Must read for any LEOW

This is an amazing book. Being a cops wife is not easy but it's a wonderful wonderful thing. Melissa is able to show every aspect of this life with our LEOs. The good the bad and the downright terrifying. She keeps it real. Buy this book if you are a 20 year LEOW a brand new LEOW or if you know a LEOW.

I think the intentions of this book were good- but I think more than anything it is a book that I wish the general public would read. I am an LEO wife- and I think as one we all have fears and concerns for our husbands as it is.. Rather than give comfort this book just intensifies those fears. I could barely read it while my husband was at work (which is a lot of the time that I am home!) because it made me so sad and worried. I agree with those who said it has a "you're lucky your LEO is still alive" feel to it. I was hoping for comforting and inspirational stories and this is NOT what this book is about at all. I am obviously a huge supporter of our officers and the way this is written is definitely in support of our officers- I would love to have it broadcast to everyone.. Particularly those that constantly put them down. But I did not find what I personally was looking for from it. My heart breaks for the families in the stories but it was not what I was expecting and in no way gives comfort or support to the average police wife. Be prepared to cry a lot- not out of hope and inspiration.. But of pure sadness.

Great Book!

I usually don't give books five stars. However, This book really hit home and I couldn't put it down. I recieved it and by that night I had already finished it! The Book brought up so many emotions. Melissa Littles did a fantastic job with this book. Can't wait for the next one!

What has made this play so popular over the years is the improvisational element. The audience gets to name the Dwarves prior to the performance and the actors must then play their parts according to that name. It's a different show every night!


This is a really simple play to stage, and has been produced by many school groups and community Theatres.

About the Author
Colonel L. Henry Dowell is an author and internationally produced playwright from Central Kentucky. He holds the distinction of being the best selling author of parodies and satires on Amazon. He received his BA in Theatre from Morehead State University and attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. In 2013, the Governor of Kentucky commissioned him a Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth.

He is the co-founder of The Gusto Theatre Company, where he has directed original productions and adaptations of the classics for over 20 years.

An easy win for youth theatre! Do this play!

Our non profit youth theatre just performed this fun show in our studio this past weekend to sold out crowds. As a director I really enjoyed giving our kids a chance to play these roles. More specifically, as an improvisational actor and director I was thrilled to see the options for the Dwarves to play out their assigned names by the audience. Simple to stage (we just used a forest backdrop) and to costume, this show was an easy win. The kids loved it and the parents and families did too!

Kept me laughing from the beginning to the end!

I truly enjoyed reading this play. It is entertaining from the beginning to the end. I loved the creatively funny retelling of this all-time classic tale. Dowell masterfully intertwines film, music and fairy tale into a play that is ingenious, fresh, and over the top. The characters come to life through the dialog. Each one possesses a uniquely vivid personality all their own. I can only imagine how great it would be to see a live performance. Highly recommended to people of all ages.

Let the light shine on fantastic reading

Now, let's disclose about myself, shall we? I pick this book up through this website that would announce which really good books are up for available, thus beefing up my Kindle with even more ludicrous amount of the ebooks. I'm voracious reader whose primarily stick with fantasy and science fiction genres. I'm big fan of the films, especially Asian cinema. I'm currently passionate fan of anime and manga.

Now, we have that out of the way so let's talk about how I feel about this book.

As a former student of film school, I can really relate to the main character strongly, especially how he deals with his professors and classmates. There were numerous situation in the book that really mirrored my real life experiences so it makes very entertaining and fascinating reading. It's interesting to see how the main character operate in that realm but also he has to deal with his parents, whose are trying to be patient with him.

When the main character travel to Italy, the book got even more better because of how he interacts with the Italians. Honestly, there were several moments where I couldn't stop laughing out loud because of misunderstanding and trippy experiences that the main character went through. I really enjoy Naples section, which really enhanced this book big time. I really like how he's having film discussion with very dangerous person, which is really bizarre but I find it so enjoyable.

I think that this book has to be among the few that are very memorable books I've ever read ever since I bought my Kindle, which really says something. Give or take, I have read insane amount and this book has made its huge impression on me.

Of course, there's typos throughout the book but that doesn't hinder my enjoyment. I just hope that the author will take his time to correct those typos for future revision. Still, this should not stop anyone from getting this book.

I really strongly recommend this book. It should not be missed at all.

Highly imaginative, funny, intelligent!

I loved this witty, intelligent, warm-hearted and complex book and I'm really looking forward to the next one. Reading a book is an intimate sharing of mind, emotion and heart with the mind and heart of the author. When starting a book, I always ask myself if I want to 'wash' my consciousness in that particular thought/feeling world. Not only is Empire of Light a fascinating read, it's a world of imagination that left me feeling intrigued, cheerful and very glad I happened upon it. Gregory Earls has not only a unique view of humanity but a kind one as well. Bravo!

