalitarian model of community by serving as a measure of all Christian practice. Panentheism grounds the ECM's rejection of the sacred/secular divide: `de-sacralizing' the church while `re-sacralizing' the world. Jones writes, "By believing that God's presence is in all things, congregation members are encouraged to recognize that presence as they go about their daily lives...the church is thus no more or less important than...other institutions." He calls for ECM practices that "embody panentheism." One way this can work out is in interreligious dialogue and friendship, something Jones recognizes must become a more central practice of the ECM.

At the end of the book, Jones asserts that the ECM must engage in more serious theological reflection on practices in order to remain a vibrant movement. It needs more `traditional intellectuals' if it is to "develop the intellectual backing needed to sustain it as it ages and, most likely institutionalizes." In fact, Jones thinks it highly unlikely that the ECM will be able to avoid institutionalizing. If it is to avoid the many problems involved in such a process, the ECM must embrace a radically relational ecclesiology now - which is exactly what Jones has developed in this important work.

Helpful look at Emergent Church

Tony Jones writes about the Emergent Church and its understanding of the church (ecclesiology) from the inside. He was among the founders of this movement and served as executive director of Emergent Village. This book is his unedited Princeton Ph.D. dissertation in practical theology. It reads like a dissertation, which means that it has a lot of apparatus that will be of interest to scholars, but perhaps not others. Still, there is nothing like it out there.

He looks at eight emergent congregations, some of which are connected to denominations and others are not. He shares their vision and seeks to understand them in light of the writings of theologian Jurgen Moltmann, who you might call Tony's theological muse. This isn't an uncritical look at the movement or at Moltmann -- that's the benefit of a doctoral project, one's mentor will push you to look at things critically.

In any case, if you are interested in the emergent church movement this is a most helpful book.

I have been a Salon owner for over 35 years and have had 5 salons in the past. Ready Set Go is the BIBLE SALON BOOK to read and follow if you are passionate about our industry,the guidelines and suggestions are simple enough for my 4 year old granddaughter to understand,if you do not get it then I suggest you not pursue the business. This book should be taught in the schools because the more you know the better you become the Boss of your chair and also perform as a team! This book will save you time as well as costly mistakes and will open the window of better business choices. The salon business goes thru many seasons and this book will feed and clothe you in a simple and professional but visual manner.This book provides the formulas,layouts and guidelines in relationship to your mentor,banker,designer,business partner and mastermind team.Rmember without doubt READY SET GO should be the first investment you make if not it will be your first business mistake.God Bless, Lets keep this series going? Now you can own your own business!

My daughter has been working in the Hair Salon buinsess for almost 8 years. She is ambitious and loves what she does but hasn't been happy working for someone. Although she has the "get up and go" she didn't have the knowledge or savy to do it herself. We bought this book for her in hopes that it would propel her into her own business....it worked!
She now has six employees and is tasting the fruits of her labor. Thanks Jeff and Eric!!!

whowever plans on reading heilman and friedmans book, (which i strongly suggest they do not) MUST read this book together with it.
it debunks myths and fake legends of a giant among men, and proves the lack of scholarship, intellectual honesty and (deliberate) shallow research of the authors.

Amazing critique of Heilman and Friedman; amateurs with an agenda. Next time at least do some basic research.
Their account of the Rebbe's early years is especially juvenile considering there are dozens of works from the Rebbe himself from back then that they intentionally ignored.

A GREAT Read.......

My cousin was a waist gunner on B-17's stationed with the 385th in Great Ashfield.I was initially drawn to this book because it was written by a member of the same bomb group and squadron (551st) as my cousin. I never had the chance to meet my cousin and listen to his stories, but I felt this book gave me a glimpse into the life of a B-17 crew member. There are many stories in this book and it's a quick and easy read. In the end I felt I was sitting around the bar with fellow crew members telling war stories. I've always admired the sacrifice and dedication made by these young men of the greatest generation and this book validates that point. Highly recommended! I also recommend ordering directly from Charles Hamlin's website and to receive a signed copy.

Update: Since reviewing this book, I had the opportunity to exchange emails with Charles Hamlin. Turns out he flew on the same aircraft, Shack Bunny as my cousin (different crew of course)!

