Five Stars (out of Five). In Western culture, the rift between science and scripture has often been contentious. During the Renaissance, when the discoveries of Copernicus and Galileo directly challenged the science of the Bible, the dichotomy became seemingly irreparable. One solution recognized the independence between scientific theories and scriptural truth. In The Science of the Quran, Ahmad Hassan approaches the religion-versus-science predicament in a completely opposite manner. He states that not only are science and religion compatible, but that a careful examination of the Quran demonstrates that God's revealed word to Mohammed proves the existence of a supreme being since the verses in the Quran validate modern scientific discoveries. After a brief autobiographical introduction, Hassan devotes the first part of the text to a thorough and thoughtful examination of the Quran and explains the ways in which the ideas in his book differ from the teachings of Islam. He continues with a biographical chapter on Mohammed and how God revealed the Quran to him. In the second section of the book, Hassan summarizes the history of scientific thought from Archimedes to Einstein. In the third section, Hassan briefly explains more than three dozen scientific theories from the fields of astronomy, physics, biology, geology, and technology. After each explanation he notes the appropriate verse of the Quran which supports that particular theory. In the field of Quranic hermeneutics, it is generally agreed that the verses of the Quran may have many meanings beyond their literal expression; the validity of these meanings have long been debated by scholars. Hassan admits that he is well aware of these discussions. He notes that some readers may not accept that the Quran provides modern-day natural world insights and reject the conclusions arrived at in this book. Hassan's concern is valid. The translation of the Quran he uses is his own, and his conclusions are based on how a particular word is rendered. For example, the Arabic word sema'a is usually translated as sky, but Hassan expands the concept by noting that the word can mean Earth's upper atmosphere, distant stars, faraway planets and the like. Additionally, Hassan uses verb forms for nouns to bolster his interpretations. Within such broad etymologies, Hassan translates verse 51:47 as, And the sky we [the god] built with [or through] hands, and we are surely expanding [or enlarging]. Hassan concludes that the verse explains the expanding universe that is also a part of the big bang theory. The arguments for the other scientific facts continue in much the same manner, and some, Hassan admits, will raise a few eyebrows. He states that verse 2:74, about rivers gushing, refers to the Grand Canyon, and that verses 87:1-5, about a black scum, indicate the formation of crude oil. Readers of the Quran who delight in discovering esoteric meanings in its verses will enjoy Hassan's interpretations. General readers with little knowledge of the Quran and the prophet Mohammed will find the first sections of the book instructive and enlightening. Books on religion sometimes miss the mark. The Science of the Quran looks at how the Quran predicted scientific discoveries, focusing in on the issues that translators have had with the language involved. It picks through the language, sometimes breaking it down and showing how the need for followers to interpret the Quran has affected the translation. It also looks at the Islamic tradition in a number of different areas, showing that it is more than the followers in today's news. Although there are a number of examples that were a little stretched, this book, overall, makes for some interesting reading. If nothing else, it gives a fresh look at translations of the Quran, demonstrating that the interpretation of the Quran depends on its translation. The linguistic breakdown of the verses presented makes for some interesting reading, as does the clarification of the so-called grey verses, which no doubt make for some interesting discussions. The importance of looking at the translation is important in a book like this, and Hassan deserves kudos for his work in that area. As for the science content itself, there are some minor issues. Some of the scientific terms are a little off, but that was bound to happen, given the amount of material covered. Also, there are some areas where the science was stretched a little, especially when it came to sections where the predictions would have been pretty obvious, such as the increase in boats to gigantic size. However, the look at how the Quran predicted much of our science is fascinating, especially given the strong Islamic scientific tradition; that the Quran did predict as much science as it did is remarkable. The Science of the Quran is a well-written book by a scientist and an intellectual who defies the common interpretations of the Quran. Ahmad Hassan claims that the Quran foretold the science, only if the followers had paid attention to the deeper meaning, rather than the superficial and old interpretations. Hassan starts each segment by a brief introduction to a scientific phenomenon and then cites numerous passages from the Quran to augment his claim that the Quran foretold science-based facts, many of them became known only in the last 100 years or so. He argues that the book must be from a super natural, All-powerful God due to the fact that the Quran was revealed some fourteen hundred years ago. His most enticing argument is around the theory of evolution. He challenges the traditionalists and argues that the theory of evolution is based on scientific facts and is actually supported by the Quran. As usual, he cites various verses and offers his own interpretation to support his belief. He defies the Quranic (as well as Biblical) interpretations that Adam was the first man created! All in all, a must read for anyone who wonders if the Quran and Islamic beliefs (and perhaps the same applies to the Bible) and science are mutually exclusive. The answers will surprise many. Initially I found the idea of reading a book about the connection between science and the Quran to be intimidating, especially since it is written by an Iraqi-American electrical engineer. Having very little knowledge of the Quran and a little more of science, I was intrigued, however, still concerned that it would be written beyond my level of comprehension. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I was totally incorrect. Ahmad Hassan has written The Science of the Quran, in a manner that can be appreciated and understood by both beginners and experts. He begins the book by providing a basic understanding of what the Quran is about, and how it evolved historically. He also gives an in-depth discussion about the prophets of the time, especially the Last Prophet Muhammad. He allows for some comparisons between the Christian Bible and prophets; however, he does not try to change one s beliefs, he just uses the information to strengthen the discussion. It really helped me relate my historical Christian knowledge to what was happening at the time. I felt that his discussion was respectfully neutral. After explaining the Quran and the history behind it, Hassan then begins a basic discussion about scientific principles and how they are mentioned in the Quran. He discusses a wide variety of over thirty scientific topics and relates them to verses in the Quran. Believing the Quran to be created directly from revelations directly from God to Muhammad, over 1,400 years ago, Hassan believes that this proves that a Supreme Being exists. Personally, I found The Science of the Quran to be a fascinating, well-written book. It gave me a greater appreciation and understanding of my friends who follow the teachings of the Quran. I also truly enjoyed seeing the connection between the verses presented in the Quran and the beliefs of modern science. I felt that some of the comparisons seemed to be more valid than others.I feel that The Science of the Quran by Ahmad Hassan is an excellent resource for people of various backgrounds who have an interest in understanding the Quran. The connection between the verses that were written well before we truly understood science and modern science as we know it today presents a wealth of support for a belief in a Supreme Being. Considering the political climate that we are facing today, I think it is extremely important for individuals to gain an understanding of a religion that they might know nothing about. About the Author
Ahmad Hassan was born in Baghdad, Iraq. He moved to the United States at an early age and has lived in America for most of his life. Since his teens, Hassan has had an increasing interest in the Quran and has spent the last seven years researching its deeper meaning. This book is partially the result of that effort, in conjunction with his keen interest in science. Hassan has been a practicing electrical engineer since 1989 and also holds a master's degree in business administration. He is a U.S. citizen and lives and works in the United States.

Author writes with considerable passion and clarity but is a bit unconvincing by the end

In any examination of religion and science, there are essentially 4 approaches you can take in evaluating apparent conflicts between the science we know today and source material from a religious text (whether it is the Torah, the New Testament, or the Quran):
Claim the science is right and the source is wrong (the modern scientific approach)
Claim the source is right and science is wrong (like those who claim the world is just 6000 years old)
Claim the source can be reinterpreted to not conflict with science (like those who interpret creation as spiritual and not physical)
Claim the source actually predicted the correct scientific result
It is this last category into which Ahmad Hassan has placed the Science of the Quran.
His book is divided into 3 parts. The strongest part was Part I where Hassan explains the Quran and Islam to a reader who doesn't understand these topics. Hassan writes clearly and his explanations helped me understand much about a religion that I didn't know much about before. He is obviously passionate on the subject, but is also able to explain foreign ideas to the reader in an understandable manner. Part II discusses the general nature of the scientific enterprise.
Part III is where the book lost me as he proceeds through countless scientific ideas, and for each one, quotes the Quran verse that not only agrees with the science, but in many cases, predicted the science long before the scientific world caught up. The problem is that many of Hassan's arguments seem far fetched, and since I can't read the Quran in the original Arabic, I wonder how creative he is in translation to make the Quranic text match the scientific reality. I have also read enough Judaism and Science and Christianity and Science to recognize some familiar arguments that you could hear from Avigdor Miller or Gerald Schroeder. The explanation that the universe can be said to move around the Earth due to relativity is just one example of many.
Overall I give the book 4 stars - just because the author didn't prove his thesis to me doesn't mean the book is bad, but approach it with the understanding that you likely won't be entirely convinced.