Brilliant--the light shines through

Empire of Light

As a theater/film/art buff myself, I feel that Mr. Earls opened up a new world for me, giving me insight into the world of light and shadows in a way that I could absorb. The lead character and narrator, Jason Tiss's, self deprecating humor and clumsy manner make him human and lovable. The Brownie camera adds a touch of magic to the scenery and brings the stories in the Caravaggio paintings to life in vivid detail. Meeting Sts. Matthew and Peter and the drowned virgin provides a vital spark to the story and teaches Jason, and us, some life lessons along the way.

I recommend the book to anyone who loves to learn as well as read a good story.

And I just fell into a pond of scummy water.” She grabbed the edge of her skirt. “Just look at me! I’m covered in mud!” “What happened to your blazer?” “It… it must’ve come off inside that tornado.” “Portal.” “Whatever.” She clutched the blue stones around her throat. “I keep seeing these funny bugs flying around… and…and there’s a jaguar back there. And something else… like out of a nightmare. A scarlet animal… sort of. Horrible looking. Its fingertip lit up and twirled at me.” A monster-in-the-closet type of fear glimmered in her eyes. Could only be Urzik. In which case, he was the one who’d zapped my friend Tam. “W-hat did you do?” “Pushed him into the pond. He screamed, and so I ran.” She slapped the mud on her blouse. “I thought I was gonna be lost in this awful place forever. When do we leave?” I suppose I couldn’t expect her to say, “Gee, Lyris. Sorry I thought you were talking crazy.” But it would’ve been nice. I scratched the itchy mark on my arm. “I tried to tell you that I was go—” “Where’s a place to clean up. Where’s the restroom?” We’d need to ease into this. “Darla, hate to break it to you, but we’re in a different world. Things are more… natural here. The nearest restroom is that bush over there.” She stiffened. ‘What are you saying?” “Um… that you need to think Wilderness Training.” “Really? Then where did you get those cute, patchy cut-offs? I want to change my clothes right now! And why does it smell like something just died here?” Probably me: no shower, and too much time with those irritating dwarves. Would Darla think to ask where I’d been for the past few hours? “Look, why don’t we go back to this… place I heard about?” Darla didn’t need to know that Gwynyin’s place was inside a tree. “We should—” “We should get home!” She aimed her finger at me, and her voice ramped up an octave. “What’ll our moms think when they learn we fell down a HOLE! DID YOU CONSIDER THAT?” “It wasn’t a hole. I told you. It’s called a portal. Why did you want to stop me from coming here, anyway?” “Are you brain dead? I was trying to save you from falling. It looked like a hole. How was I to know where it went?” “So now we’ve got a problem, because I’m not sure you can get back.”

Elf Girl

In the book, the main character, Lyris, is only 1/2 human... I would say this is a feeling many of us have had (not fitting in), so there's an easy emotional connection with Lyris. When faced with living without all of our normal "conveniences" such as cell phones, it forces Lyris to look inward in order to figure out how to live the life she wants. The only problem is, she sometimes can be her own worst enemy... sound familiar? It's a great book for those that like other worldly stories!

Not so different after all...

Why do we love books like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and now Eleanor Roger's Elf Girl? Though they take us to an unfamiliar world full of strange creatures and mystical experiences, I believe they simultaneously take us on an adventure into ourselves. It is the specificity of the differences that makes us see the sameness in ourselves.

Great poets don't describe general feelings and perspectives, they elegantly evoke particular sensations. In the larger scheme of things we are but specks of matter and energy in a big world and bigger universe. We are all that way and the differences in even our DNA are minute. However, even if we stand right next to each other and describe what we see, the slight shift if position will make us see things slightly differently. It is those subtle differences that make us see ourselves more clearly.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery said "Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction."

Elf Girl takes us into a world we've never known and unless you are a teenage girl (which I am not) into a life experience we will never have and yet, it both brings that world alive and let's us see ourselves in the process.

I look forward to reading more of Eleanor Rogers' work.

Good read for middle schoolers!

As a retired middle school teacher, and as a parent, I recommend this book.
Rogers' debut as a novelist delivers straight from the heart life lessons for middle schoolers in a truly captivating story.
Through the book's primary character, Lyris, a young teenage girl, the reader learns that looking different can be one of life's important challenges to work through, and it's not looks that make a person weak or define who you are. Lyris is different than others in many ways, and as this adventure story unfolds, she, her friend Darla, and a boy named Derrick, learn that recognizing, facing, and over-coming obstacles helps you recognize who you really are, and what's important to you. There is so much about the characters that the reader can related to, and learn from, as they are transported from Earthworld to other-world Dandelorn and the adventure begins to captivates you. Elf Girl is a compelling story, and journey worth taking!

Love it!

The only thing better than this excellent collection would have been the actual out of print issues. But until then we will have to content ourselves with this fascinating collection of poems, essays, and artwork. This strives to combine the extremely diverse views of Faery practitioners into a single volume. Does a great job of representing a variety of, often contradictory, views.