Really enjoyed this book. Actual true stories from the crew members themselves. The stories are the ones that were memorable to them 50+ Yeats later so, very memorable experiences that they survived. A very challenging and dangerous job for them. Tha You each man for their service. Well compiled and edited.

After years of therapies and surgeries, she found peace with the world around her and shows the head-injured and their extended families and others how to cope with and eventually overcome their so-called "handicaps".

A must read for anyone in any accident!

This book is a must read for anyone who has a loved one who suffers from a brain injury. It is a story of an auto accident which caused sever injury to the author just 10 years ago. It is almost like reading a thriller because of the smooth way she tells the tale. You want to know what happens next so you just keep reading. Several lawyers, doctors, and Insurance Companies would prefer to suppress this book.
The hospital released the two in the totaled SUV in less than an hour. That is the beginning of the inept medical care which sadly continues for years. The symptoms of a brain injury are clearly delineated. The various medical tests given to the patient are also explained. There were tests that I was even unaware of even though I have had many years experience teaching Special Education students who suffered from similar injuries, either at birth or due to accidents. Kindle is a very good option but I would highly recommend you buy the paper book. This is because it is an excellent reference book you will find yourself going back to for the tips and information that will be very useful. This book is full of information and lists websites that will be very helpful.
But the big bonus of this book is the revealing of the very unhealthy games the Insurance companies, doctors, and lawyers play. It is simple GREED! These games are certainly not conducive to your healing process. But when you have fore-knowledge of their games you have a better chance of staying alive. The author knew she had trouble with her memory so she kept a log of everything that was said during a doctor or therapy visit. She also kept a record of any conversation with any agent of the Insurance company and the various lawyers she encountered. She even takes you through a deposition and exposed the tricks pulled. The good news is she had some EXCELLENT doctors and lawyers who truly care and helped her heal. Be alert not all are created equal in skill or caring.
This book would be useful for anyone who has to deal with an Insurance Company or Lawyer due to any kind of accident. She even lists the unethical practices of certain Insurance Companies. The lawyers have their slang for the various Insurance Companies because they deal with them often while you may have only one encounter. She also lists the Insurance Companies that are known for their high standards of ethics. The price of the book is worth that list alone. The author has performed a service to our society for this expose. She has done very good work!

Well written - useful for anyone connected with TBI

This is a well told tale of the struggles and life changing damage with a brain injury. A personal story that is filled with quotes and references. Valuable information for anyone who has experienced damage from concussion, or for the friends and family, as well as caregivers. I found her story to capture my attention, difficult to put down, most of the way through. Watching children racing down a hill today without helmets on, seeing a shimmy in a bike, just a little faster and there would be a crash, would the head injury be slight, fatal, or life changing, The author points out that crashing a bicycle is one of the leading causes of Traumatic Brain Injury in young people. Do you ride horses, roller skate, or ride bicycles without a helmet. Read this book and you may decide it might be best if you wore a helmet!

Zombies Thailand style

Well I have read my share of Zombie thrillers and I have to say that Dead Bangkok is unique. It is well written and just about as funny a book as I have read in a long time. This book is pure entertainment and well worth the price and the time to read it. I would would be happy to buy any other books by this writer. Sir thank you for the entertainment and excellent read.
I read this book again and found it as good the second time around. Fellow author, Mike Fook recommended the book to me and as usual he was right on. I hope that the author of Dead Bangkok writes another book. His work is very entertaining and unique.

Brings new life to deadbeat genre

Novels about Thailand by expat writers usually fall into the private-eye genre or I-got-fleeced-and-dumped-by-a-bargirl memoirs.

In Dead Bangkok, J.D. Villiness has come up with something much more original. Drawing blood from the zombie apocalypse genre, the author has concocted an intoxicating blend of gallows humour and gut-wrenching horror.

There is an intelligence at work here that defies many of the genre's comic-book conventions: "We were effectively in a war zone, and an overwhelming sense of freedom overtook me. There would be no more bills to pay. No more job to show up to. A man's worth would be measured by how well he could swing a machete and by whatever he could manage to loot."