Religion foretelling science

According to the author, the purpose of this book is that "the successful demonstration of the science of the Quran would lead to potential proof of the existence of a supreme being (God)".
But Muslims believe that the Quran is the verbatim word of God as dictated to Muhammad through the angel Jibreal (Gabriel); so, ipso facto, the very presence of the Quran proves the existence of God. Therefore, why is there need for more proof? Or is the true purpose of the book to convince non-Muslims of the legitimacy the Quran (as the word of God) as revealed to Qasim bin Abdallah bin Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim, known as Muhammad (the Praiseworthy) anointing him "His" messenger and the ultimate Prophet (Khatem Al Anbeya').
The book is divided into three parts, following an introduction of the author's life and his initiation to Islam and the Quran. In the first part, chapters one & two, Hassan expounds about the virtuous life of Muhammad, the genesis and "miracle"of the Quran, as understood and believed by Muslims. The plausibility of the entire book depends on the reader accepting this version as true facts. Unfortunately, contemporary historical documents, recent archeological discoveries, numismatic findings and academic research by independent scholars are challenging these concepts.
To give this book a fair reading, skeptics and non-believers should jettison any preconceptions or prejudice and temporarily suspend disbelief; just go with the flow and see where it leads.
The second segment, chapters three and four, introduce a rudimentary overview of the history of science and its luminaries, from Plato to modern times. Scientific theories are mentioned to emphasize that what may have been "fact" in the past sometimes proves false, and that what seems incomprehensible today may become universally understood, even axiomatic, in the future. Hassan believes that "Science is nothing less than fundamental truth and will ultimately shape almost everything around us." He then introduces the work of science historian, George Sarton, to highlight "the axial role of the Quran in the fields of science." and uses it as a segway to the next chapter about the key similarities between science and the Quran. Verses from twenty-one "surahs", such as Al Naml (The Ants), Al Nahl (The Bees) and Yunus (Jonah) are given as a few introductory examples to demonstrate the scientific contents of the Quran.
Part three is the bulk of the book that lays out the science in the Quran. This is where the writer is at his best, when he explains basic and complex scientific theories and facts; but loses his credibility when he tries to fit these to the pronouncements of the Quran.
He frequently overreaches in his interpretation of a verse or word, giving it significance and meaning that is far fetched. One of many such examples is the word "sama'a" that means sky (and sometimes Heaven) in Arabic. Hassan interprets it as `sky' in one verse (Al Dhariyat, 51:47) and `airplane' in another (Al Hajj, 22:65) that he refers to as the "airplane verse".
In another instance (Al Mulk 67:19), Hassan massages the word "tayr" to also mean 'airplane' and deliberately (or by ignorance) translates "ṣāffātin wa-yaqbiḍna mā yumsikuhunna" (aligned and holding on to what sustains them) to `forming a line and they jerk'. In another case he translates the word "Wah", conventionally meaning `And', to`By' as in an oath; it is occasionally used in this form only colloquially, There are too many more such examples to enumerate here.
Hassan tries to cover his bases by stating that, "In some instances, my translation of a word may not match Al-Mawrid" (his chosen Arabic dictionary) because I use the context of the verse while translating" and adds that other translators were often wrong because they did not understand the true intended meaning of the verses.
The author's word and text manipulations and repeated attempts at proving the prescient scientific nature of the Quran are tantamount to trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The enterprise failed.
As expected of any religious book, the writing is preachy and proselytizing but without attempting to demean other faiths. It is inclusive and conciliatory. Hassan subtly tries to convince the reader that the Quran is the ideal path to God, but is not the only way at the exclusion of all others.
The author seems sincere in his faith, convinced by his beliefs and enthralled with his subject; he writes from the heart.
I enjoyed reading "The Science of the Quran" and was intrigued by the novelty of its central theory. Although I disagree with most of the non-scientific contents of the book and its conclusions, I gave it 4 stars because of the quality of organization, clarity of the scientific explanations, steady purpose, simple but not simplistic style of writing and sincerity of the author. He avoided the subterfuge of misdirection and obfuscation that are resorted to by some authors of similar works, which extol the wonders of their holy books.
The text is supported by a bibliography of 79 English scientific articles and 7 Arabic Islamic treatises.