Mediocrity at it's worst

The majority of material here was appropriated by the editor from writers who contributed to the magazine in it's early days. And yet, they receive no financial benefit from their publication here... but Faerywolf sure does. This is consistent with the modus operandi of his version of warlockcraft: profit profit profit...
If you're interested in the tradition, stick with Victor Anderson's original book of poetry: Thorns of the Blood Rose.

Storm has been writing and teaching for years now and I owe him a lot for how he has helped me understand things magically as well as just how the head and heart work in this world. He has gathered some very fine writing and you will be in awe with what you can glean form this work.

About the Author
Born in Burlingame, California, David Saccheri spent the majority of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he worked as an illustrator and conceptual artist in the computer gaming and film industries. He has illustrated books and websites, and has taught digital and fine art both privately and at the college level. After moving to Arizona, David turned his creative energy towards writing and began to put into words the story that had been evolving for more than a decade: that of Heather, the Maidens, and Evermore.

Every scene is a painting

What's the visual equivalent of 'lyrical'? The author is an
accomplished painter and his paintings have this (whatever it's
called). In this book he brings this quality to the written word,
challenging the reader to relate to his book for the imagery. Every
scene is a painting.

I gave up trying to classify this book. There is fantasy, certainly;
but also suspense, murder, character and action. Sometimes I felt I
was reading an epic poem, albeit unmetered. Mostly, though, it's the
imagery that carries you forward. That said, nothing else lets you
down: pacing, plot, characters, dialog and setting all carry their own
weight. The relationships between the characters, and between
characters and setting, are delightful to watch unfold. In particular,
the characters both major and supporting are well-developed and
compelling; several could support novels telling their own stories.

Production quality is high (I read the hardcover): quality paper and
print and an excellent dust jacket.

A word of warning: though the main characters are children, and
fantasy looms large, the books explores some situations that can be a
bit ... brutal for some readers. These don't seem central to the
story, though, and don't make up a large part of the book; so even if
this troubles you don't let this stop you from appreciating the rest
of this work.

The book is clearly intended as the first in a series. It promises to be epic.

Left me a bit dissatisfied... *SPOILERS*

I read this book over the course of a few days. Longer than I normally take but I stopped in the middle to read a couple other books before finishing this one. The book is well written and I'm sure if I can get over the bad taste this left in my mouth, the other books will most likely be really fantastic. Perhaps I'm being picky but the ending of this left me so dissatisfied that I'm not sure if I'll be able to even read the others.

There's a horrible murder that takes place towards the beginning of this book. The main character is almost killed at the same time. I kept reading hoping that I'd get some insight into who did it and and why. Also what are these dreams that the main character keeps having, who is her grandmother really, who are the maidens, what's this whole destiny thing about? You'll get no answers. It just ends. No explanations, no insight, complete cliffhanger. When you leave off the police seem no closer to figuring out what happened to the little boy who was killed. It ends with the grandmother deciding she's going to tell her granddaughter everything and with the granddaughter and her best friend wandering off into some other world for a parade. That's it. The end. All that building up and no satisfactory ending to the book.

I wanted to like this. I really did. I just hate cliffhangers. The house was fantastic. It was such an interesting and fun idea but being left with no resolution at all really grated on me.

I absolutely love this book

I absolutely love this book!!! The characters are both realistic and memorable. Karmen made it hard for me to trust another woman again with her trifling behind, and Jon Jon was a str8 sucka for love! I'm eagerly looking forward to more books from this author!

What lengths are you willing to go to achieve your dreams? What lengths will you go for your goals? Are you willing to sell your soul to the devil? Are you willing to sign in blood on the dotted line?

Enter into the world of Jon Jon and Karmen. Jon Jon started out as the good kid, who just likes to produce music. His family has supported him in all his endeavors and he is actually good at producing and making music. Of course he falls prey to fame and the fast life and this is where Karmen enters into the picture. Karmen is all about self and what you can do for her. She is truly as the title describes, A Devil in a Red Dress. Karmen is the devil personified and the lengths she goes to keep herself satisfied are utterly ridiculous. Jon Jon cuts off his family for Karmen and on top of all the other foolishness Karmen puts him through while dating and he marries her. Life is pure hell for him from that point on and does not get better. Jon Jon starts to wake up from all the hell and realizes it is too late. He makes changes and tries to correct his many mistakes.

I give this book three stars due to some details were left out such as when he was dating the sister and then started dating Karmen. How did the sister feel about this? Did she just fade into the background? Sometimes I felt like the story was all over the place. In other instances, I was thinking nobody could be as stupid as Jon Jon! The writing was on the wall from the beginning and he acted like the wall was blank

What can I say about this book other than it is excellent and a must read! I Bought the book one day, received it the next, and completed the reading within four hours. I could not put it down! From chapter to chapter you are yearning and eager to read more. The author gives you an inside of what the music industry life is like, but begans with a tale of a family that is build on love and encouragement and how easy it can be broken with money, power, and let me not forget heathenism! Overall, the book could have been longer, but knowing that this is a trilogy, the reader will be waiting in anticipation for more and longing to discover what will be Carmen's next move!