The action reaches the boiling point when the narrator, his girlfriend Nok, and a drug dealer named Vato head for Pattaya, that seaside town whose economic engine is lubed by monetary sex. This is another of the novel's original suits. As the realization sinks in that a deadly plague has infected almost everyone, the only people left unscathed are those who are already stoned. When it's the survival of the wasted, Pattaya makes for a perverse promised land.

Nok, by turns surly and maternal, obsessed with food and gold, comes off as a genuinely Thai rural character with a "skill set most survivalists would envy. She could start a fire with sticks, spot fruit in the trees from far away, and if I wanted a coconut, she would just kick off her flip-flops and climb a tree like a monkey. She was the girl you would want to be stranded on an island with."

The novel does not skimp on visceral horror but often imbues it with a cinematic quality: "It was like watching a Burmese python unhinge its own jaw so it could swallow larger prey."

Much of the snappy and witty dialogue had me chuckling. After the narrator comes up with some wild-eyed survivalist plans, like turning a tuk-tuk into a Persian death chariot, Vato said to him: "You know that guy at the party who does way too much coke and starts coming up with all kinds of great ideas of s*** to do but just sits there and does more coke?"

"Yeah."

"You're becoming that guy."

When the novel does flirt with the bargirl genre, it's only to lampoon it: "If getting dressed up in lingerie and choked to death by ladyboys was your thing, you were in good company."

The author's knowledge of the Thai supernatural is formidable. Whether it's baby dolls hanging from bumpers as talismans, or detailing how souls are sent to Yama, the lord of the dead, or running down a pantheon of phantoms dwelling in water and rice fields, this is a primer for Thai Occult 101. Most original of all is the "baby ghost" who serves as both the narrator's helper and tormentor, often ridiculing him by dredging up obscene insults from the narrator's own mind.

Other than confusing Koh Phi Phi for Koh Phangan as the sight of the Full Moon Party, I could not catch him out on any other local details. With e-books the advantage is that the author can continually do updates.

End-of-the-world sagas, with their carnage and virulence, work best when they reaffirm our humanity and dignity, for that's all anyone has left, save for a machete and a bag of smack if you're in this alternate universe. Far be it from Villiness to offer any corny musings on the brotherhood of man. This narrator has his own riff on a swan song. "It was part of some deeply embedded desire not to be found dead with crap in my pants. Back home, the same desire had led me into an agreement with a buddy that if one of us died, the other would go to the deceased's apartment and throw away all of the dead guy's porn collection before his mom could find it."

If this is the end of the world, maybe it's better to die laughing - an apt sentiment in the Land of Smiles.

Most of the plot strands are woven together into a tight noose. The supernatural elements are actually grounded in neurology and the affliction is part of a wider conspiracy (maybe not too surprising for fans of The X Files, but when they did ever feature the Thai "filth ghost"?)

Towards the end, Dead Bangkok revels in a little too much gross-out horror and fecal matter for my stomach lining's sake, while the relationship between Nok and the narrator seems undernourished. But with the plot racing along in fourth gear these blemishes could well remain blurs for most readers.

All in all, this is a harrowing and humorous, rocket-paced yarn, embroidered with enough Thai-specific details to keep it real. For the most part, the psychological and spiritual underpinnings - surfing a few brain waves of Philip K Dick - make the fantastical seem all too credible.

Ultra-fun Zombie Adventure

Dead Bangkok is Hunter S. Thompson meets Zombieland spliced together with Thai superstition. The blend creates a loony adventure that I couldn't stop reading until the end. The comical outbursts of the main character Joel and his coping of the entire situation he is placed in really took the book to another level for me. It was a super fun read and something I would compare to a video game minus the interactivity. The book also teaches the reader some Thai, as there are often lines of code-switching between English and Thai, as well as a ton about Thai culture and superstition, which I found extremely interesting.

While there were the occasional typos, it did not interrupt the flow of the story and overall the story was very well written giving the reader very descriptive (and often graphic!)imagery of what is going on throughout this insane adventure.

If you are into zombie or ghost stories and are looking for a super fun book to take you on the adventure of a life-time, definitely pick up Dead Bangkok!
